When they invent a time machine, 1977 is the first place I’m going, to see the greatest year of the greatest band that ever lived! God Bless The Grateful Dead!!!!

In the 70s sometimes the first sets were really the second sets and the feeling was that anything could happen at any time. Great sound on this one and '77 was a fantastic year! By the 80s their concerts started to conform to a more rigid structure with the shorter first set featuring maybe one jammy song either opening or closing the set. Then the second set with more extensive or exploratory jamming, drums and space in the middle, then the Jerry death song, the Bob let's cheer up and rock song, and a variable encore with some nights markedly better than others on that count. The "Grateful Dead package" my more cynical friends dubbed it. As stale as that could get at times, every once in a while - particularly at favorite venues like the Berkeley Greek, the Oak- Aud/Kaiser, BCT, and the Frost - they would snap out of it, pull out the stops, and show that they still had it big time.

"Like so many ’77 shows, this one is tight and magical from top to bottom but also has some real surprises throughout. The first set is an absolute monster, proceeding in excellent form with a strong Bertha opening, a really solid Loser, and a beautiful They Love Each Other. Then, right when you think the band might be looking for set break, they launch into an Estimated and follow it with nothing less than a magical Terrapin. Yet even after that they still come forth with more, rolling into a Playing-Samson sandwich. The second set seems like it cannot possibly live up to the first, but it does, beginning with an amazing Eyes that goes into a totally funky Dancing, onto which Phil unleashes a torrent of stratospheric cluster bombs. A towering Wharf Rat follows with Jerry dominating on vocals and guitar. The Franklin’s> Sugar Mags to close out the set are almost to much to take with their beauty, speed, and perfection. Anyone would have went home happy at this point, but instead we are all treated to a double encore of a rocking One More Saturday Night and a stupendous, celebratory Uncle John’s. Winterland Arena served as a kind of home base for the Grateful Dead throughout the 1970s. Winterland originally opened in 1928 as an ice skating rink that converted to a 5400-seat music venue. Through the years, the place was host to everything from boxing matches to opera to vaudeville on ice. Beginning with a Jefferson Airplane and Butterfield Blues Band show in 1966, Bill Graham started to rent Winterland for rock and roll shows that would draw far more than the Fillmore West could accommodate. And, after the demise of the Fillmore West in 1971, Winterland became Graham’s - and the Grateful Dead’s - main West Coast home. Over the years just about every major rock and roll act of the 1970s came through the place, including The Band's stupendous final show, which was immortalized in the film The Last Waltz. The place would eventually host sixty or so Dead concerts before the band played the famous Closing of Winterland show on New Year’s 1978/1979." (gratefuldeadoftheday.com) "A couple of days ago, I complained that the Grateful Dead’s 3/14/81 Hartford concert had two first sets. Well, tonight’s show is the opposite of that one. Here, the Dead throw down two second sets of blistering 1977 bliss, plus a double encore for a hometown crowd. There are no bad songs tonight, but each set has its own highlight sequence. The first set jam sequence starts with a very nice Terrapin Station, which, for me, means that it’s not too long. But it is almost entirely mistake free, which is almost unheard of. This moves into a dynamic Playin’ in the Band and a fired-up Samson and Delilah. But my favorite part, by far, is the Playin’ reprise, which is another 11 minutes long and goes far out there and back again, with some honest spaciness and tons of playing between Jerry and Phil, plus Keith at his best and Bob’s shading providing extra enjoyment. The second set is equally stupendous, opening with another song, Eyes, that I think works best when it’s not too too long. At fourteen minutes, this one is pushing it, but everyone plays the hell out of it and you don’t get bored at all. The Dead blow the vocal opening to disco Dancin’, as they usually do, but the transition, musically, is great. I’m at a loss to explain why this happens almost every time they play this song. When they move into Wharf Rat, look out. The end of this tune, for sheer intensity, is right up there with any version of this song I’ve ever heard. Don’t skip it - just wait for the build. And then there is a turbo-charged Franklin’s Tower that never loses momentum throughout its thirteen minutes of fun and then, after a somewhat chaotic opening to Sugar Magnolia, the band settles down and ends on a high note. But wait - after a first encore of One More Saturday Night, the band stays on stage for the rare double encore (perhaps to make up for the slightly truncated second set?) And it’s fan-favorite Uncle John’s Band to bring us home in style. What’s not to love about this one? It’s got the jams. It’s got a bunch of other great songs in the first set too. All played with the band’s own brand of silky-smooth 1977 almost perfection." (dailydoseofdead.com)

Greetings from Sacramento, California, USA at 10:57 am, PDT. After scrolling down to see the set lists I immediately said to my self "Oh my god, what an awesome show that was!" 1977 was one of my favorite Grateful Dead years because that was the year they released their latest studio album, Terrapin Station, which I fully embraced and devoured every track, especially the title track featuring the segment, Lady wirh a Fan. I have not listened to this show yet, I'm saving it for tonight, when at 8:58 pm it wiil officially be the Vernal Equinox, the first day of Spring. I will sit down in my comfy chair, put on my headphones, crack open an ice cold Guinness, spark up a fatty, and then listen to this show in it's entirety. I wish I could say I was at this show, but alas, I was not. But I will be there tonight! Thank you Okie Deadhead for providing us with yet another fine Northern California Dead show. "...California, knocking on the golden door..." Cheers, Mick Flaire. ~{💛(:*🤗*:)💛}~
