Honestly, I think Garp chasing down Luffy the minute he finds out he started being a pirate was a really fun choice. Its totally in character for Garp to go after Luffy in the East Blue and kick his ass for a bit and then just let him be a pirate anyways.

I think the idea was good but the execution was meh. Garp turned into a worried grandpa just to become supportive at the last 5 minutes without the prior idea that he's a crazy guy just like Luffy. I think having him there also gives more importance to Luffy. We are not following a random kid that just happens to be strong, but we are following the grandson of a famous marine trying to follow his dreams. It puts tension to his character but also a reason for him to be strong physically and morally.

Laboon doesn't become important until Brook and even then it's not that important. However, Little Garden has the first contact with Crocodile, Nami gets sick which gives a reason to head to Drum, they meet the giants which will be important in Enies Lobby, and of course some Baroque Works agents to battle. The marine B plot was really engaging to me and I absolutely loved the implementation of Garp. It’s honestly shocking to me that people didn’t like it, but I can at least understand that kind of reaction to it being a disembarking from the main plot.
@saint037
@saint037 Жыл бұрын
that's what a B plot is for though, to kinda of disembark you from the main plot with otee stories and this is a series with hour long episodes so they have to have some sort of B plot that wasn't necessary in the anime because it's basically just 20 minutes, we can take 20 minutes
@MortimerFolchert
@MortimerFolchert Жыл бұрын
I mean, the "B Plot" with Garp and Koby-Meppo was in the Manga... they meet shortly after Luffy left, so this is pretty accurate. Also brought into consideration, is that Koby needs to be "Battle-ready" during Marineford, which happens only a few months later. So he needs to start his training ASAP. ^^

I enjoyed it, B plot makes the world feels more complex & expansive, by showing that there are other things going on. They should make Smoker and or developments in Alabasta with Koza as the B plot for S2 I think, maybe cut out Garp for now.

I agree. Garp storyline even though just a B plot did a lot in world building. Most of the lore drops actually come from the Garp storyline and not from the main story. It gives the viewer the impression that this world is huge and everything the Straw Hats are doing is connected with one another.

Honestly, Sweet Tooth works as both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that it shows it can be done and work, and a curse in that they'll say its copying if they go that route. I liked seeing more of Garp’s and Koby’s relationship and him mentoring Koby and Helmepoo. It gave us more exposure to the marines and the characters that we barely get in the manga. It also makes complete sense that Garp would do everything in his power to stop his grandson from becoming a pirate so he wouldn’t end up on the wrong path or worse being killed in the Grandline or executed by the World Government like Roger was. It helped develop Koby further and develop his friendship and similar parallelism Garp and Roger had that he has with Luffy. Same way it helped develop Koby and Helmepoo friendship. It was awesome seeing Garp talk with Mihawk and Zeff because we rarely see Garp or any of those characters interact with more then a few characters. Seeing more of Bogard was cool too, meaning Oda hasn’t forgotten about him either. Even for any screentime they shared with characters like Sanji and Ussop those are main characters that will have thousand of moments in future seasons for us to have more of them when we will only see Garp, Helmepoo, and Koby every once in awhile future. At the end of the day the anime and manga will always be there for you to enjoy. The live action will be different and there’s no need to get bugged by changes when Oda and the crew are working in a different medium and have to do what they think is best for this version of the story. Alabasta will be a huge milestone for this show. If they make it past that and do it justice, this project will have been a massive success. I don't think we should worry about anything beyond that for now. I think the best way to do it would be to have Alabasta be it's own season and let season 2 deal with all the setup like introducing Smoker, Baroque Works, Vivi and Chopper. That would still leave Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden and Drum Kingdom for Season 2 with an expanded Smoker subplot.

They cant properly do alabasta without a entire season dedicated to just alabasta itself. Too much happens there with Baroque works, Crocodile and vivi and the Rebel army. to do logue town to drum properly it would take a full season. 1 Episode for loguetown, 1 for reverse mountain, 1 for whiskey peak, 2 for little garden, and 3 for Drum. Because they have to do the 1 episode with luffy carrying Nami up the mountain with sanji. Then the flashback for Chopper. And then Beating Wapol. And they cant cut whiskey peak because that has to be there to establish Crocodile hunting them after Zoro takes out the 100 bounty hunters, and Vivi asking them for help there. To cut anything at this point would only hurt it's narrative going forward. With Alabasta there is too much content even if you cut some. They have to do Smoker and Tashigi, they have to Do Ace, Which that would be 1 episode by itself. Then Rain base would be a second episode. The Fight with Luffy and Crocodile its own episode. a 4th to set up the final stretch and robin and pell helping luffy. Then the rest the final battles in Alubarna. Alabasta would be a bastardized version if it didnt have a full season to itself.

