Michael Portillo embarks on a rail adventure aboard the transcontinental Indian Pacific Railway, which stretches from the southern port city of Adelaide, South Australia, 1,700 miles deep into the desert, to the gold rush town of Kalgoorlie, before finishing in Perth, Western Australia.
First, Michael explores McLaren Vale, where an enterprising early 19th century Briton with a murky past began to grow vines. Michael enjoys the fruits of his labours and hears his story from his great great great granddaughter.
Boarding the mighty Indian Pacific, Michael embraces the luxury of a previous age as he travels across Australia's notoriously remote and inhospitable Nullarbor Plain. He discovers the 100-year-old history behind the ambitious line and the tremendous feat of engineering it took to deliver it. In the ghost town of Cook, Michael helps to top up the train's water and is rewarded with dinner under the stars at Rawlinna. He strikes gold in one of the most lucrative goldfields in the world and strikes it lucky in the traditional Australian gambling game of 'Two Up'.
He pays a flying visit to the doctor to hear how patients in remote Western Australia are cared for, then takes to the skies to admire Perth, one of the world's most isolated cities, and its port of Fremantle. South of the city, in Pinjarra, he uncovers a dark chapter in the histories of both Britain and Australia - a child migration programme devised at the time of Michael’s Bradshaw's Guide.
Back in Perth, Michael hears how Edward VIII was caught up in a train accident near Bridgetown and is invited to an Aussie barbie.

Well the series speaks for itself. I watched a few from other commentators but none hold a candle to you Michael. Very very interesting very informative and when broaching the question of historic 'social remedys ' you let us make up our own opinions . Even the issues the 'indiginous folk' of Australia faced and still face you again provided, by your reporting 'style ', a view that allowed us to draw our own conclusions. Michael this is surely your forte !

when I lived at Cook in the early 60`s going to meet the passenger train, which arrived some time around 10 pm from the west was the highlight of the day. We could see the glow of the engine light in the distance about an hour before it arrived. I used to help the train examiner set the diesel pump shed to refuel the engines, (the pump shed was a mass of valves and fuel lines) by directing the fuel through various pipes. Another pass time I enjoyed was shunting, when the " Tea and Sugar " arrived every week. Water and fuel had to be disconnected from the train. I would sit in the fireman`s seat in the engine and direct the driver when he could not see the shunter who was usually the offsider. I think the hierarchy back in Port Augusta would have freaked out if they knew a twelve year old was directing one of their trains from the engine during a shunt. Once when the engine was uncoupled from the train , I actually drove it ( under the watchful eye of the engine driver of course)

Brought back memories of when we took the then Transcontinental in 1963. Got off the train in Cook long enough to be covered with flies. Glad that Portillo mentioned the magnificent sunsets of the Nullarbor. Like traveling on an ocean liner. Kalgoorlie hasn't changed much, but Perth is almost unrecognizable. It's three times as big as it was when we lived there.

Personally tho, I'd like to see him do the railways of New Zealand and then he's covered all major parts of the former British Empire.

This was a great video. My wife and I have been West twice. First time in 1993 by air...second time in 2000 we drove over and returned on the Indian pacific with our car on the back. You did not mention the Prospector train from Kalgoorlie to Perth.

The railway wasn't a continuous until 1992. In the 1940s train, Adelaide to Perth had three gauge changes. Michael's following the 1911 tour guide.
