I said "fuck it" and gathered up some clothed and jumped in my van to head to San Francisco to meet with all the dead heads that I knew would be thinking like me. When I got into my van I just happen to have a cassette from a late 70's show in the deck and wouldn't you know when I started up the van this song was playing. Blew me away.

My dad passed away when I was 14. He was the biggest Deadhead I ever knew: he only listened to them and introduced me when my young self never would've found them otherwise. "Steal your face right off your head." Amazing to see how deeply the lyrics resonate with other people dealing with loss here
@AJ_Deadshow5 жыл бұрын
Little did Jerry know when playing this song that in 6 years, 1 month, and 1 week, we'd have tears welling in our eyes, thinking of him as we listen... Now he's the one who is gone. He stole your face off your head the way it should have been. For those who don't know, this song was written for the events that transpired after Lenny Hart stole $160,000 from the band and fled to California. There, he would become a minister and met his demise through drug abuse. Today, and since the day it was first performed, to us deadheads, it can be a song in memoriam of anyone who has passed away, or stole from us and isn't coming back. That's one thing I love about their songwriting and performance. The lyrics were vague for that exact reason: Hunter wished it to be open to interpretation, and the band followed along with this spirit of the music being whatever it could be to the fans. Jerry said once in an interview something along these lines: whatever they take from it in the moment, however they apply it to their lives, it's a personal thing and it's meant to be that way. Your perception of their artwork is yours and yours alone, and you can never let anyone take that from you. Be open to listening to what others have taken from the music (it's a grate way to get to know them) while knowing that your interpretation cannot be altered or changed. The only way it can be affected is in a positive way as you incorporate their experience into your own, creating a synergetic effect when you relisten or even reminisce about what you've heard. I hope that makes sense. That idea is a bit complex, you might want to read it again. Peace and love to everyone, and in particular, those who read all the way through this long, rambling comment about it all! My love is for real and will not fade away!

I drove from NYC to see this show. Hit a bottleneck getting into the parking lot. The sun was beating strong and we were in a stand still for over an hour. While waiting in this line of cars, suddenly a car smashed into me in the back. My car wasn't even running. Apparently some young woman was playing with her bf's stick shift car and the car lunged into my rear. Finally, parked the car, and proceeded to find some tickets. Bought 2 tickets off of some guy and proceeded to the stadium. Had already missed 1st set. Got to the stadium and presented our tickets. They were both counterfeit. I can honestly say I had a crummy day. I am so glad that eventually I got to see the show on video. Seeing Jerry wide awake and smiling makes me smile smile smile.

Thank you for sharing this. Today my brother is gone three years. He loved the GD and was a real Deadhead. I have some of his set lists, his Deadbase that he marked up, and his big collection of CDs. He had a GD tattoo. After he broke his neck in the Army Airborne, he couldn't dance any more but at concerts, he would dance his own way in his wheelchair. He was such a wonderful person, I could never explain adequately. But the GD and music in general was a huge part of his life and a big source of comfort and joy after his injury.

I’m 53 and just boarded the bus this past summer while on vacation. I was determined to listen to the Dead until it clicked. Boy did it ever. The Dead has made such a deep connection with my soul that it’s difficult to explain. Probably because I’m still processing it all. It truly has been a ‘Long Strange Trip’ getting here and I’m loving every minute of it. The best part of it all has been reading and listening to all of your stories. I almost feel sad for not being part of all of those moments. But I was young and naïve at that time. Better late than never I suppose. The Dead are a part of me now. As others have said I am now home. Peace and love to all of you, my friends. ☮️

How about the physical/mental cues Brent and Bobby were giving each other towards the end on backup vocals? They mess up the first one and Bobby just laughs (which is awesome in and of itself), then we see em screw it up a coupe more times, then you see bobby giving him directions, points to his left which in their secret code means "no, man go back to the other line" and brent hits it, gives a nod, saying "gotcha man, on the same page now" and they then tear it up.....this might not be that neat to anyone else.

Bobby shreds in this, so simple but so amazing. He compliments Garcia’s sound so well. They first riff is unbelievable

Jerry looks genuinely happy here. It’s amazing to watch. They were at the top of their game. Jerry was healthy and clean and they were playing tight. What a great time here to be alive.

I don't know how Mickey and Bill do their thing -- it's like free form and just blended in perfect non-sync. It's amazing watching them play together.

Ever since my uncles passing this song often reminds me of him. He unfortunately overdosed on drugs and was taken away too soon. RIP to my uncle glad I made the most out of the time spent with him. It’s never enough though, never forget to cherish the people closest to you.

My dad passed yesterday, and I came across this version for the first time. It's always going to hold a special place in my heart. The interaction between Brent and Jerry, and watching how they basically are telepathic, is incredibly beautiful. Them softly doing the "ooh, nothing's going to bring him back" repeatedly starting at 8:00 is so beautiful.
@ThatOneGuy-gb2tv7 жыл бұрын
sorry for your loss bro.... read your comment at 8:00 exactly and felt compelled to say something, as this song has a deep place in my heart as well. look up infamous stringdusters version it is probably the second best version they do it real justice.

I rarely listen to shows these days. Then out of the blue I jump back. I can pull up memories of what venue, where I was located in the crowd, the tempo, and clear visualization of the band, for any given song. It was real, and it was good.

I don't think Brent was underrated, he was pretty much the star of the show from mid 80's until he died. The band certainly didn't underrate him
@George_D7777 жыл бұрын
Underrated in the sense so many other musicians have been by the industry, definitely not by the band or fans. I think it was Jerry who said the band was real hungry for color, that Brent added that color they'd been craving to their sound. The incarnation of the band with Brent at the keys was them at their best for me, for many reasons, and despite many reasons.
