WorldOfRock4U It still amazes me to this day that Neil Young is listed as "lead guitar" on Buffalo Springfield's first album. Jeeeeezzzzz!!! Any guitar player worth his salt KNOWS that Stills was a much more talented guitar player. Young was and is still a fantastic songwriter but as a guitar player he is very unimaginative and a "one trick pony" Gimme Stephen Stills any day !
@familiarpurrson87449 жыл бұрын
I think they did that because either Greene, Stone or someone on the production chain was 'creeped out' by Young's voice, so this 'bone' was thrown to him-I'm trying to recall if he sang lead on any of the songs used in the album. Really, Young, Stills, and Furay all played lead guitar on various tracks, did they not?

I haven"t read through all the comments, so I don't know if I am repeating what someone has already said, but Stephen Stills did speak about how he got into guitar. He grew up in a small town in Alabama. There was a black blues singer and guitarist who was amazing. Stephen Stills learned guitar from this man. His guitar shows it in everything, but in this song in particular. He is a brilliant guitarist, and because of how he learned guitar, he has also always been fiercely anti-racist. Stephen Stills is brilliant.

Actually. Stephen Stills was a military brat who was born in Dallas and grew up in Gainesville and Tampa, FL; Covington, LA; Costa Rica and the Panama Canal Zone (see Wikipedia). But he mostly grew up in Covington, LA, patterning this guitar style after a black man there named Charlie Harris ( see kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp7Zn32sbbp0npI at the 0:25 second mark).

Hendrix said of Billy Gibbons "...he is the future of rock guitar"; Jimi also jammed with Stills, Windwood, and many other legends before he passed. 90% of what passes for talent today would be like a Bic lighter flickering compared to the brilliance of those artist from the 60's and 70's (some, like Winwood, Gibbons, etc. continued to shine in the 80's, 90's, and the new millenium, their artistic integrity totally intact for their multi-decade careers). "Country musicians" ("rock", etc. too) today trying to be hip-hop artist, ok, you you can rhyme over a drum machine, woopie, try penning your own songs, playing your own instruments (live), singing live unaided by tech. cover-ups: originality, true talent honed by practice and dedication (hard work), what a concept!

I got to see his very beautiful white grand piano. J. Clark took me there, to help me get over a dark time. I performed in Boulder back then, played a lot in Open G, since I was age 16 (learned off the first two Joni Mitchell albums..she learned her open tunings from, I think, Eric Anderson), but when I visited Still's home, Stills wasn't there, he must've been at his home with his French wife, possibly in France. I think this is the best tone of any acoustic I've ever heard. So mellow and strong low tones are to me just ear candy!!!! Matin D 45 - I have to find one some day.

One of the all-time greats, in both guitar and vocals. Saw him, Nash, and the late David Crosby at the site of the original Woodstock. Fabulous show! Brought back deep memories of how music should be. Go Stephen!

The tuning is: c# g# c# f# a# c# This tuning also sounds great with "Don't Let it Bring You Down" by Neil Young

I do it in DADDAD, as well as Suite Judy Blue Eyes and FInd the Cost of Freedom. It works just fine. Also works for the Eagles "Too Many Hands".

This is how I play a lot of Still' stuff-but the true Bruce Palmer tuning is DDDDAD. I prefer having the extra 5th instead of 5 root notes. St: Judy Blue Eyes (on the album) is in E-same tuning-you can put a capo on the 2nd fret or tune it to E. In concert, they usually play it in D. C is about as low as you can go.

The vocal harmonizations (new word?) with his lead beginning at 3:22 are nothing short of genius!
