Gravitas Plus with Palki Sharma Upadhyay | India’s most popular University is cutting off students at 100%. Over 80% of DU seats have already been filled & admission has been closed in most colleges. Is this mad race even worth it? Whom does it help? Time to rethink college admissions.

As a student this made me very emotional. In a country with a large number of students, having no 3rd allotment, TOO MUCH EXPECTATION and sky rocketing cut-offs, suicide rates and depression among students are obvious. Take a look at NEET 2021 itself. Indian education system should change- which accepts more passionate students rather than students with high scores. There are lakhs of students in India who loses a chance to study in their dream colleges just because of the high cut-offs and elimination. No wonder why more and more students prefer going abroad for their higher studies. Shame on Indian Education System.

And how does one quantify passion? No doubt Indian education system needs reforms, but the new education policy is the first of many steps in the right direction. I hope Olympiads, summer projects and trainings too will soon find place in the curriculum and will be added as a component in the overall grading system.

@@ShivaGunwant Passion can be quantified by looking at the overall profile rather than simply looking at what you'd call a marksheet. Projects based on the subjects that one likes, Research on a personal level, extra-curriculars, achievements in the desiref field (competitions for instance) can be used to quantify passion. Not numerically though, it can be done subjectively. Afterall not everything needs numbers to represent itself well.

Yes bro , being a neet aspirant from general category, I can relate it too cut offs are sky rocketed mainly for general category, just look at the difference in expected cutoff of neet 2021 between general category and dumb reserve category students..there is only a way, Which i have decided just get a mbbs seat from india by hardwork and then do PG from foreign in medicine and then serve to foreign country which gives respect to talent and leave india on the shoulders of dumb minded doctors made from reservation.

@Mithilesh M Talking about fairness then the reservation should only be given to lower income groups. There are ultra rich people belonging to some SC/ST caste grabbing up seats they don't deserve. Honest general student looses an opportunity because they can't afford or born in a so called higher cast because of some historic hangover we are living in. Erase and end the caste and religion based discrimination. If you want reservation only your financial status and basic merit should be considered. This is not western/elite thinking, everyone needs fare chance and opportunity. Basic human rights.

The whole admission procedure is a big giant mess. I mean 100℅ cutoffs?. And what about brilliant students from boards like ICSE and CBSE who don't award marks on a platter. ICSE would never award 100℅ marks to any student. Which ultimately means toppers who do not belong to mediocre boards won't be getting admitted to the prestigious University. High time, du opts for ET based admissions.

Getting marks in class 12th has nothing to do with learning. I studied Hons. at LSR. It’s strategy and nothing else. Real learning starts when you enter college. Very unfortunate but true. Don’t listen to people who ask you to study for knowledge or learning. Do that after school. It’s really sad that I’m saying so because now I am studying Law and a truly study to learn. You have to be really strategic and cut throat in a country like India, where such a huge population is going after just 1 thing. I also wanted to be different and creative but here I am, trying to survive and aiming to make a living in the future. If you want to be creative, go out of the country if you can afford it. It was too expensive for me.

This is our country. Politicians fighting over religion, while students like me struggle to get in a medical college even after working their ass off for 3 years On top of that, if you are a general category student in a high scoring state, lord save you I would also like to point out how *entrance exams* never offer a holistic development. I was a person who loved reading books of all genres, outside the school curriculum, debating, poetry and participating in Model United Nations discussing world affairs but since last three years, I haven't done any of this. I lost all my social skills. I did enjoy studying science, but it robbed me of my other interests. I know writing a long paragraph won't change anything but I feel so frustrated, I decided to write this. I guess it's a crime to be an average hardworking student in this country. Edit- once again reservation shattered my dream of studying in IISER. I got 3.8k rank in IAT(IISER admission test) whearas cutoff for general is 3.5k. On other hand cutoffs for OBC is 6k and SC and ST goes upto 21k. I feel broken. So close yet so far. Waiting for my neet results now. Hope I get something there 2022 edit -> Finally a medico 😁 joined mbbs

Well I remember being disappointed by not getting in the college I wanted despite scoring 92but … having a good SOP, creative personal essays, achievements in extracurriculars such as sports and drama ( which my parents hated me for), and my experience waiting tables, and raw interviews got me into Cambridge. Here in India, extracurricular stuff gets you nowhere and now no one can debate the 100percent du college is better than… I mean we need citizens of the world not meticulously drafted excel sheets. Idc if the person reading this can’t go to Cambridge like I did ( fyi took a student loan) but remember this- do everything, try everything and work on your personality, understand changing perspectives, don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn how to learn things.