I think Lougetown, Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak and possibly Little Garden can be covered in the first four episodes since those arcs are kinda short but Drum Island is gonna need two episodes each and Alabasta’s probably gonna need four episodes to cover everything! This may be unpopular due to how many people are itching for Alabasta, but I honestly think that Alabasta is going to be a season three topic. Loguetown, Reverse Island, Whiskey Peak, Drum island, Little Garden, all of those arks are just as long or longer than the ones these 8 episodes covered. As long as Oda is there to help make decisions, I cant imagine Alabasta is going to make it in the next batch. Just to make room, youd need to cut half of those, and to be honest I can see a pretty successful season two just spent covering those 5 arks, with the hype for what comes next driving the show forward to a third season. Perosnally, I definitely wouldnt mind the last episode being them finding shore at Alabasta, with an end credits teaser of Ace just like they did with Smoker.

But none of those arcs are particularly eventful for a season storyline and can easily be condensed. The purpose of the live action is to create a bite-sized version of the original story, they can pretty easily fit each of those arcs into a single hour episode with Alabaster being the remaining episodes. Whiskey Peak is one that could even be skipped altogether in my opinion or just be like half an episode long.
@jacksonroy8720
@jacksonroy8720 Жыл бұрын
@@MidnightEkaki they can be more than eventful with a proper b plot. Smoker chasing them across the ocean would create some pretty good tension, and aside from that, how they handle vivi and baroque works can supplement the rest. If they format it as more of an unraveling mystery from island to island, then it ends in a climax where they discover who Mr 0 is along with vivi, then it'd set up season 3 perfectly. Yeah they'd have to change a little bit, but nothing major, and they've already kind of done that in season 1.

if they stretch it like this then we will need 20+ seasons to cover the whole thing. And with 2-3 years per season that's 40-60 years... So basically that dooms the whole idea. The only chance for them to keep it alive is to get to the timeskip in 3-4 seasons. And if show will not be dead by that point, use a timeskip to kickstart an interest for a second half. You have to accept that there is absolutely no way for the live show to capture more then just very essential parts of the story abd it has nothing to do with any arcs being good or bad. Honestly, I can totally see them majorly rewriting further big arcs into 1-2 episodes and skipping every small and non-essential arcs.

@@maksymmazurok6120 They will never cover the whole thing. One piece itself isn't even done yet, and live action takes so much longer than animation to produce. I see it a lot where people talk about what Thriller bark may look like, or how cool whole cake might be. The show will never reach that, no matter how good it might be. Enjoy it for what it is, the audience for it is not the exact same as the anime or mange viewers. A lot of people who are watching it have zero experience in the series, and thus don't have the knowledge to want to rush to what's next. I feel like a child actor wouldn‘t be a good option considering the large time span between seasons; they‘d age (and grow) tremendously inbetween thus making continuity very difficult! Also because of child actor protective rights he‘d have less screen time and i think that wouldn‘t do Chopper justice. I loved what they did with Merry though, great costume! Given the pace of the live action, I could see how they could conceivably work Alabasta into a single season. Loguetown and the approach to Reverse Mountain in one episode. Laboon/Crocus and Whiskey Peak in the second. Little Garden could be condensed into a single episode since it’s not all that long. Two episodes for Drum Island. Leaving the final three episodes to cover Alabasta, which would be plenty of time to cover all the major points. Of course I’d love to see it extended just as much as anyone else, realistically it’s not impossible to pull off.

To properly pace the scenes, I'd put loguetown, reverse mountain, and laboon all in the same episode. Whiskey peak is just a single fight scene, so you could either use it as a way to keep people hyped for the reason of the season by putting it at the end of episode 1, or get people hyped to watch the next episode with the fight scene at the start. Either way episode 2's bulk being Little Garden just works. I wouldn't want to waste 2 episodes on drum island but unfortunately chopper is too important not to... so then you have 4 episodes left for basically just alabasta. And honestly, I think that leaves a lot of room at the end for One Piece's usual saga wrap-up stuff, just like season 1 ended with.

