The lead single from The Nashville Sound finds Jason Isbell lamenting the current divisive social climate and the exhaustion many Americans felt since the acrimonious election of Donald Trump. I know you're tired and you ain't sleeping well Uninspired and likely mad as hell But wherever you are, I hope the high road leads you home again "I try to document where I am in my life, and right now, one of my primary concerns is, 'What is my role as a white male in a society that really is in dire need of understanding and empathy for people who aren't white males?'" Isbell told Entertainment Weekly. The singer added that he hopes the message resonates and people refrain from over-reacting. "I want [listeners] to feel encouraged to be vigilant but to still stay classy, for Christ's sake," Isbell said. "If you're doing too much yelling and too much screaming and acting out of frustration, you're not effecting change in any positive way."

This song is a 💯 reaction to the 2016 election - the tattered flag features throughout. (Album released in 2017... hence the line, 'last year was a SOB...) The 'high road' is a reference to Michelle Obama's poignant speech on how to best progress. Isbell is recognizing that people who voted for that outcome have a legit grievance about how the squeeze of regular life is becoming unbearable (folks are 'tired' and likely 'mad as hell'). But degenerating to the lowest common denominator is unacceptable. He's choosing to focus on good news instead of bad. Uplift others in their underappreciated voice instead of the mainstream ignorant blues. It's a hopeful message that inspires folks to exit the wilderness of our echo chambers and meet together on a higher road. Be relentless in the work to bail buckets of water from a sinking ship. Imploring us to remember, 'there can't be more of them than us'.

Wild how drastically things change. That type message now wouldn't resonate. We've been taking the high road for almost a decade now. Obviously ain't it. Isbell was spot on with this one though. He's absolutely one of the best writers of my lifetime.

He's saying there's no use dealing with the Trump cultists, as they will just drag you down into the ditch with them. Stick together with people that have positive wishes for society and try to make them happen, even though it feels hopeless at times. As a liberal living in the reddest and most racist county in Minnesota (Trump gets 75% of the vote here), I can certainly relate to everything in this song. "I've heard enough of the white man's blues."
