Great Hornbill couple build nest, Mate for life, wild love | Rare Great Hornbill Nesting & feeding
The Great hornbill or the great Indian hornbill is found in the Indian subcontinent. This rare wild video documentation explains the nesting behaviour of the Great Hornbill male and female.
The great hornbill breeding season is mostly from January to April and once they pair-up, most hornbills mate for life.
They prefer mature forests for nesting and search for large, tall and old trees, preferably the ones rise above the canopy and with the hollow in a large trunk.
The female hornbill builds a nest in the hollow of the large tree trunk, sealing the opening with a plaster made up mainly of feces or fecal matters after digesting the mud. Females are smaller than males and have bluish-white instead of red eyes. They are important dispersers of many forest tree species.
She remains inside, relying on the male to bring her food, until the chicks are half developed.
The female is fed by her mate through a slit in the seal and then later even the mother/chicks are fed by the Male Hornbill.
During this period the female undergoes a complete moult. The clutch consists of one or two eggs, which she incubates for 38-40 days. The female voids faces through the nest slit, as do the chicks from the age of two weeks. The young chicks have no feathers and appear very plump.
Once the female emerges from the nest, the chicks seal it again. Full development of chicks takes upto five years.
The great hornbill is long-lived, living for nearly 50 years in captivity. It is predominantly frugivorous, but is an opportunist and will prey on small mammals, reptiles and birds.
Due to habitat loss and hunting in some areas, the great hornbill is evaluated as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The great hornbill is the state bird of Kerala and Arunachal Pradesh in India.