We gotta accept that a lot of things are gonna get cut in S2. First in the list is Laboon and the giants (too expensive). They gotta focus on the more important stories, that is drum island and Alabasta. Chopper needs at least 1 ep, Alabasta probably at least 4. So the first 3 eps is where you fit everything from Lougetown to Drum Island. So if they do include Laboon and the giants, they could be turned as ‘stories’ or ‘legends’ told by a character within the ep like Noland in S1, and not show anything, and that’s fine. I’m just amazed we’re seeing a live action of One Piece that doesn’t suck!

@@tizbit4370 Naw, I liked seeing more of Garp’s and Koby’s relationship and him mentoring Koby and Helmepoo. I personally think they knocked it out of the park especially with how they did Garp.

To make Chopper the most practical he can be, I feel like they’re gonna need to change him a lot, and I think that will do him justice. CGI isn’t a good idea in my opinion, that’s why I think the correct route to take would be to make him like the main character in the show “Sweet Tooth”, where the boy is half human-half deer with cute deer ears and horns. It would make sense for chopper to look this way since he ate the human human fruit, and it would give the actor a chance to embody and learn about chopper as much as he can to bring him to life as a cute kid. Thoughts on the alleged Dragon actor are mixed atm, but what's more concerning is how they'll render Robin, Chopper, Vivi, and Sir Crocodile. I really hope we'll get more than 8 episodes considering Alabasta was a really big arc pre-timeskip, and that each episode is approached with the same dedication and passion we saw in season 1. I still think that OPLA is its own story and naturally plays out differently. I‘m not as much into the manga/anime, just tuned in since Gear Fifth, so maybe my perspective is another. To me, it’s most important that OPLA: hits the necessary plot points and emotional beats (watched in German sync and Luffy had a threat in his voice I never heard in the anime before), focuses on how it portrays emotion and feelings in this new medium, and much to my relief keeps the insults between Zoro and Sanji down. Like, right now, it’s a respectful rivalry, anything beyond that would lead into cartoonish absurdity. To me, eight episodes minimum an hour each are the perfect format to consume One Piece. I hope that they keep doing what they do with the feelings between characters, because then I have no doubt in my mind that this is going to be a fantastic story

Then the Straw Hats can confront the lower level BW guys at Reverse Mountain and move straight on to Little Garden. For s2 I see two possibilities (well 3 if you count “no s2 at all” as a possibility): 1. They set themselves up to speed run one piece in a handful of seasons by skipping through things like whiskey peak, little garden, etc. or 2. We simply do not get to Alabasta. They save Alabasta for s3, building up to it with s2 while taking the time to go from loguetown to drum island. This second option makes more sense bc you have time for your Smoker B plot, you don’t have to put chopper in an entire season, and you can keep it to an 8 episode formula without having to cut a ton of content, alienate the fanbase, and make even more changes to the story that Oda would probably grind against. However this option 2 scenario requires a mindset of “let’s just keep adapting this thing as long as Netflix lets us!” Rather than “let’s try to finish this thing in a handful of seasons for the sake of getting to the end game before they cancel us, if we can”
@HanaNoMaude
@HanaNoMaude Жыл бұрын
Going into some more detail on what s2 could look like if we don’t try to get all the way to Alabasta, divvying baroque works up into 2 parts makes a lot of sense (in an ideal world) Pt 1 loguetown to drum island your budget will go to building different settings like in s1 and figuring out what whacky creatures and powers you want to put your budget towards (Laboon, giants, dinosaurs, gold fish, Karoo, chopper…) P2 then (aka a s3) focused solely or primarily on Alabasta you don’t have to have as many diverse settings so some of that budget can reallocate to a larger scale battle at the climax of the war Also not trying to speed run the baroque works saga, you have plenty of material to pull from. Like how Garp got played up more in s1 (for better or worse) you could for example move some of Ace’s stuff up. Instead of missing the straw hats in drum island, you could start to sow the seeds of meeting him earlier (following closer to anime vs manga logic where he spends more time with the crew come time in Alabasta). Maybe even build his backstory pulling from the light novels. And you could hint at more Roger stuff if you end up spending time with crocus, and plant Easter eggs for the rumbar pirates. You could also sow seeds for Blackbeard, having him start to work as a Sephiroth like background villain presence in drum island where you know he’s there and start to get a sense of the threat, all while adding to the world building as news comes in about the brewing Alabasta conflict that Vivi and the crew are working towards. Hell they could even beef up Wapol’s character dev by pulling from recent reverie things (thinking of buggy’s s1 line about how shanks betrayed him…) Capping a s2 w drum island could land emotionally w Hiriluk and kureha and chopper all while the world builds and tension mounts to tee up Alabasta as a climactic s3 epic
@thettioo
@thettioo Жыл бұрын
But there's a little problem for not reaching Alabasta within season 2. There's no big threat between Loudgetown and Drum Island. Like big main villain like Arlong in East Blue. While adapting slowly might be better as a series, you gotta remember that, even if they did really well in season 1, it's still netflix and it's still a business. And if they want to go anywhere before being axed, they gotta start picking things up, especially considering the arcs only get longer from here

