I think when LC Mormont told Tyrion that Thorne had to be the trainer because he was a knight, he wasn't expressing a respect for the title, so much as saying, "we have to use Thorne this way, because he's literally the only person we have (besides myself) who's a trained fighter, who we don't have ranging. We're that short on people. Please, please help us."

From an old interview with GRRM “ Tyrion is the villain of course “ I think this was faintly pursued in the show with his increasingly bad decisions and advice and of course he was the one that talked Jon Snow into murdering Dani, then banishing him. I expect this will be more pronounced in the books as his hatred for his remaining family will color his advice to Dani, bending her to destroy KL. I love doing re-reads to remind me how much more complex and morally grey his character is then the show portrayed.

I can sort of imagine what G.R.R Martin might have been planning for Tyrion before the show annihilated his character. When Tyrion arrived in Meereen he was in a drunk and hopeless state. Daegery was basically his last hope. I think the idea for Tyrion was that he was just so desperate and broken emotionally that he just became overwhelmed by Daegeny's perceived power and divinity and that it seriously fucked with his head, like someone joining a cult. That would have be a cool fucking Tyrion. Someone who is just as smart and witty and tactically brilliant as the old Tyrion, except much more emotional and unpredictable. Instead of all the cynicism and skepticism, just fanatical belief and murderous focus. And Tyrion should have been the one to go mad. He should have been the one constantly whispering in Daeney's ear to take things further, to be that much more merciless and brutal in order to survive. He should have been urging Daegery to take revenge on Cercei and on the people of King's Landing. This was Tyrion's obsession, not Daegery. That's why it all felt so unnatural when Daegney burned down the city. It wasn't her city, it meant nothing to her.

Alliser Thorne kind of reminds me of a way harsher and more gritty Snape. I always felt like his techniques are just not effective in teaching anybody. At first, I thought maybe he wanted to bring the recruits together in like a mutual hatred for him type of way lol. I now think he is just bitter and hateful and just thinks he is wasted upon the wall.

The giant made of stone is likely a reference to Petyr Baelish. Although his personal sigil is the mockingbird, House Baelish uses the head of the Titan of Braavos- a stone giant. The vision is mostly about events in King's Landing prior to the War of the 5 Kings and at that time Baelish was definitely keeping an eye on Sansa and Arya. We often forget that Petyr is of Braavosi descent. Perhaps he "helped" Ned find Syrio, First Sword of Braavos. And of course, there is nothing but darkness inside Petyr, although he hides it behind a mask (or visor).

I just realized something as I watched this video: Gray and her guest mention that there are no knights in the north because they keep the Old Gods, but what about Jorah Mormont? He's of the North (Bear Island) and was knighted by King Robert. Did he convert to the faith of the Seven, which allowed him to become an anointed Knight?
@ratgirl342 жыл бұрын
I was thinking similarly, in my head I keep thinking: of course they have knights. But I can’t think of anyone other than Jorah who uses Ser, besides men on the wall.

I thought the shadow made of stone was Littlefinger. His actions have altered the fates of everyone in the story and his family's original symbol is the titan of Bravos whose depicted in a stone statue.

@sneh99924 жыл бұрын
@grayarea the discussion at the beginning about Alliser being the trainer, it's not a north thing, it's a world thing. this is a world in which your birth, status and titles are the most imp things and shadow what or who you're as person or even experience. it's why Royce kid got command of the ranging north of the wall in the prologue despite it being his first ranging and Will and Gared being veterans, it's why Alliser has a position that goes well with his status and title, it's partially why Jon's pissed when he assigned a position as steward and so on. Dany is different because all her title hollowed out and didn't really matter all her life and Stannis is just different (an exception in this world)

I always thought passing beneath the shadow was a reference to Asshai by the Shadow. Asshai is in the far east, it's in the Shadowlands (a mountain range) and Quaithe is from there. To go west, you must go east.

I like the theory of "passing beneath the shadow" to mean Dany having to accept Tyrion's council. I hadn't considered that. I thought the passage could mean one of two things. One- it alludes to her having to return to Vaes Dothrak to fulfill the 'stallion who mounts the world' prophecy. In AGOT, as she's traveling to the Western market in Vaes Dothrak, she makes the following observation: "When the wind blew, she could smell the rich scents of grass and earth. As her liter passed beneath the stolen monuments, she went from SUNLIGHT TO SHADOW AND BACK AGAIN". That literally describes her passing beneath a shadow and touching light afterward. Second, and more tinfoil- Daenerys having to go to Dorne upon returning to Westeros. Everyone, like Dany, thinks Quaithe meant Asshai when telling Dany to pass beneath the shadow because everyone (like Dany) assumes Quaithe is a shadow binder. But Asshai isn't the only place in ASOIAF associated with a region called the shadow. Against the walls of Sunspear sits a town called 'the Shadow City'. The town is built like a maze, but there exists the Threefold Gate, which allows direct passage through the city to the Old Palace of Sunspear. The Old Palace includes the Tower of the Sun. The sun produces light. So perhaps Quaithe meant Dany will go to Dorne, and that she'll pass through the Shadow City to go to Sunspear/the Tower of the sun. Where of course she'll meet with Prince Doran, who will give her "truth" about who she really is.

