Many Grateful Dead songs and lyrics evolved into what they were meant to be. We all know it was written about Mickey's dad, but it evolved into anything but what it was written about. There are many metaphors and double, triple meaning lyrics in GD music, whether they knew it or not, it's part of the beauty of their music.

What's interesting is that this song actually has nothing to do with someone dying yet over the years has definitely taken on that double meaning. Was written about Lenny Hart, father of Mickey Hart, who was managing the band and ran off with all their money. "Rat in a drain ditch, caught on a limb, you know better but I know him."

311 dead shows (with jerry) and I made it to the first row,dead center exactly twice.First was opening night at Radio City music Hall in October of 1980.Second was Nassau Coliseum 1980 something ,I should know the exact date,oh well.On this night as my girlfriend and I celebrated this miracle of "working it to 1st row", Bobby came to the Mike and said "this one's for Bobby Sands", an Irish activist who had died in a hunger strike earlier that day.It was maybe my favorite moment at a show,it was very similar to this version in its revival like sound..Oh,the beautiful memories of having these guys follow me for 20 plus years.......

Ok, there is a lot of back and forth as to who this He's Gone is about, where, when, etc. The Nassau show is mentioned. I was not there but wore out a tape of that show in the 80's. I distinctly recall Bobby saying Bobby Sands at the beginning. That show was from May 6, 1981 at Nassau and is Dick's Pick. This recording is from 05/12/1981 at the Veterans Memorial in New Haven, CT. Marley died on May 11 in Miami. Two different He's Gone from two different venues on the same tour. I referenced dead.net and archive.org.

People think this is some kind of a memorial song. Though it does sound like one, and they use it as one, the lyrics are mainly about Micky''s father (their manager from 1971-1974), who stole $100 of thousands of dollars from the band in 1970. That's why he quit for 4 yrs

I messed up...The one time I heard this I thought it was when RON left us. Yet I think they did it then too...I amy be completely off base so any help would be cool. I mean I can spend an hour looking it all up, When they started to do this tune, When Ron left the time coincidences, The shows....But I know there are a lot of folks out there that know a lot more than I do about certain details. Like the note changes from one nights show to another...I love the band but as a guitar player I never even got that engrossed in it. Anyway....Peace! Oh and yes this was written about lenny Hart stealing the band's money and running off... RM1133 reminded me of that fact...Thank you.

It was BOBBY SANDS, not BOB MARLEY (the died a million years before). I was at this show and it was one of the very few times the GD made a social/political comment. Bob Weir did the tribute, and he's Irish/Scottish or something like that as I am and probably had some feelings for the IRA martyr, which Sands was (starved himself to death in prison for his cause). Not to discredit Bob Marley, an extremely talented person.

horsemann12 I find his harmonies perfect for this particular era of GD, and definitely find his ivories especially ticklish. And nothing (seriously, nothirng) against Donna Jean, but Mydlands rasp serves as a counter to the lady's sometimes intoxicating celebration. It bodes the collective well to have this pained, strained accent to the decade where they actualized the motif where their catalogue finally found its level. :when the band began a reflective and iconic presence. His world weary voice fits, to me, into the more complete and anthemic Dead, as an obvious stake of flawed humanity, and a less than perfect yet again replacement for the original blues belter, the first member the Collective lost. I obviously took years to come to this reasoning and appreciation , go further and you may see this side of the hill. (grass ain't greener, just more luminous.)
@MrGOW3fan8 жыл бұрын
+z lstpedestrian I mean I respect your opinion, and Brent's playing is not too bad if I may say lol, but one reason I fell in love the Dead and that era of music is simply because they were imperfectly perfect if that makes sense. Not the best singers, something the mainstream holds above all else for some fuck all reason, but they could play. Don't get me wrong I think jerrys voice (for instance)is one of the most beautiful things I've heard because it proves if you perform from the heart, you're presence is elevated. But when Brent comes in straining since he can't sing softly like his partners, it knocks them out of balance. It's just one of those things like how you want to sew your ears up when you hear axl rose, though Brent is on a monolith above that shitbag. Plus they weren't 'playing for their lives' since they were financially stable and other personal issues when Brent joined so he kind of just stands out as a replacement for Keith for me. Maybe one day I'll get him
