It is normal in Turkey. It has happened before. I remember being on a business trip in Ankara in the early 2000s. Tried to take 50 Euro into town for shopping. With only the biggest bills, this amoubt was still an almost 3 cm thick bundle of bills. Then they did a currency reform and struck off loads of zeros and put the lira back on track. I hope it is the end of Erdogan. But who knows what will come after him.

The Russian Ruble experienced a worse fall after being sanctioned by the West but Putin managed to stabilize it after a while. Turkey will recover from this. Erdogan just needs to figure out the real cause of this mess and sort it out. The first thing he should do is get better advisors.

Turkey may face knee jerk reaction. But in the long, I think it wii survive. If I am right, it has little dependent on FDI, but its banks may suffer in the short term. The longer term, if Turkey can remain calm, it will benefit from tourism especially from Eastern countries. In fact its products could offer attractive prices due to exchange value. And in the last resort the situation will push Turkey towards Russia. So I think western effort to induce the people & army to go against Erdogan could be counter productive.

The more religious extremism stoked by Erdogan spreads in Turkey, the more Turkey's tourism will suffer with law and order worsening uncontrollably, with multiple western countries issuing travel advisories at some point in time. Russia can not and will save Turkey economically as Russia itself has to pull up its socks on that front and Turkey will be an affront and a liability for Russia- China can but it will exact its pound of flesh making Erdogan and the Turkish people feel the heat. At some point, there will be exodus of educated Turkish professionals from Turkey with the country spiraling into a slippery slope if things continue to degenerate. Russia has been a superpower for quite some time now- financially shaken but still a military superpower with huge base and control on global military technology trade and gargantuan mineral reserves. Turkey is just an aspiring middle power. Turkey will not survive what Russia has managed to wade through.
