I used to build models of everything from tanks to sportscars, and larger balsa models. Your siphon sprayer is a must for super thin and super thick mixtures for detail and texturing surfaces. I have found that I have more control with the siphon systems. They're far easier to maintain as well.

I use both, like you said, depending on the project. I have done some larger signage using the siphon for the big color and switching the the gravity feed for the detail work.

I work in glass and use the air brush for spraying glass enamels. I have only recently introduced air brush into my work. I just got a gravity feed and am trying to get use to it. My old brush which I have had for about 40 years is a badger siphon feed. I liked the syphon because I could keep the colors in the jars. It also seemed easier to transition to different colors. I plan on working more with the gravity airbrush and I'm anxious to see how easy color changes are. Working with glass enamels is very different that with other mediums because colors change a lot after firing. Colors can vary a lot in density also. I look forward to more videos about fine tuning the air brush medium and air controls as well as the differences in needles and tips.

I just bought a siphon fed airbrush on the cheap to get started with priming minis. Figured it would be a simple priming/base coating rig for speed painting. Now I realize I can airbrush tee shirts to practice using it. Once I get a bit more finesse, I'll grab the gravity fed for more detail work.

personally for the detail airbrush I use a hybrid'ish setup.... I have a paasche VL series that is the syphon Feed version but i use it with the cup attachment for 90% of the work, its most of the benefits of the gravity feed cup (minus vertical angles) as it goes for quick color changes, but offers up jars as a quick swap out for larger coverage areas. The primary reason I use this brush is simply that it is the one I got some 25+ years ago and learned how to do airbrushing on, and i am just the most conferrable using it, I have about 30 airbrushes but the good'ol VL series is always the go to brush for me. With the numbers of hours i have on it, it feels the best in my hand and I know exactly how the spray pattern will fall. As for use, I have used it on basically everything, from Automotive (cars, bikes, boats, and even an airplane once) to models, paper, t-shirts, miniatures, props, Wood (using stains) and lots of random custom applications like PC's and gaming consoles, tool boxes, shoes, motocross helmets, murals, etc.... (basically any time a friend says hey can you paint this for me and make it look cool) Both large scale applications and small scale. However I do use a combination of the fine airbrush and larger HVLP airbrush systems for the larger coverage areas and solid colors then the detail brush for everything in between, On large stuff I do mainly automotive paints (regardless of application unless there are chemical reactions) with the primer, solid color passes, and masking sections with the HVLP, Switch to the detail brush to make it pretty, and follow up with the hvlp again for the clear coat passes. Again on large areas i use 3 different HVLP brushes as well, (Small medium, and large) depending on the area that needs covered, i.e. small one for helmets, the medium for cars, Big one for walls. But on smaller items and art pieces i use just the detail brush with all kinds of different paints and stains as the big brushes take longer to clean than the time saved with the extra coverage they provide.

I have siphon feed because when I started that's all there was. I now use gravity feed because that's what I favor now. However I still love my H model, a siphon feed, I favor for clear coats. I own several models, I keep different size needles in them. I have a personal color code on the air stem (heat shrink) for the size identity. I model in 1:87 to 1:18 scales, bicycle parts & my car nose's measles (chipped paint). Different paint mediums also require different minimum needle sizes.

Similar to you, I almost always use my gravity-feed Olympos Microns but also have a couple of old Paasche VL's from my t-shirt hosing days that I use for larger areas as well as pearl & metallic paints. I used to be primarily a t-shirt artist but now I paint on most anything---computer cases and laptops, all manner of automotive painting, illustration board for photo-realistim, skate board decks, Vinyl store front awnings, wall murals, silk neckties, paper cards and envelopes--my user thumbnail to the left is on a 5" x 7" envelope, and still the occasional t-shirt. But my favorite surface to airbrush on is leather jackets--technically it's considered a fabric but you can also use automotive techniques like pin striping, marbleizing, and gold leaf work.

Siphon cups alleviate some of the issues with the bottles, but still won't compete with all of the benefits of the gravity fed. However, you can get as close to the surface. Rotating the cup gives you more angles when doing detailed work, but not as many as the gravity fed. Like you, I have both. Unlike you, I'm getting back into it for modelling after a long hiatus, so your videos are great reminders and have tips I didn't get before the days of the internet (yes it's been that long 👀). The gravity fed I bought recently goes to a much smaller tip size than my siphon fed, which is another thing that makes it better for fine details. So, thanks for your tips from someone returning to airbrushing!!!!! Used to do simple t-shirts too, but don't think I'll get back into that. Not enough time.

I primarily build models and do RC. I use siphon for large scale painting of models or when needing more coverage for base coats and primer. I use gravity for more mobility close up and for finer control when shading or camouflage paint schemes. I like and use both. I have a single action siphon, two dual action siphon and one gravity fed airbrush. Two are Badger and two are cheap Chinese. I bought name brand first and added the two Chinese ones after hearing and seeing good reviews. Buying an Iwata next and will probably stop there. I hate to say it but I wish I would have found out about the Chinese ones earlier on. They work well and I like shooting experimental paints through them before putting through my Badgers. For example craft acrylics to make sure they clean up well. Not that I use craft acrylics often but I have on occasion for ground cover of other uses. Rarely if ever touch a spray can anymore. Airbrushing is addictive and fun. Love your videos by the way. Great content.

