I agree that the portfolio is more important than a resume. However, many job application portals require a cover letter as well. I never know what to write on these. Could you make a video on this topic? Specifically for graphic designers.

@@JakeWolven Hi, unfortunately not much progress in the sense I'm still unemployed. On my resume however, I broke down past projects into bullet points on what skills I contributed. I think it's helped in the sense that I now get actual emails of rejection whereas before I got just radio silence, haha

I don’t have experience either. What I have done though which helps in that field is that you could list the projects you’ve completed within your education. For example, I’m looking to work in the product design area of work and in college, I’ve completed a couple projects from start to finish (client info gathering, idea development, prototype creation, final sketch and final product model creation) for a specialised beach hut, seating for the pedestrianisation of a town centre near me, and a whole project based off of a singular sentence: light and shade.

I went to UNI for mediamatics and cultural heritage. The problem with this is that it doesnt cover that I have majored in graphic design. That I took classes where I did stop motion videos, learned how to use photoshop, illustrator, indesign, premiere and after effect. It doesnt show that I did journalist work, that I made short videos, did audio editing and learned how to stand infrond of a crowd and present stuff in limited time. Most people dont know what mediamatics IS and the cultural heritage was there just because students could also take classes in book printing archive keeping and just history classes. (Like I took art history) How do I explain this without writing too much?

I think just include these items under your “skills” section. If you are applying for a graphic design job then obviously you’ll include your portfolio. Upon reviewing your portfolio, employers will recognize your quality of work and be able to easily recognize if you truly do have a background in these fields.

Thank you, this was really helpful as I'm currently in the process of updating everything. It's been 10 years and I feel rusty but It seems like I'm on the right tack. The only question I have is I don't have as much web or Ui/ Ux and motion graphics experience and I really wish I did because the design industry is going that direction and print is less and less. I love packaging but that's very niche so its harder to get into. Do you have any recommendations on how to get started with learning that stuff and beefing up your skills on a budget while unemployed? Lol

Then you don’t have it, and if they require it, you’ll have to move on to the next job opening! Some places value your experience and portfolio more than a degree, in the creative field a degree doesn’t equal expertise

Curious as to how you would bring up work that you’ve done for a company you worked for but we’re not allowed to use for your portfolio. I have worked for a few company’s for a 2 - 3 year period and have nothing in my portfolio to show for it due to those kinds of restrictions. I have great references from those places, but no portfolio work showing what I did for those companies.

Did you sign an NDA? If you’re not legally bound then you should be fine unless there’s sensitive info that you don’t feel comfortable with, in that case change the info/names etc

certainly you did projects for a company, or entity of some sort. so yea definitely point to those and would be really helpful to include them in your portfolio. maybe you could list the amount of time spent if it was significant, like the project spanned 3 months etc

I appreciate the kind words. Flash is discontinued and Dreamweaver is something I’ve never used very much. The programs I have channels on are my most used Adobe products. However I have thought about doing web design tutorials from some of the larger sites like Squarespace, Wix, etc. Just have to decide where to put them
