That’s a really nice tractor. Before you decide whether to keep the cab or not, I’d suggest looking up the serial number and seeing if you can find how it was originally configured. Some things won’t be right if you take the cab off, like the decal placement of the 4020 number, which should then be moved to behind the engine. Also, those fender are integral to the cab, so you’d need to get fenders as well. While that isn’t a Deere cab, it is extremely close to the factory cab option we had on our 4320, so I’m thinking it was still a factory option, or dealer install, even though it was made by another company. You should wear hearing protection in there though. The noise levels are actually louder than without the cab and much higher than safe levels. I’m sure your ears were ringing after using it so that is your sign that hearing protection is needed. Beautiful tractor and congrats on the purchase.

Still have my Dads 4020 that’s identical to yours. It was the first tractor he ever bought brand new. I will never ever sell it. Haulin hay is good for you! New holland bale wagon makes it even better! The only problem with baling small bales, especially with a Deere is if you’re not on the ball watching as your windrow thins or gets bigger, it will bale odd sized bales. Gotta watch it as it goes ion the pickup head to make sure there’s an even flow. It’s not bunching up or it’s pulling the windrow apart. Nice, even flow. I still bale about 5k

Keep the cab add some fans in the corners, the cab keeps the sun, wind and rain out plus I'm not sure about how much noise it keeps out. The safety factor also just like the young kid riding along while you were bailing, he is not going fall off-out of the tractor. I know this from personnel experience when I fell off a tractor fender luckily I didn't get hurt, but could have bin terrible .

Nice, Grant! Keep the cab. Fix or install AC. That boy is an animal! One quick tip for doing small squares. Dont just use your arms to lift them over your head. Pick up the bale, then use your knee to boost them up. Use your arms to add to the momentum after you knee it. It's much less tiring that way.

Uncle Buch got some Competition. Nice tractor, Grant. Now you could run the Mower/Baler on one 4020 and Rake / Tedder with the other one. If you guys goes with a wheel Rake in the V Style and a decent 2 pull type Tedder, (Older models don't use Hydraulic, so can be pulled by smaller tractor, We currently pull our two row Tedder with a 230 IH or 40 John deere. That would increase your hay operation and baling operation). With that cab on the 4020, i would recomend a Tar River, Plastic 3-point Dry box Spreader. They run new about 900, but would be good to run loose/Pellets fertilizer/Grass Broadcast over your grass and corn field in the spring or fall and using the other tractor to disk or Cullipact the seed and fertilizer into the ground

I don't remember which one of our 4020 or 4320 had the power shift or if they were later models with the side console for hydraulics. They were both great tractors. IF the cab is in good shape, keep it. While you are not dealing with animals in winter, it is nice to be out of the wind. I am sure you can add an aftermarket heater and cooler. Side note, if you don't want to exit the cab really quickly, as in falling on your face, come down backwards. (facing the interior of the cab.

Keep the cab. It'll be good for shade. Get a short piece of square tubing & bolt a magnet to one side & a 12v fan to the other side. The square tubing acts as a handle & the magnet allows you to stick it to any place in the cab with metal. Cheap solution in the absence of ac. I usually have mine blowing on the front-right side of my face. Portable, easily positioned, & only limited by the availability of 12v outlets.

When we got our 4020, we took the cab off. It’s more noisy with a cab actually, and hotter like you already said. The fenders don’t seem to be the most secure without the cab though. I quite like the look of the tractor with just a canopy. Also, look up the “grove conversion” for those SCVs. They’re much nicer couplers to use and never leak. The standard ISO conversion doesn’t seem to last more than 500hrs without needing new seals.