When painting small objects or painting in a quick episode I often use a color cup made for the siphon feed like my Badger 155 Anthem. I only use a jar if painting a large object or painting for a longer duration. You didn't show a color cup being used on siphon feed. I only have 2 siphon feed airbrushes and I want to get a gravity feed one. The Harbor Freight gravity feed has been featured in several videos and I've only heard good things about it. My Badger Anthem has a .5mm needle and nozzle and the old Harbor Freight Chinese airbrush (siphon feed also) has a .3mm needle & nozzle. Cheers from eastern TN

Thank you! Gravity feed for me.....but not one of the side feed😂 I got a great deal on a grex pistol grip side bowl gravity feed and compressor a few years ago. The gun sprayed OK, but very difficult to clean and thinner paint viscosity is mandatory. I’ve now got some Iwata hp-cs, wow, what a difference. Easy clean/color change and very forgiving to paint viscosity😎

Great question, they should be reasonably tight when you first fit them to your airbrush, giving it a slight twist helps to lock it in . Hope that helps , I remember using elastic bands to hold mine on when they got loose years ago, when I used to use siphon feed brushes . I would ask some tshirt artists as they would have a solution for you as they use siphon brushes more than I do . 👍🏻

Gr8 vid mate. I was thinking with the suction airbrush, y can't U put a clunk on the end of the pipe. I fly RC planes and we have a heavy connection at the end of the pipe. So doesn't matter if you're flying upside down, the pipe is always in the fuel. You said with the suction that you have to keep it level, with a metal clunk, U could nearly upside down. You just have to worry about your breather hole. Cheers Graham

I use a different Iwata airbrush that is the HP SBS Eclipse that is a side feed. But you can also use a gravity feed AND you can also use a siphon feed bottle as well as a conventional side feed color cup. Very versatile, and there is never an obstruction above the body of the airbrush blocking your view.

I like to use my iwata eclipse siphon for my primers or larger base coats think 1/72 B-52 or 1/48 B-17 B-24 . 1/48 F-15,16,18,22. I like to use my iwata hp suction 1/72 1/48 1/35 fighters and armor. There are times I mix it up. I also use my eclipse On hard or small areas of automotive painting. I also use badger 150 DA with multiple needles thaworks great. With its fine needle is in the gun its fine detail work can be outstanding. But like you're self everything everything is cleaned. If haven't used them for awhile I'll clean and lube them anyways. Great video! Can I get some information on compressors? I've had an Iwata product for almost 14 years but very little time with it due to change in living conditions over that time frame. It doesn't seem to be producing the air pressure it used to when it was new. I'm currently getting around 20-25 psi depending on needle size. I have the Iwata Smart Jet Compressor. With the one I have I can set the Air Pressure to 30psi but as soon as I start using the airbrush it drops to 22psi and stays at that pressure. This seems to happen no matter what airbrush I use (different Nozzle Sizes) When using the Createx High Gloss Black (no reducer) I get a lot of spattering. Is that because of not enough air presser for the nozzle size, (3.5mm) Thank you for your quick response another reason I really enjoy your channel! God Bless

Yep , you won’t be disappointed the IS975 is a fantastic compressor. In regards to your spattering issue I would say it’s because you are not thinning the paint , give the ‘high performance Createx reducer ‘ a go and thin out the black and it should go through fine even at lower pressures. I paint with my microns at 22psi, granted they have finer needle / nozzle setups but I just thin the paint out and it flows through perfectly . 👍🏻

I create 3D terrain for miniature gaming. I have two airbrush, for large buildings and priming I use the siphon one. For the regular miniatures, I used gravity. I’m new to all this, so I don’t have a base to compare. The airflow is weaker on the siphon feed, not sure if that is normal. My current compressor is a testor and I don’t have the ability to change the pressure. I will be getting a better setup once my channel has product to advertise and store filled with more items.

So I've never airbrushed before. Bought a siphon feed airbrush yesterday. I've got it all hooked up, and it seems like, whenever I activate it, it just starts bubbling in the paint and nothing sprays out. What am I doing wrong??

I'm going to follow that video and try cleaning the whole thing to see if that fixes it. It's my son's, and he tried setting it up and using it, couldn't get it to work, and then asked for my help. No telling what exactly he did to it before I was involved lol..

It seems a lot of people believe that squirting airbrush cleaner in through the needle chuck is a good idea. If you stop and think about how an airbrush is made, there is a big open space between the chucking assembly and the actual area paint flows in. When you do this you are squirting cleaner into the air valve which can cause the valve to stick. If you are getting paint back into the trigger/air valve area it is because the needle packing/bearing is worn, damaged or out of adjustment and needs to be fixed. In 50 years of using airbrushes, I have Never seen any airbrush manufacturer recommend squirting cleaner through the chucking assemble as part of a cleaning routine.
