Wow. My wife came down and said there was no hot water. I watched a few of your videos and finally got around to this one. It was the exact problem, a little carbon on the cad cell. I will call my furnace guy tomorrow, but I am avoiding an emergency call tonight. Thank you!

Matt C. from Portland, OR Sir, I thank you. I consider myself handy, but no expert. I had flame, I have oil, but the furnace kept timing out. I checked the cad sensor, looked good, but cleaned it anyway. Still kept timing out. I let the furnace cool down for awhile (important) and reached my hand down in there and realized that some of the fire proof packing had fallen down into the burn hole, thus blocking the cad sensor from seeing the flame. Cleaned that out, and now running great. Your video didn’t offer up that suggestion (you may want to include in the future), but I would have never thought of that without your whole explanation.

You also saved me a service call, about $135 for me. It ran out, I filled with diesel, pressed the reset twice which led to lockout mode. Learned how to bleed the system, and this video explained why I shouldn't reset it again, and how to get it out of lockout mode, and after bleeding the system I got the heat working again. Yes!!! I finally learned more about these Honeywell devices and how they work, and how to get the system working again. A Big Thanks!

Hey Grayfurnaceman, this isn't about how much money you saved me... but, more about the respect I have for you sharing your time & knowledge - Thank you!FYI - I have one cousin, one nephew, and one brother-in-law all making a living in the hvac trades... none of which either could or would help me diagnose issues with my ~40 year old, forced-air, oil burner furnace. It's finally working great and I owe it all to your educational "how to" trouble-shooting Video's.After working through the frustrations of learning the safe operational workings of the oil fired burner, I now know why the above mentioned relatives wanted nothing to do with my furnace. By the way, and thanks to you, I have learned these heat units are simple and reliable if you properly maintain and service them at correct intervals.In closing, I love my "Frankin-Furnace" so named because of all the borrowed parts, it's running great because of what I learned from you.B.

I want to thank you for saving me $100, plus having heat again. My fuel oil tank ran out, my fuel man refilled it, but I knew that I'd have to bleed the pump of air, something I've done before. I hit the reset from the modern electronic version of the cad cell you described. Needed to hit reset twice because all the air wasn't out, then nothing, I was locked out. Found your video, held the reset for 45 seconds and wow! pump began running, Bled just a little more out and had a flame. Now everything is fine. Can't thank you enough.

Thanks for the trick about resetting from restricted mode. I had changed my oil filter last night and forgot to bleed the air out. Later on when the boiler didn't start, I bled the filter and tried to bleed the air at the burner, but I had hit the reset too many times. Finally, at 3am I found your video and now I have heat. You seem like the man for this. I recently replaced a Coleman furnace that was about 25 years old with a much newer miller with a Beckett af15 burner assembly. The furnace worked in the house it was removed from. After installing it in my mobile home it fires instantly when the motor starts, stays fired for half a second then flame goes out and the motor still runs till the timeout. the happens each time it is reset. This is supposed to be a delay start. My tank is full with a new filter installed coming off it. I ran about a gallon of oil out the bleeder with no air for the last half of it. The cad eye tests good. The cad relay on this unit has 4 wires aside form the cad cell wires. Black, white, orange and purple. The clean cut valve is wired with the burner motor on the orange wire . The ignition is wired separately on the purple wire. I am reasoning that the valve is receiving power whenever the motor is running and some sort of delay was built into the vale which is malfunctioning.

so when I go down to check my boiler after watching your video I do what you say. I'd been using the end of a broom stick to reach the red button on the control panel to push it. I had the cover off and bumped the side of the Beckett burner and notice it lighted without me pushing the red button. I said to myself "Self check the ground" on the control panel. I notice that I could wiggle the control panel which should have been screwed down good to complete the ground. My boiler guy was here a couple weeks ago to clean it and apparently forgot to screw down the control panel screw tight. So I did and sure as shit that was the problem. After 5 days of no heat and messing with the control panel reset to light the burner when we needed hot water. The dayum thing was fixed!!! When dealing with electrical stuff always check the power and ground first. I spent around $65 on a new control box and shipping now I have and extra part that's not needed.

This was an excellent video. I was wondering how to test flame detectors and it appears a simple multi-tester will do the job. I live in a rural area in Colorado where oil heat is not common. As such I am unable to find anyone to work on mine. Been doing most of the work ( with help of a good chimney sweep at one point) for the last fifteen years. Was able to have the bottom of the boiler relined about twelve years ago. How often should this be done?

I have a rheem lowboy with Beckett AFG. been acting up or tripping out lol! I replaced cad cell & nozzle, cleaned & adjusted electrodes but now must hit reset-sometimes 4-5x's to start motor then fires & runs for a period of time5min, 20 min, even 40 min today but shut off just 2 degrees shy of thermostat. I've tried 2 BN white rodgers 668-401 relays but they never do "anything"? so I put the old one back on to at least get er going again? I believe the fan/line limit switch on stack is working correctly too.

