Judo Legends: Shinichi Shinohara - Judo Highlights (篠原 信一 柔道のハイライト )

Shinichi Shinohara is a retired Japanese judoka, who competed in +100 kg and Open weight categories. He is 2-time World Champion and Olympic silver medalist (many believe he was robbed of gold medal in the final of 2000 Olympic games). S. Shinohara was a perfect example how good control of opponents upper body can lead to massive throws, he had tremendous O Soto Gari, Uchi Mata, he is also one of rare judokas that can count Uchi Mata Sukashi (counter to Uchi Mata) as their tokui waza (favorite technique). After his Judo career Shinohara became popular celebrity in Japanese TV shows and films, he is one of the characters in Yakuza Kiwami video game.

He started judo when he entered junior high school. But he kept skipping practice, making all kinds of excuses. So he had no achievements during this period. To begin with, he planned to work instead of going to high school. However, the local high school judo club, noticing his size, scouted him out. The head coach of the judo club was a classmate of Yoshimi Masaki, a former world champion, at Tenri University, who provided very violent coaching to him. He couldn't skip practice like he did in junior high since he was very afraid of the head coach. He participated in several national tournaments during his high school days, but couldn't advance to the top ranks. So when he entered Tenri University, people didn't have high expectations for him. But he made a big breakthrough here, and by the time he graduated from University, he'd surpassed even Yoshiharu Makishi(1997 world open silver medalist), a star player who was a year his junior. You're well aware of his subsequent achievements.

One of my sensei’s is 6’5 240 pounds, solid and built like a brick shit house. And technically amazing. In his hayday he went to Japan and fought a bunch of dudes, beat most of them actually, when he faced Shinohara in a local competition he said the guy felt like he was made out of a tree, he could not move him.

there's a commentated japanese show on youtube with Shinohara, Suzuki and Inoue talking about their japanese open championship fights with each other with the video footage, there was a funny part where Shinohara was defeated by Inoue in one of his last fights, where when Shinohara when he bowed and left the tatami, he waved and thanked the crowd thinking it were supporters of his university club where he trained, but he was actually waving at the wrong crowd and was thanking and bowing for Inoue's club if i remember correctly, It was Inoue that pointed that out, they laughed so hard at that and said, only things like that could happen with Shinohara xD link below! english subtitles. could be in the next video about the 2004 championship instead of the 2003, anyways a joy to watch, gives a whole other perspective on how competition works on the highest level. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5u9daGnr89rjdE

By the way, before that fight they were 1-1 in the H2H, with Shinohara being the only to have scored an ippon in their three confrontation (in 1995) while, Douillet first victory came to "home scoring" shido (1997).
