I remember on 1975 on my tool and die maker school the teacher making a crankshaft, that was the most difficult machining to be made without cnc process leathe, micrometers, depth gauge, a true knowledge of what the past was, ... very proud of my teacher....👽👍

Very interesting process to watch. I'm surprised that the only time coolant is needed is when drilling the oil holes. I'm a retired Master Engine Machinist and over the years have ground hundreds and maybe even thousands of crankshafts. Fun job but they didn't pay us enough.

They probably did it for filming purposes. I worked in a shop with a crank grinder, and yeah they didn't charge much for the job idk why

On the first crankshaft, what is the percentage of waste material after the machining was done out of the stock? Any idea what size it was at beginning to get a sense of scale of this item. Really enjoyed this one... no ads ;)

Dumb question: why is so little cooling fluid used? Wouldn't it make the tools last longer?
@SkyzzV_
@SkyzzV_ 3 жыл бұрын
Well no... if you’re roughing it’s better to use air as coolant, since you don’t have Thermal shocks at your cutting edge... for finishing you should still use coolant to make the surface better... the best option for tool life is no coolant, except for drills, they need it. Just make sure with your cutting parameters that the heat will go in the chips, not your part
@rogersmith5167
@rogersmith5167 3 жыл бұрын
The theory is the steel chips take the heat away from the tips, with the correct speeds and feeds the actual carbide tips should not get over hot and they do not burn out like high speed tool bits
@ALSomthin
@ALSomthin 4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps if you stop to to realize yes being able to make one is cool. However, a crank shaft produced from a forging doesnt waste half of the stock to make it and is actually stronger.

@@oceannavagator Most of the engineers I have had the pleasure of working with are very hung up with the "title" of engineer and often feel threatened by anyone that can understand things that give them trouble. They dont laugh they quiver in fear of being laughed atso you just have to make them think they are coming up with all the ideas. Some are pretty knowledgable people but by and large many of them still dont always understand that having the title of engineer doesn't always make them right about everything. If I wanted a one off crankshaft and could not obtain a forging I would be happy with one made from a billet of the right steel.

Excellent machining. But I wonder who’s ready to pay for such a piece of amazing work ? It’s only reserved to very special car such as rally or formula. Otherwise, cannot be used in mass production, too expensive ! Time required and loss of material (steel of high grade).
@thomaslewis7883
@thomaslewis7883 2 жыл бұрын
@Alain Mare. Your right, but they're pretty popular. with dragracers as well. ]They will often choose a billet over a forged unit. The Big Block Chevy V8 billet cranks are around 4000 USA retail, While a forged BBC crank is around 2500 retail. The popular Toyota 2JZ inline 6 cylinder crankshaft can be had in billet for 2300 USA retail. The popular K series Honda engine billet crank 1900 USA So they're really not that expensive. Of course, a custom one-off can be expensive.

I don't think that the crank shaft they made here is for any real use. I think it was more of a demo part. The size of the part compared to the chuck makes the crank really tiny.
