Great White were a truly underappreciated rock band in the 80's and 90's... Their sound was more 'boogie blues' rock than arena rock like Motley Crue, Bon Jovi or Whitesnake... Great White did record a cover record of Led Zeppelin songs titled "Great Zeppelin" in 1998... but their original music was closer to the rock of ZZ Top, Foghat or Creedence Clearwater Revival... Seeing them live in concert, they sounded amazing, but not like an 80's 'hair' metal band... that set them apart from the other bands of the era. Unfortunately, original singer Jack Russell is no longer in Great White (he tours as "Jack Russell's Great White" nowadays) because he was struggling w/ addictions after 2010 and nearly died... the band refused to put him on tour unless he stayed clean & sober, and that led to a split. In 2003, a touring version of Great White (vocalist Jack Russell & guitarist Mark Kendall were the only ones from the old line-up there) were involved in a pyro incident that caused a fire at the Station nightclub that killed 100 people, including touring guitarist Ty Longley. That tragedy marred the band's musical legacy... Great White was formed in California in the 70's by Jack Russell (vocals) and Mark Kendall (guitar) w/ Lorne Black (bass) & Gary Holland (drums)... an EP in 1983 led to Great White's debut record in 1984, which was a commercial failure. Audie Desbrow (drums) joined the band and they recorded 'Shot in the dark' in 1986, which had a successful single 'Face the day' (a cover of The Angels) and Great White were signed by Capitol Records. Michael Lardie (guitar/keys) was a longtime collaborator, joined Jack Russell (vocals), Mark Kendall (guitar), Audie Desbrow (drums) and Lorne Black (bass) Great White got MTV exposure and their next album 'Once bitten' was a platinum success in 1987... Tony Montana (bass) joined the band for the next album 'Twice shy' was a even bigger hit, going 2X platinum in 1989... Great White explore more blues influences w/ their 1991 record 'Hooked' which went gold, but 90's 'grunge' rock was starting to take over... Tony Montana left the band. Great White's 1992 album 'Psycho city' was a great record, but failed to sell a half million copies... Great white was dropped by Capitol records. The band spent the 90's releasing more records, but were relegated to small venues... 'Sail away' (1993) was followed by 'Let it rock' (1996) and "Can't get there from here" (1999)... However, the band splintered in 2000 and went their separate ways by 2001. Jack Russell and Mark Kendall reunited Great White w/ session members to tour in 2002, but the Station nightclub fire ended their run... A few years later, the band reunited the classic line up - Jack Russell, Mark Kendall, Michael Lardie & Audie Desbrow... Sean McNabb (bass) was the bass player in 1999and he returned for a few years... Great White recorded the albums 'Back to the rhythm' (2007) and 'Rising' (2009) before their split w/ singer Jack Russell... Terry Ilous (vocals) & Scott Snyder (bass) were recruited to record the next album 'Elation' (2012)... followed by 'Full Circle' (2017)... Great White recently fired Terry Ilous and recruited Mitch Malloy on vocals.
@nitro_001newman22 жыл бұрын
Great history of the band. Thanks for that. I didn’t know Mark Kendall was in the lineup, the night of the fire. I thought it was only Jack Russell from the original lineup. I looked it up, and your info is accurate. I can’t believe Psycho City couldn’t even sell a half a million. This was definitely, because grunge took over. If that album was released in the 80’s, it might have reached platinum, but for sure gold.I liked it better than the Hooked album.

Saw these guy in the mid eighties, before they released this song. They were an opening act for a band I can't recall (maybe Ozzy). I had no idea who they were, but after seeing them, I remember them more than the headline act. At that time I believe they only had one guitarist, the same guy in this video. He was right in front of me with a sweet BC Rich guitar. (I think.) What I definitely remember is they rocked, they had their stuff together. You can tell when a band puts a lot of time into their work, they were craftsmen.

my dawg! So funny - Great White was gonna be my patreon request for Feb after you thoroughly enjoyed Kix (similar band/sound). Figured you'd enjoy this. Shout out to Mike!!! Their entire "Twice Shy" album is fantastic. My two favorite songs are on that album: Mista Bone, and House of Broken Love (very bluesy). I am surprised why no one had turned you on to them sooner. Russell also did some Zeppelin song covers - sounds amazing. One of the more notorious events involving them was The Station nightclub fire on evening of February 20, 2003, in West Warwick, Rhode Island during a set. Pyrotechnics were used during the set, and had not been cleared to use them at that venue - it set the place on fire, and people couldn't get out. killing 100 people including their guitarist Ty Longley, and injuring 230 others. Was a horrible tragedy. Keep rocking, T!!! Will hit you up, soon. :-)

As was mentioned by someone else, I saw them in concert when they opened for White Snake in Southern California. They tore it up, and right at the second it turned time for them to be off stage, White Snake pulled the power mid song and sent roadies out to pull them and their equipment of stage. When white snake came out, the booe was so loud And so much trash was being thrown up at the stage that white snake acquiesced and let great white come back out to finish their song and set. My wife and I were there to see Whitesnake, but man did great white put on a great show.

I saw these guys in concert with Tesla back in 1989. Perhaps the most fun week of my life. Saw the concert Sunday night, got a new girlfriend on Wednesday, and won the state football title on Saturday. Pretty damn good seven day stretch. Great White was one of those bands that sounded as good live as they did on their albums. I have no idea why they are skipped over as much as they are these days when people talk about the 80's rock scene. They had many damn good songs. If you want to check out a really bluesy (and pretty damn funny) song, check out "Mista Bone." One of my favorite songs they did wasn't even on any of their albums. Perhaps their biggest hit was "Once Bitten, Twice Shy." On the cassette single for that song, their were too other tracks, "Wasted Rock Ranger" and "Slow Ride." Other than sharing a title, "Slow Ride" has nothing to do with the song of the same name released by Foghat. Absolutely love "Slow Ride" and have no idea why it didn't make any of their regular albums. After that cassette single went out of print, it was impossible to find that song anywhere. I can remember finding it finally on Napster, but only one person had it, and every time I'd try and download it, I'd get about 3/4 done and the guy would logoff. And with Napster at that time, you had to start over every time. Took me two months, but I finally got it. Then a few years later, Great White finally included the song on one of their many greatest hits collections, so I ran out and bought that CD. Definitely worth a listen.