I think your option is quite smart actually. It allows us to really bond with Vivi and have her be a crewmate for two seasons, gives Usopp more time to shine, properly set up the mystique of the Grandline, allows a bit more breathing room than S1 had at times allowing the crew to have more quieter moments to bond, and of course giving focus to someone like Jamie Lee Curtis to be Dr. Kureha. Though curious how they will handle Robin and the sort of bait and switch we got in the manga (us thinking plausibly Vivi joins the crew when it turns out to be Robin all along lol). Cause yeah...thinking about Shadow and Bone them bumrushing through Alabasta would be their equivalent of rushing through the second and third books of the original trilogy. I get why they did it, but it did not help us sell people on that world and piss off fans. It also keeps hyping up Baroque Works as this mega-threat, which given how Crocodile manhandles Luffy until the Grand Tomb? Make sense. Another thing is the budget with Alabasta wouldn't be too bad then right? Cause if its mostly set in a deserty-region (A Summer Island in the lore) they just gotta build sets out in California or film somewhere that would not be too bad for cost. Maybe Mexico cause they could film LIttle Garden there and then go back to do Alabasta.

I can imagine that they might squeeze the Lougue Town arc to 10-20 minutes of the first episode, similarly to what they did with Alvida. The Straw Hats stop there to restock, the marines spot them, and there is a cool chase scene where the crew escaped. Though if they do the scaffolding scene, it might be a surprise cut to begin the episode. After that, the rest of the episode will be centred Reverse Mountain and Laboon.

I've heard that in the industry, new shows always get 2 seasons greenlit. This explains why even badly received projects like Velma get second seasons.

I definitely like your season 1 scenario regarding Kobi and Helmeppo more than what we saw. And yeah, true, Netflix f-ed up when it comes to the distribution of season 1. There would have been more question marks for the next episode and more excitement and that's what keeps an audience hooked.

I think the optimal setup for Season 2 would be E1 - Loguetown/Reverse Mountain E2 - Laboon/Whiskey Peak E3 - Little Garden 1 E4 - Little Garden 2 E5 - Drum 1 E6 - Drum 2 E7 - Meeting Bon Clay on the way to Alabasta E8 - Arrival at Alabasta (Cliffhanger revealing Ace to be Luffy's brother) And then have Season 3 focused on the meat and potatoes of Alabasta, with the last 1 or 2 episodes focused on Jaya.
@MarshalDTeachh
@MarshalDTeachh Жыл бұрын
@@ogshub I like both of the optimizations, but I hope they give a little more than 8 episodes. It may be unlikely, considering budget production costs, but that would be a better move overall considering Alabasta is one of the biggest arcs pre-timeskip.

I think having the live action end with the straw hats sailing off holding up their arms up to show their friendship with Vivi would be a perfect way to get people invested enough to complete the story via the anime or manga.

I'm interested to see how they do Choppa. I think with their budget, they could do a actor in a Choppa makeup and costume, and it would be fire! That way they could dedicate more of the budget on the Choppa transformations. I can't wait to see Crocodile too. Him and Doflamingo are two of my favorite One Piece villains.

They really need to make special episodes between seasons. They would keep interest between long breaks + it would tie the story together. For example, if we have special for Loguetown, that way we get content + Season 2 would be Alabasta Saga

Admittedly is easier when this show is working with a lot of foresight in the series that Oda probably didn't have at this point in the story when he was writing it. So that is cool, no doubt.

Garp being framed as stuck in the past and not open to the future is completely contradictory to what we know now in the manga, but if they can write it in a convincing way to that point in the next season it could be salvaged.

This is a great opportunity for Oda to do his original vision of Chopper by instead of making him a cute mascot and instead keeping him in his muscular monster mode instead of the miniature baby human reindeer mode. Also givr him more significance as a member instead of a side character.

I'd prefer this as a One Piece fan, but I can't see them go with this route, because they would simply miss out on a potential Baby Yoda in terms of merchandise, which Netflix is definitely interested in.
