Stills is the most underrated man in the English-speaking musical world. An absolute giant.

It is one of my absolute favorite Dead recordings. Felt it should be up here for all to enjoy.

Just read that Stills actually penned "Black Queen" for the Dead to record on Workingman's Dead. Infinitely fascinating how these fine musicians intermingled with each other in their day.

Odd. Stills sang it on Just Roll Tape.

I have a bootleg where in between takes in the studio where he tells Crosby : .."I dug playin' with the Dead a SHITLOAD more than playing with the Airplane" ... I guess this was what he was talking about

Guitar solo at the beginning reminds me a good deal of "Wooden Ships"

@electricragtime This is like the funk version of this fine tune.. No cocaine used here.. It most likely went on for another 20 minutes or so, They just cut it off for the recording, after 11!!

Is this Thelma Theater, December 6th(5-7th?) of 1969? I remember having at least part of it on tape decades ago. Probably still have it, though i doubt it is playable anymore. Acid drenched days.

Oh, i just saw the clip on here said Dec 10, 1969. Had to take my glasses off and look real close. My ears still work thankfully. Have different hearing in each ear. That makes for some interesting music, a little wonky when conversating though.

Steve a better guitar player than Jerry. Better singer, too. Great to know they knew each other.

are you trying to start some mess with me? what u say is tantamount to blasphemy. ~wink~ seriously, both are amazing musicians

Stills a better guitarist than Jerry Garcia? I don't think so. Jerry is far more versatile. He also played banjo and steel guitar.

don't think it's worth the debate. very different guitarists, both incredibly talented. Each delivers a different sound but both outstanding. Jerry may have been able to handle other instruments but Stills is a soulful songwriter in his own right and knows how to deliver a sound that rounds the bend 'round the delta blues but still effaces humble rock.

Define better. I'd say he's 1/10th the guitar player Jerry is.