Arya does have a connection to the Mountain though. It's the Mountain who initially destroys the Riverlands that Arya sees firsthand. It's the Mountain's Men who kidnap and traffick and enslave Arya, Gendry, Hot Pie and others to Harrenhal where the Mountain was holding for Tywin. Many of the people on Arya's list are his men, especially when she's in Harrenhal. The Mountain is also on her list specifically even though she's never interacted with him and he's never personally effected her life in the way Joffrey or Cersei have, and that's because she knows who is responsible for so much suffering in the Riverlands and Harrenhal specifically. So while she's not interacting with him face to face, she was still deeply effected by him and deems him personally responsible for all of that plight. Also I don't view Bran's vision as just depicting present aspects of the story as he sees Jon's dead body getting colder and colder, also I'm not sure what secrets Arya is holding tightly to her chest at the time of the Trident incident, except the fact that she chased Nymeria away but that's hardly a secret, so who is to say that Arya and possibly Sansa won't come across Robert Strong in the future of the books also? So yeah, I still think that guy in the vision is the Mountain as Robert Strong and not Tyrion. To me it just adds up too well to not be Robert Strong.

Man, I really want to see a good Jon and Tyrion reunion. I'm hesitant to get my hopes up with Tyrion's trajectory now though. I think his story arc is becoming a villain, even though I absolutely adore him and dont want it to go that way.
@oliviawilliams62044 жыл бұрын
He always was on that way, Martin called him a villain after the release of Clash of Kings, that’s book 2. It’s subtle, and lot of people kinda buy on Tyrion view of himself, buy his own self hype, I know I did it too. He’s funny charming witty. But he hide his ow flaws even to himself. Like he’s not as clever as he thinks he is. Take his tenure as Hand in Clash, he spend his time worrying about Pycelle and Cersei, the two more inept players of the game while Varys and Littlefingers are running circles around him and he don’t see it.
@justineharper33464 жыл бұрын

George is a BIG football fan, the NY Giants is his favorite team and Tyrion is his favorite character. Sometimes he connects his giants to the NYG, like Wun Wun vs Ser Patrek of Kings Mountain whose sigil matches the Dallas Cowboys. Could George's Tyrion/giant comparison be just shining a spotlight on the author's own personal feelings for Tyrion early in the series?
@oliviawilliams62044 жыл бұрын
Reminds me I guess you know that but someone reading the comments might not. That Ser Patrick was put in the books because George lost a bet with a friend who was a Dallas Cowboy Fan, and he had to put him in the books.... so George had a Giant kill him hahaha

This is a long shot, but could Skahaz make a fool of Tyrion by getting Tyrion to try and execute Hizdahr for a crime he didn't commit? This would directly parallel Tyrion's own experience of being tried/facing execution for a crime he didn't commit, so I like it in that way. Furthermore, Skahaz has already started the process of systematically eliminating a political rival by making a fool of Ser Barristan and getting him to imprison Hizdahr and stage a coup, so maybe he'll use Tyrion to execute Hizdahr and finish the process🤷♀️.

Valkanna .Nublet that is true, very little common man seem to get any position of authority before Jon take over as Lord Commender. It seem to be supposed to be a meritocracy, but really was not. Is Tyrion the giant that Sansa slays in a castle made of snow? Not Littlefinger...?
@cheriealicent99814 жыл бұрын
Nah it makes too much sense for it not to be LF. -LF's grandfather sigil was a giant - the quote "a small man that casts a large shadow" can very easily apply to LF - he's a physically small man that came from humble beginning, that rose high & had a huge effect on Westeros (ie therefore referring to the huge shadow) -"Savage" is what is used to describe the giant- & that's basically what I describe LF's actions as - someone who isn't afraid to committ cruel & ruthless actions for his own goals. - If LF is the giant & I'm that certain of it, then the castle of snow I'm betting is WF. First of all, the castle is literally called winter-fell. The North has the most acossiations with snow & winter in the series. And Sansa herself said she felt stronger within the walls of Winterfell so it's a fitting place for the demise of LF who tried to destroy the Starks.

I'm curious about what might happen if fAegon nullifies the vows of all the people that were sentenced to the wall... I somehow don't think that Thorne and the other Targaryen-loyalists will stay at the wall. Only the Wildlings will be left for the defense.

The thing about Alliser is that imo he just thinks training those (what he thinks are) useless boys to be fighters is pointless. It also makes him the strongest among those younger boys, like a bully would want to be. The fact that Jon is almost equal to him, fighting wise, is a tragedy for him. The only control he had over his life at the wall by bullying others is at risk to be over now that Jon is there so he's pissed off.
