Amazing player! It's really difficult explain clearly what Jerry Garcia's playing so like this.... listen music together and learn what Jerry's playing? Bob's rhythm guitar is awesome too! It's simple yet not easy!

I love how you addressed when people are improving, they aren’t necessarily thinking about a particular mode. Rather they are feeling the music which may have certain modal characteristics. Not to say people aren’t thinking about a mode or certain scale when exercising however I feel not many people point out just playing what you hear/ feel. Thank you for the video tomo!!

I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos. Your unique talents for teaching/instruction combined with your humility, and humour make for very captivating understanding and learning. A perfect example of all of this in one is toward the end of the video where you are explaining Jerry's style and influences and then vamp off into country and then say distraction at the end, LMAOF. I love the human and personal interaction with your audience trying to bring the teaching experience like one in which a student is with you in your studio, like when you describe your gear. I am definitely going to join guitar wisdom. You said any more requests. Was wondering if you could do Duane Allman. I know he does slide but his melodies are so amazing and they do alot of the major scale.

Thank you for this excellent video! This is now my favorite video about teaching a "Jerry-style" solo. You teach the first lesson I have seen that emphasizes the importance of sharing the feeling and being in the spirit of live music. Others have been able to show what to do, but you have amazingly been able to convey to me HOW to do it! Lots of information here, and lots to practice. I had to pause and replay the video several times from around 6:05 - 8:00 so I could write down everything you said. Some incredible insight and wisdom into what live music is all about!

Tomo! When you skip the major 7th its referred to as the "gospel" scale. Some construe it as major pentatonic plus the 4th. Both are right! You are the man!

This leads to a deeper discussion of how sad the major 7 sounds for a major interval, which is a great teaching device.

I'm simply amazed by the way you traverse across the frets in your improvisation. As an amateur in the path of self- discovering how to develop fret knowledge I'm doing a brute force methodology of using movable-do notation background to figure out which box I'm in by mapping the current note to get the scale. Like if on B string I hit 'la' with forefinger then I realise I'm in D box or instead of forefinger I hit 'la' using ring finger I assign 'la' as C# and assign E box. Do people use this methodology at all or do you really learn the frets absolutely by heart? The thing is I'll have to hit a note to know the box. I'll never be able to know absolute notes before knowing the box.

What are the 3 levels?
@TomoFujitaMusic4 жыл бұрын
Please watch this video! Everything is there! Thank you!!
@AaronLS.4 жыл бұрын
1. Understand the 1-4 quick progression to added color. The song is B to E. But you add the 4th on each. B to a quick E and E to a quick A. 2. Learn 3 Jerry phrases 3. ? I didn't hear a level 3 Other tips: Only listen to small bits at a time. Pick a few minutes of Jerry's solo and listen to it on repeat a ton. Jerry isn't limited to one scale. It's more chord times/triads/arpeggios. It's not locked into one scale such as mixolydian. It's "around" a major scale. That gives him the ability to feel and improvise with the other notes (2, b3, 6, b7, 7, etc.). Jerry goes between playing a melody lead and playing "rhythm" lead. Tomo's examples of how changing rhythm over the same notes completely changes everything. Learning more than 3 things at a time is not practical and people will have difficulty applying it.
@AaronLS.4 жыл бұрын
Love your lessons. Very valuable practical stuff. It might help the viewers to clearly state the 3 things in the beginning, then show them with the lesson, then review them at the end. Also, it's helpful when you explain what you are playing. I'm working on my ear and know I should be able to hear it. But I'm an amateur any explanation helps. Like how you described that mixolydian dyadic walk down. Very helpful. Hope those comment help. Thanks again for your teaching. I appreciate it!