@JustAnotherLokiStan
@JustAnotherLokiStan 2 жыл бұрын
@maddy gamer hey, listen to me. Ivy league colleges aren't the only good colleges in the US. There are other great colleges too. If you wanna go abroad, select a college that has a 40-70% acceptance rate, you'll have a much better chance of getting in. Then you can apply to ivy league colleges as a transfer student, or you can complete your undergrad at the mid range college in the US and apply to ivy leagues for master's. And if you're not confident about that either, apply to colleges in Canada. There are plenty of great colleges there as well. Try to do a lot of research work while in college and you'll have a great chance of getting into an ivy league for your master's. Also, if you have any medals in individual activities like Olympiads, music etc, or if you've done any online coursework in high school or any individual activities at all, and you're able to spin an interesting narrative in the essays, you still have a chance of getting in. Please don't lose all hope!! I'm sure you'll find a path for yourself!❤️❤️ Also thanks for the well wishes ❤️❤️ I'll let you know in December if I get in 😀

@@hindurastra2700 Very valid point Sir. The science department has not been able to keep up with the International research standard. But it's simply not the fault of the students. When I was in DU, there weren't enough funds that were allocated to the science department for crucial research. On the other hand, the political scenario in DU was perfect to build a network for someone aiming for a career in politics. As far as 'contribution' is considered, I believe that is subjective and changes according to one's definition of the said word. I do consider a contribution towards arts/Commerce and business/literature/economics/activism/society/environmental sciences/liberal studies valid. You might beg to differ and that's completely fine.

@@hindurastra2700 @Golden India Sir, with all due respect I'll rest my case because I don't think you're willing to consider a different perspective. 1. I replied to the first comment that said they haven't seen anyone from DU achieve anything, I gave a few names which according to me is sufficient for the first statement. 2. You said that DU hasn't developed any medicine and technical product, aren't IITs and Med schools specifically for that. Also, the lack of funds in DU for research is a valid statement, if you still think that there isn't any sort of corruption and all the allocated funds go to the researchers then I hate to break your bubble but you are so wrong. Also, if you are naming Zuckerberg and are ignorant towards India's Ease of doing business ranking and the bureaucratic red tape then that's rather insensitive. 3. I don't know what according to you passes the criteria of 'valid contributions' Isn't Khushwant Singh's contribution towards literature enough? Isn't Shaheed Sukdev's Enactus cell's philanthrophy projects which made them win the first prize among the 70 odd participating country enough? Isn't the craft of Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkumar Rao, Amitabh bachchan enough? Madam Meena Upadhyay who did her research in genetic disorders surely her contribution isn't enough. And Late Shri Arun Jaitely well you've already dismissed his contributions. Even if we don't talk about the Notable alumni the Enactus Cells in DU work tirelessly to bring a significant change in the lives of the underprivileged. The students of Delhi University whom you've reduced to nothing but unproductive UPSC aspirants are more than that. DU ain't the happiest place and it surely isn't the best university but blaming the students who work hard in a country where their talent has no place and the system is rotten to the core, I don't think that's the way to go. We can at least be sympathetic towards this community, who are victims of the outdated education policy.

Watching this report is painful. This the one of the biggest hurdles India needs to handle for it to become a superpower. Our students are fantastic, but excruciatingly crushed by the gears of the system. Really hope that big, enormous changes will be made to the system so that our nation grows.

Yes, the internal assessments were biased, I'll tell you why. Actually, I passed my CBSE class 12th from Sunbeam school(a well-known group of schools) in 2021. Our marks were based on how we performed from class 10th to 12th. I had 80% marks in class 10th and class 11th was interrupted by the covid-19 pandemic so the exams didn't take place completely. And class 12th internal markings were totally biased because I didn't have very good relations with teachers as I always argued when they were wrong and when we were beaten(we had very psycho teachers) and that's the only reason I was awarded 59.5% and one thing will shock you and that's the story of my friends who cheated from my exam sheets they got 89% and 86% just because one of them has his mother teaching in that school and one of them took teachers in a popular restaurant for a pizza party and ransomed him nearly 5000 rupees(I'll not disclose their names but I had their recordings but unfortunately they got misplaced, but I can get it out of their mouth again). And it's not just only 2 boys most of the students who licked teachers' assess got full marks, that is how this system works, believe me, my friend doesn't even know fundamental science, English or anything to get that many marks but still this fucking loophole in this system sucks. I know how it feels, I'm not sad cuz' i didn't get numbers but I'm not from such a rich family to spend unnecessary money, so I wanted to get into a government college for higher studies but with numbers such as that no government college would take me in. Fed up from this wicked system I took admission to a private college but not in a course I wanted to opt but for any study, to raise concern against this wicked system through filmmaking after my graduation.

Would you like to join hands? I have the same concern and issues. I have excellent scripts but I don't have a good video to post it on KZbin.

There is the need of colleges like DU in every state of India. DU is not like a black hole so that we can put as many students as we want. That's why cut offs there are always skyrocketing.

Problem is students and their parents, there are many good colleges and Universities across all over India but they always prefer which University has more fame instead of education.