Really good video Grayfurnaceman. I have the more complicated primary control with the lockout safety feature. After watching this great video, Im convinced my issue is my Beckett clean cut fuel pump. I've bled the fuel from the port. I've cleaned the filter. Still wont go. I've unscrewed the high pressure fuel line from the burner and ran it to see if fuel was going through the pump and to the burner and nothing comes out! Do you have a video on something like this? Or any tips? I'm definitely subscribing to your channel.

hello Furnaceman, I have a R784B honey well 3 strikes your out Cad cell relay, it has the wiring for the oil delay solenoid, I really like these relays because they shut off the ignition once the flame is established which saves the ignition transformer from wearing out. I am up north in Victoria BC, I am a oil burner tech. My question is can I replace my Beckett oil delay fuel pump with a Dan Foss 3450 fuel pump that does not have a oil delay solinoid, I find a lot of the newer fuel pumps tend to leak from the shaft seal. The Dan foss pump shaft seals are bullet proof I never have problems with them. it seams like the Beckett fuel pump seals almost always leak after the warranty runs out or sometimes when they are 2 or 3 years old. I know our heating fuel is much different than 10-12 years ago. thanks for the video. Steve

So currently Because it is such an old Wayne burner on my Miller MOC 100 Do you think it would benefit from one of those external timed solenoid valves? My Rudd oil furnace will run and run and run and has gotten up to 99F in my house if I don't catch it and turn off the main switch. The thermstat has been replaced so that is not it. A friend moved some wires that were attached to the little fuse box on the opposite side of the wall where thermostat is mounted and the furnace went off. What is that little fuse box for and do you think if I just replace those wires it will turn off when it reaches temp? Need help. Had a flood in the basement with a new furnace, so I shut off the emergency switch to the furnace. I waited for the basement to dry for a couple days and then turned the switch back on. When I checked the furnace there was no light at all. I turned the circuit breaker off then on. My indicator light is now blinking (I assume it's in restricted mode). I tried to bleed the lines, but there's only a slow drip of oil. I held the reset button for 45 seconds. I can hear something trying to happen, but it goes back to blinking (restricted mode?). Where do I go from here?

Steve LaFever If the water was up to the level of the cad cell relay, the relay, the cad cell and probably the burner motor must be replaced. Also if the blower motor was wet, it will probably have to be replaced. Hope this helps. GFM

@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 8 жыл бұрын
When the problem is repaired, you will need to check to see if there is a level of oil in the combustion chamber. If you can get a stick or wire into the inspection hole to the bottom of the chamber, and do not find a level, you can fire the unit. You will need a fire extinguisher just in case. Start the burner. When it lights, shut it off. It should stay burning the oil in the chamber. Just let it burn out. Do not open the inspection door. If it starts to get out of control, use the fire extinguisher. When it burns out, you should be able to operated the appliance normally. GFM

HEY FURNCEMAN!!! Great video!! So on my oil burner/boiler I have that last relay with the red button and green light that locks out if pressed more than once. What happened to me was that I let my oil run out and my burner went off. The oil man refilled the tank but didnt restart the system. (I'll deal with him later). Now it wont go on. I changed the filter, but the motor isn't running. The green light is blinking and I realize that its on lockout mode. Once I hold it for 45 seconds and it DOESNT fire back up, is the motor bad??

grayfurnaceman Ok when I got home last nite, I unlocked the relay by holding it for 45 seconds and it started back up. BUT it stayed on for 10 seconds and went back off. I tried to bleed it, but no oil was coming out at all. Its a fairly new oil burner/boiler. I opened up the small red oil tank where I had just replaced the filter that morning, and there was no oil inside of it. That was strange. I recently got my tank filled with 100 gallons of oil. But b4 the refill it had ran out COMPLETELY!! Is it possible that the oil lines may be clogged not allowing the new oil to flow through?? Or is it my pump? Or is it the psi (which doesn't move from 0 when the motor is restarted)?? Please help!!

First, are you sure the flame is coming on? Is the cad cell dirty? You can jumper out the cad cell if you short the terminals for the cad cell after the burner has started. It will not work if you short it before the burner comes on. And I am sure you know, watch it closely. GFM

None of this is recommended as there is now no safety on the burner. You can bypass the controller by by taking the incoming wires and connecting them direct to the motor and transformer. There is usually a wiring diagram on the control. Of course, the power should be off. Be very careful! GFM

I have new boiler installed a few month ago- SlantFin boiler/ Beckett oil burner with the control (GeniSys Model 7505). A few weeks ago, the system was shut down with red flashing light on reset button. By pushing reset button once, it started to run again and worked since then. (I was out of town a few weeks so I'm not sure if it's been working continuously.) Last night, the same problem, I pushed reset button and restarted, however it was shut down again in the morning. It appears something keeps shutting the system down. Oil is in the tank and it's been tuned up by boiler man last time he came out to check a few weeks ago. Any idea what could be the cause of the problem? Could it be faulty control or wiring? I'd appreciate any insight you can offer.
@grayfurnaceman
@grayfurnaceman 11 жыл бұрын
My thoughts would be it is an oil supply problem. Be sure there is no sooting in the vent by looking in the barometric damper. It is possible that the new boiler and burner has broken loose garbage in the oil line and plugged it. It could be a control problem but eliminate supply problems first. GFM

Thank you for your fast reply. I presume that the transformer life will be shorter if its always on. I heard that the new electronic igniter units are not as durable as the Iron Core types, maybe this is why most newer relays are of the intermittent type. Most probably the intermittent type relays will also save on the electricity consumption. Thank you for making all those videos and sharing your knowledge they are very informative, have a happy new year.

You probably got air into the line. If you have a newer Cad cell relay, they will only let you press it once. You can fool it by pressing a button underneath to give another try. I did a video on this in my oil furnace series. You can bleed it if it is one pipe at the pump. Bleed until it gets clear. Hope this helps. GFM
