Cut-Rate Commander | Vraska, the Silencer

Hey folks! Sorry the upload was a day late (IRL stuff caught up with me) but the Vraska build is up now! And with Morder Horizons 3 coming up - and basically the entire set leaked already.... - let me know which commanders from that set you folks would like to see me tackle in future builds once we're done covering the Percon Upgrades for that set!

I love these budget deck videos. You really keep everything in mind something as simple as running Planeswalkers cause we will be keeping enemy creature count low is the type of stuff that I love to think about in deck building. Pretty much all my decks are built over your budget decks!

A card that NEVER gets played and could be a fun addition is Vermiculos. With the amount of treasures you're gonna be making, this can become a wincon that swings in for huge damage, a big blocker if you use Vraska's ability on someone else's turn when they attack you, or just a great bait removal card when you grow it. Also, Fangren Marauder can net you a pile of life since you're going to be putting so many artifacts into the graveyard.

Vraska keeping the abilities of the cards it steals is rather good, didn't even notice that thing at first and thought she just turned them into treasures losing other abilities. From the leaks of MH3, Kudo, King Among Bears has been rather interesting on turning everything into bears, and then Ashling, Flame Dancer as a mono red spell slinger deck. Looking forward on what MH3 commanders you'll cover.

Oof... guess Analysis Paralysis was too scary. Or just MC priviledges. Day 990 of waiting for the face reveal. Thoughts on Modern Horizons 3?

Yeah, Kellan was just able to edge out a victory in the polls, but it was neck and neck there for a while. Honestly, I wish I had the time to build both but with Modern Horizon 3 coming up (and a milestone we have to celebrate) I just don't have the time..... Then regarding Modern Horizons 3, its shaping up to be a good looking set so far - with a lot of good stuff in the commander decks and in the main set. I honestly can't wait to start brewing around some of these after I'm done covering the precons!

Excellent build as always! I actually have two card recommendations here, I'd personally replace Go for the Throat with Bitter Triumph. It's the same CMC but is conditionless creature (or planeswalker) removal, with the very slight downside of needing to either discard a card (don't do that one probably) or lose 3 life. Generally speaking I like my removal to be as conditionless as it can be, and the likes of stuff like Go for the Throat, or Doom Blade, have failed me so many times at clutch moments lol Now the other card I just want to mention without any idea for a replacement, just because it's genuinely one of the best lifegain spells I've seen in the game and nobody knows about it. It's called "Grim Feast" and for just 3CMC you have an enchantment that deals 1 damage to you during your upkeep, and WHENEVER AN OPPONENT'S CREATURE DIES, GAIN LIFE EQUAL TO ITS TOUGHNESS. No weird conditions, or once per turn, just... oh my god it WORKS lol. It's not even a horribly expensive card either. Like it's not nothing, but my quick snooping around I did puts it around $5. But yeah just wanted to mention it, there's always commander damage to worry about, but the sheer amount of life this friggin' 3 drop gets you is NUTS, especially combined with how much removal is in this deck. Like imagine a boardwipe lol, you gain like 30.

Not any time soon I'm afraid - lots of deck tech coming up and I simply don't have the time to go back to older sets to tackle commanders from them. That said, since a lot of folks want me to tackle older commanders, maybe in the future when I have more time I can do a "retro" series where I do older builds.... Something to think about...

Sadly I am not the person to provide CEDH deckbuild advice, since that is a VASTLY different beast than the budget or even tradition EDH builds I usually tackle. That said r/CompetitiveEDH on reddit may be able to provide you with the insight your looking for (or can at least tell you if Vraska is CEDH viable). Hope that helps!

Glad you enjoyed it! Roxanne, Starfall Savant is certainly an interesting build around, but sadly I won't have time any time soon due to Modern Horizons 3 being on the Horizon (pun intended). Still, if enough folks want me to keep Outlaws of Thunder Junction commanders in the polls once be bring them back, I would not be opposed to it.

@@GrazzetMTG Understandable! MH3 come really strong, and is next to AC and Bloomburrow (one per month is insane). Would be difficult for Roxanne to have attention, but looking foward to your builds for the next expansions! Altair and Ezio :3 jusjusjus, we will see how they go with the rest of that set, jeje ^^ a Brotherhood kind of deck would be really awesome ^^

How would Displaced Dinosaurs from the Doctor Who set interact with Vraska's ability? Would it give the "treasure" a creature ability as well? Guess the same question for Vihaan's ability? I know by making the "treasures" creatures, it would subject them to possibly be removed by a target spell or board wipe, but might be a game ender situation

Vraska strips them of creature status before any other effects so yes dd works

Both world work, since we have a decent number of edict creatures that we'll be sacing to their own effects to proc them, as well as just getting passive usage out of them as we lose our creatures to removal.

If an opponent’s commander dies, game recognizes it dies and goes to graveyard - can you pay the one to take that commander before it moves to command zone?

no, because it is still the opponents priority to decide if the Commander would actually go to the graveyard. Since the commander then is in Command Zone, I'm pretty sure, it's no longer a legal target.

The player may choose to put their commander in the command zone whenever it changes zones, as a replacement effect. If the player has their commander die its changing zones from battlefield to grave, prompting the zone change to command zone. If the player decides to keep the commander in grave upon death, you now have the option to pay the 1 and take it. However, from this point, the commander card is once again moving zones (grave to battlefield) so the player has the option to instead move it to command zone. Take this as if the player wanted to do a cheeky reanimate play with their commander, you've paid 1 to force them to make a decision, let you keep the commander as a token, or they return it to command zone, which would waste whatever graveyard trick they intended to use with their commander

Sadly not for the time being. Its Kellan, then Modern Horizon 3 Precon Upgrades, then a build featuring one of the alternate commanders for the precons.... But maybe after that I'll have polls that are a mix of Thunder Junction and Mordern Horizons 3 commanders - we'll just have to wait and see.

These decks aren’t bad but my god get someone else to read the script. Dude is painful to listen to with the constant changes in pitch randomly going up and down at awkward times. Just use an AI to read, at least.
