A couple more things to keep in mind are that it's not phase neutral (so, not good for parallel processing) and that increasing the air band boosts the top end pre-detector (which has the potential to result in increased de-essing). Judging by the hefty noise floor and the clipping, they really wanted it to be analog. Which doesn't make the most sense for a de-esser, but I guess it can be thought of as a de-esser with a bit of added console-like mojo, for when that might be desirable.
@matt_nyc_audioengineer3 жыл бұрын
Did you check if noise and oversampling were on? It certainly shouldn't be doing that but possible the "noise" is adding to the issue?
@audiotoolshed3 жыл бұрын
Good thinking, but changing any of those settings doesnt change anything. It really is a input volume thing. When I use the HF it's less because the low end is ''bypassed'' and reduces the input level for the plugin. When I adjust the calibaration it does make a difference, in default it does it like this, and calibration changing is a bit random. Sometime it happens and sometime it doenst on the same looped audio part. Weird. Chaning input level also fixes it. I'm only suprised by that exact distorted sound it makes when you dont adjust.
@matt_nyc_audioengineer3 жыл бұрын
@@audiotoolshed It was worth a shot. I have used it on a few projects so far. Specifically right after Auto-Tune (first) just to do a bit of light DeEssing before compression. Only on vocals that I can hear the sibilance will be an issue once I compress.

I wish it was that simple for sure. You really need to dial in the plugin.

mine started distorting when the signal was reaching 0dbfs, but of course no one goes that high and again if you switch on the high filter the problem just goes away. I use it on my master buss as it is transparent often does my work.

Yeah that shows it's an input thingy which cause that distortion.

The reason it distorts like that is because they’re using frequency dependent limiting to achieve the de-essing. Listen to the clipping on something like ProQ3. You’ll hear the same thing.
@audiotoolshed3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I hear it on pro-l2. The distortion gets less when you enable the Hf switch, so it’s full frequency level related

It does sound good, the original DVZ hardware has been studio staple for decades for a reason. On the plugin, make sure you calibrate it properly to avoid that overload.

My problem is that it is loading with a blank gui in ableton so not usable at all for me sadly.. i have an older computer tho and have struck this problem a couple times before - something to do with my onboard graphics . Strangely it loads fine in Reaper which i have the demo of but dont really use at this stage for recording projects.
@audiotoolshed3 жыл бұрын
That's weird indeed. What kind of GFX are you running? On an older laptop of minie I could switch between onboard graphics or an nvidia chipset which made a lot of difference. Also, you're not running rescaling in windows or something as well? I have had weird issues with that as well with plugins.

Antares Auto-Tune 5 also clips the signal. But that plugin is old and I think I'm still using the 32 bit version that I got back in the Windows XP days. xD

Agreed regarding the screws in the GUI (and on any plugin with screws, rivets or rack ears). On the mix it's pumping because you have 6-8dB (!) of gain reduction in full frequency mode engaged (triggered by HF). Instead run it in HF mode and calibrate its dBu in the settings window. Clipping: likewise because of input level and it needs to be calibrated to a *nominal analog equivalent +4dBU/0VU level in settings*. i.e.: for a hot mix try +4dBu = -12dBFS. This is basic gain staging 101.
@audiotoolshed2 жыл бұрын
You're right on all points, no doubt about that. I show the HF mode as well later in the video. Makes clear that the plugin works by overal level and doesnt look at hi frequencies only. But I like to counter in regards the calibration. Literally any other de-esser plugin doesnt need this to do its job. Its more of an hassle in the digital domain and unnessesary. That said, you absolutely need to make sure your gain staging is correct, and not because of this 1 plugin. It's just best practice.
@jorgepeterbarton11 ай бұрын
yes it seems like a full frequency mode wouldn't be useful for a master buss anyway.

@@audiotoolshed This deesser might sit at the end of a chain, so it could happen. And that's just not on in 2020. It looks like they couldn't manage to keep something in the floating point realm. Unlike the screws (careful they don’t rust!) that distortion at high input is really something. Wth Lindell? I like to run high input into a lot of analog emulated plugins and control it with output. Lots of folks do. Oh well, I’m happy with the Era 6 de-esser.

If you go to the Plugin Alliance website and log in into your account and check a plugin, you will have the latest version. For instance Amek 200 is at version 1.2.0 , Ampeg SVT-3PRO at version 1.3.0. Those were some random ones i quickly checked. I never see an '' update available' in the plugin themselves though and cant remember if i ever saw it in the installation manager. I guess reinstalling all plugin will install the latest version in all cases.
