There are 2 ways to do this technique (neither are the "proper" way) that will both destroy uke's knee. One is to come in with the bottom leg low at about the ankle and the upper leg just above the knee. The other way is to jump butt first into uke's knee collapsing it inward, and usually tearing his ACL (sometimes also getting the MCL, PCL and meniscus in the process). It is a brutal technique that is rightfully banned. It was legal when I started in judo, and I did it in randori once. My coach lost it on me and made it very clear we do not use that technique at our club. I never did it again. The sad thing is there were some people who would use it as a desperation technique to try to injure their opponent if they were behind on the scoreboard. I am one of the old guys who doesn't agree with the IJF banning leg grabs, but I 100% supported the decision to ban this technique.

Its a career ending, life alternating injury. Its like a submission but the opponent does even get the time to tap out. Even in mma, most submissions, the opponent gets the time to tap out. This move will breal multiple bones, ligaments and tendons in less then a sec.

one of my favorites... and in our dojo, almost everyone shodan and higher was focusing on it for about half a year... really fun in casual randori, but i don't use it when we go more intense and start to block every time when able (normal randori we block, when the attempt was without much of a chance, but don't block attempts, that look like they would work)

I've used the move effectively many times in wrestling practice, and it is still legal in freestyle wrestling. In fact, the move was used at the Final X world team trials just a week ago. It didn't work, but it was used. I think the problem is with heavyweights. Lighter weights, having less muscle mass and density, can use the technique with no problem, but with really heavy guys there is too much pressure and weight, at least in judo.

Timing is essential. Also, your opponents balance has to be backward. The injuries occur when someone is trying to throw backwards when their opponents weight is forward.

It was an excellent throw guys. Injuries can occur with any throw, the reason is not that. In the pursuit of mass sports equipment everywhere is gradually simplified. When grappling by the pants was banned in judo - was it really because of injuries? it's just that some people didn't know how to use these grips - and envied those who did....
