Actually, you are drawing the wrong conclusions. Abrams may be no good, but that does not make Russian tanks any better. Russia ain't winning the war. HIMARS, ATACMS, etc. are still kicking butt. US has not even allowed the use of US weapons inside Russian territory on the East. Most of Russian air defenses are blown up in Crimea. Abrams were not something US gave willingly. They were given because Germany wanted US to give Abrams.

In fact, the western weapons are so effective that US has restricted their use and that is why Russia has some advances in the East. This war is pretty much managed by the west. Russia can only get what the West will allow. Russia is not allowed to make advances in South and Kharkiv region.

And those weapons did protect Ukraine. Russia should be thankful that the US did not allow Ukraine to strike Russian territory with US weapons. The war would not have lasted this long. Crimea is hammered regularly and Russia is totally helpless there.

The m1 tank,challenger and leopard tanks where designed for combined arms maneuver warfare in which they are a component to a larger force.the m1 was designed not for a WW1 static line of contact but rather working with infantry artillery and airpower to decisively assault and destroy the enemy.

The price tag of these junk crafts of close to 5 Mio dollar per vehicle is hilarious. We once calculated on available data that an average abrams a1 materials, machining and assembly cost including gasturbine could not much exceed 1.75 mio dollar. Its the typicall price up for US weaponry for customers, +200%. The reliability is abyssmal btw, terrible mpg, a giant target with outdated armor and without modern era systems, extreme heat signature.

Soviet tank design philosophy came out of learning of the winning side of WW2. For some bizarre reason Western tank philosophy abandoned what worked for them in WW2 (I.e. cheap, reliable, mass-produced above average medium tanks like the Sheeman), and adopted the German model, in creating evermore expensive and heavy wonder weapons, with horrendous logistic footprints. They probably forgot that the Germans lost the war taking that approach. The Ukarinian war vindicated the Soviet armour design philosophy as the right one.

First of all, the standard armor available for the Abrams used by the American forces, was removed before they were shipped for Ukraine. The American leadership decided that in order to avoid for that special armor to be searched by the Russians, after being captured. As result, what was received by Ukraine was a second-grade junk, labeled as "armor". This was well known since before they were delivered. Ukraine had the chance to refuse the Abrams for this reason, and to make a big public statement to explain their rejection, and they didn't. The average American like to think of the Abrams as an American creation. The truth is that back to the late 1960's, the Germans and the Americans were in a joint project to design a common tank. Finally, they departed to separate paths. The Germans ended with their Leopard II, the Americans with their Abrams. As long the project was common, most of the design was German. Even you do not think about this, the special armor of the Abrams is actually a British idea and design, offered by them to the American friend. The cannon of the Abrams was designed and is made in Germany. So, what is American there... That stupid engine guzzling fuel like a drunkard who was starved of hard liquor for a while. Also, the electronics for various controls, orientation and detection. They may had removed that special electronic equipment, when they shipped them to Ukraine, to don't end in Russian hands.

Two major factors: First: Glory-seeking Russian Officers will likely sacrifice an entire company to get an Abrams kill. Second: Export Abrams tanks are a VERY different beast compared to A PROPER M1A2. Chobham armour, while relatively dated 1960's technology at this point, is still not properly understood by Russia, as the US/UK have not exported it. The Soviets and Russians have still never designed a proper warhead to counter it. Meanwhile Soviets/Russia went with the cheaper and lighter approach of ERA bricks that are useless against 90s-era NATO antitank missiles with tandem charges, hence the catastrophic turret toss footages.

The same argument could be said of the T72. For years the results of M1 against Iraqi T72s were promoted all over media and used as evidence of the superiority of it's technology, design etc, and how T72s were junk, cold war relics serving only as moving tin can targets. I guess finally they are meeting Russian crews driving still the T72s, on a battlefield the M1 was originally designed/optimised for and things started to look quite different.

Abrams were never good. They always had good advertising, like, say, American planes now, but they had good support, especially from the air, which is non-existent in Ukraine. The Russians are not better either, only nobody makes such a big deal about them and the Russians are aware that there is no best or worst tank, they use tactics like in WW II, the more tanks the better and the tactics succeed.

Russia certainly is not a superpower because it is fighting a weak war and is not winning. Abrams was not US choice to give to Ukraine. HIMARS and ATACMS have no Russian solution. Not to mention these weapons are still watered down versions of what US would use. America has imposed restrictions on where Ukraine can use US weapons. Otherwise, Ukraine will take out Russia's eastern logistics centers located inside Russia.
