Jerry opened the door and looked down the hall with us lined up, "How many of you are there?" lol He led us all in, shaking our hands, where we sat on the floor and thanked him profusely. Instead, there was a place set up near Winterland where a huge over flow crowd could watch the show on several large screens with an array of speakers, get food, dance and party. It was $5 admission and the next best thing to being inside the theater, especially considering that I had flown 3000 miles to be there! I think I might take a try at identifying it. I was with the Hiaght-Ashbury Medical Clinic and I worked at a lot of their shows, at one point was giving the road manager's ex-wife a ride to shows as she was a patient of mine at my private practice. I think it was their attitude that they were playing for their family. Everyone could be part of the family. I was always amazed at the swinging door. I can't remember how many guys I knew in Marin who said they were personal friends of Bob Wier. One of them was a good personal friend of mine. I never believed in horning in, etc., but I shook Mickey Harts hand up at the summer camp where my girlfriend's kid was on the day of their kids show for the parents. Anyone could sign up their kid for Camp Winnarainbow as far as I knew. That feeling of genuine friendship with their larger audience was somehow communicated. This was a big part of their magic, I think. I'm going to add this, however, as I just remembered it. They could play all night and your ears would not be ringing afterwards because they had worked out their sound so technically clean and they had a non-assault way of rocking. I remember sometimes when I was able to get onto the floor during a slow time at an indoors show and I could feel Phil Lesh's bass waves penetrate me and touch my heart, literally. I think he knew he was doing that. It felt wonderful, too. Now that is the majic.

I was there and have a good story. One of the reasons Winterland was closing was because it was literally falling apart. I was behind the stage up in the balcony when a LARGE piece of the ceiling came down right at my feet; a huge chunk of plaster when Phil hit a real low bass note I guess. Well, I kinda freaked out a bit, yeah I was tripping and all BUT it was real. I said to some guy next to me " the ceiling is fallin' down!!!!". He said what? (the music was loud). I said "the f---------- ceiling is falling down!".. He laughed and passed me a joint and smiled and said "hey dude take a hit of this", thinking I was just imagining it. Later, I read that during a rehearsal at Winterland before the concert a large piece of plaster came smashing down right at the floor level where a bunch of people would be standing hours later. True story. Oh, and YES Bill Graham literally had breakfast served to 5,000 people after the concert!

How is it possible for 120 people to dislike this? I'm grateful Greatful Dead shows were recorded and filmed for posterity. I only got to see 10 shows between 89-94. For the last few weeks , I've been hooked on 77, and now arrive here at 78. It's just amazing the variation and the depth to which you can explore. Gone too soon Jerry; RIP, and thanks for the music.

Donna’s importance to the band in these massively important years is painfully underrated. She moved songs like Terrapin from American Standards to pure nirvana which manifested itself in the form of endless humanity and bliss. The reason why Deadheads love the music first and foremost is that it transports the soul. You could find yourself in the bleakest of circumstances and this music will transport you light years, galaxies away. It’s the closest to enlightened peace any man or woman could possibly find on this earth or any other.
@InService773 жыл бұрын
Uh...no. I agree with most of what you wrote except for the part about Donna. Don't get me wrong. I've been rooting for Donna as I listen through the Dead's catalogue since the 70's, but she rarely adds to the music. That being said, I am always happy to hear when she contributes something embellishing.
@jasonlambert55523 жыл бұрын
I've nothing but love for Donna, even when she's screaming because this band just GOES for it and chases the sound and it is clear as day they want to stop at all the sights on the roadmap of chord structure . Her son's group "BoomBox" is good stuff too!
@pattondiorama71363 жыл бұрын
I think Donna hits more clunkers than not but her best vocal is on Looks Like Rain from the Cow Palace 12-31-1976.

This was such a treat to listen to tonight. Though I was not there for this show, it brought back plenty of great memories with my friends from Lake Tahoe CA. My favorites "Fire on the Mountain" "Terrapin Station", "Wharf Rat", "St. Stephen" You can see that I am a true Jerry Garcia lover. Danced in my living room like I was there at the show. I grew up on the road with my thumb in the breeze as the world went speeding by until a kind soul would pull over and stop+Id hop in and travel as far as they were going. Everywhere I went the Dead would show up and play some familiar songs in a completely different way. My travels took me a few times to the corner of Post+Steiner in the Fillmore district of San Francisco back in the 70s and other places along the way and my old bus ‘Ramble on Rose’ sits up on my land after throwing a rod climbing one last hill and was towed with a chain up the bumpy dirt road at the Round Mountain Refuge in the high desert hills blending in with the land⛰✨✨✨

I’m watching this concert and I just thought about how the atmosphere in the concert hall was so beautiful and peaceful. How sweet that a balloon floats by Gerry and I’m thinking that Gerry is so happy he’s helped create this through the bands music. I’m wondering about being that free still exists among the people who became fans many years ago? So free and happy that you drop some LSD and have a trip so filled with love, joy, and the incredible things the music is doing to your head!! Thinking something like that leaves one very vulnerable to the world today. Myself, this comment is just a little walk down memory lane and express my love for the band and fondness for the fans.

The thing about watching the Dead in these videos is that even when you think “This isn’t their best performance…” you then say “Oh shut up!” to yourself when just a few minutes later you’re thinking “Oh my God,this is incredible!” as they hit one of their grooves again. And then again. And again.
