I still say "Tons of Steel" is the most tragically underrated song in the entire Dead catalogue. Nice to see it shine in a live setting at last.

+Seth Campbell It really is. It's tailor-made for the Dead. Should have played it more with a real "Casey Jones" feeling.

Phil Lesh is the most melodic bass player in history. Very underrated.

I agree with the melodic bass player bit; Mike Gordon (Phish) follows in his foot steps. However, underrated? Only to the uninitiated, good sir :)

I was at this show. I was blowin a conch shell and almost rolled out in front of a car on a skatebaord and a guy grabbed me and saved my life. thanks dude! Jerrys playing got real muddy when dylan came out. alot of face rubbing, if you get what Im saying.

I loved 86-90, Brent was feeling more comfortable and I thought he really started to shine. These years to me felt like the band was well seasoned, older and wiser and still had great energy. Some of my favorites to be sure, until Brent passed in 1990.
@ghays9742
@ghays9742 2 жыл бұрын
Yep if you closely observe the various shows, from 87-90 were by far the most energetic with the best vibes. Positive Energy was surging. Other than that time span the years with Pigpen were also amazing. The other formats with Keith, Donna and then Vince were not on the same level. People will voraciously attack anyone suggesting this but when you listen without bias it is clearly a superior time from 88-90 and then you will notice a real sinkhole at the point when Brent passed on. Pigpen was a major source of energy as well. The post Psuedo Dead bands were below the sinkhole almost void of energy as is the current whatever band touring today. After Garcia passed on they should have just stuck with solo band individual projects those are great too. Phil Lesh carried the torch the best with his band which really had some great mojo. Any reformation of the Dead has been fairly sad and the fans desperately pretending is even sadder. Then their are the jam band copy cats which are so bad they really need to figure out how to write a song and be original. Brent was truly a top notch musician and Pigpen.

This was the concert that converted me into a full-blown Deadhead. Loved the band for many years before but never saw them on stage. (Had tickets for shows cancelled during Jerry's coma.) This concert blew my mind and I totally got it. Wished I had understood when I bought my first album, "Terrapin Station." Fortunately saw many other concerts in the late '80s. Thanks for posting!

Man I was at this show and while the recording is ok,it does not do justice.I've seen the Grateful Dead from Ventura to Mountain Air ,Calaveras Co.And this was the best they ever sounded.IMHO. Brings back some of the memories from the best times of my life.Jerry was really in the pocket for the whole show which sadly isn't represented here.

Yes it was a Madonna t-shirt, she'd played at Anaheim Stadium the night before and Bobby (Wier) found one of her T-shirts backstage and, pre-hipster, wore it because he's a badass (just look at his unapologetic short shorts). Unless you count "hipsters, tripsters, real cool chicksters, everyone's Doin' that Rag" In which case the Dead called out hipsters decades before they became a thing, or a thing again, since hipsters were in fact mentioned in that lyric.
@ghays9742
@ghays9742 2 жыл бұрын
Hilarious comment! Yeah the hipsters now go to copycat band shows spending their retirement money while the rest of us scramble to survive. Bobby was cool to just be himself that is what it's all about not caring what other people think. Then they suddenly "think" you're cool. Weird

Was there. The nearest clapping hands visible at 1:10:13 are mine. Being 6'8", I didn't want to block others' views, so I stood just in front of the tapers' section: two long tables 8' high, with ~15 pairs of stereo microphones. Hadn't realized, until just now, that they were also videotaping. Three hours earlier, I had scored a sheet (50 hits) of Lysergic in the parking lot. Walking into the stadium, the P.A. speakers began playing Sergeant Pepper, and I remember "Lovely Rita" and "Getting Better" sounding so clear. Phil's bass had a great effect on me, and when I watched Mickey drum, his sticks seemed to bounce suddenly back from the skins, as if he were playing backwards. The giant monochrome display, halfway through the concert, was rendering a shimmering effect, similar to that seen toward the end of this video. To this day, I still don't know if that shimmering was a real video effect, or just the dose. This concert was a spiritual experience for me, and helped to change how I see the world. Was 21yo, now 57, and I still have six tabs in my freezer, from that sheet of 50.
