I had a Swissy! She was the best dog ever. I was a single mom and my daughter wanted to walk around town alone when she was 10 (small town, but still). I was so nervous, so I told her she had to take the dog. No one messed with her. That Swissy was so protective.

I had a Swissy back in the 1990s and lost him after 12 years. He was so smart and everyone loved him. Even my animal hating neighbor loved him and asked to see were he was buried to pay respects. He even loved listening to classical music. Its the European blood! I miss him even after 21 years.

I am right there with you. I am 55 and have owned many dogs. You remember that old joke, ''you might be a redneck if your porch collapses and more than 10 dogs are injured''?!? That was me as a kid and teenager. I had so many dogs! I remember every one, and if I think about even one of them for too long, I will tear up. Its so bad that my wife sees me doing that and now just asks ''which one''?

I have a GSMD hybrid and he’s been great. Thought he was just a happy goofball until the pool man came through the gate unbeknownst to me. He ran at him at 100 mph stopped two feet from him, spread out in a fighting stance and barked like I’ve never heard before. All I yelled was off, he ran back and sat next to my side all with no training. He was 2 years old when this happened he’s now 3, I knew I had a dog that would protect my family and be a goofball at the same time.

What a wonderful dog. My mom, who is retired, would go to the back yard and do gardening all day long. Our Swissy would stand right next to her all day long, having a conversation with each other. They had their own special language.

I got a Swissy/Husky mud, found in the dumpster in Fairbanks Alaska, he was seven weeks old. Now he's ten, best dog I ever owned! Due to the Husky he avoids water and hardly ever barks but says " ooohooohooh" in a very deep voice! And yes, he's damn stubborn😂, but lovely!

So true! Does you dogs also have this large bark/roar? Its more a roar, not a firm "woof" if u know what I mean. And he sometimes does that when he is in guardmode. It looks impressive and intimidating for people that dont know that its not agression, just letting me know somethings out of the ordinary. My dog also does not like to be alone. He just wants to be with me all the time.

We had two GSMD, today we only have one. The male dog was given to us when he was 1 year old because he was difficult to handle and showed aggression against the young kids of his family. There was a biting incident with a kid and another one with a dog. He was not gentle at all, neither with humans nor with dogs. The female dog we got when she was two years and she was also rowdy, but easy to train and more cuddly. They were both very "physical" dogs who liked to play rough and were strong, at 1 year they weigh around 40 kg! We did own a German Shepherd and a Rottweiler before, both were from a shelter and had issues, but none of them was as difficult to work with like the male GSMD. He was more independent from humans than other dogs and he was not very food or play motivated. We needed a long time to bond and a long time to train him. Then he became a great dog, very protective around his property, fearless, but easier to lead. He was distant to strangers and was not interested in being touched or fed by them, he would just ignore them. As far I can tell our male dog has an unusual personality for a GSMD, a lot of them are more relaxed. Sadly the health of the race is not the best, but a lot of them are to fat and because of this they have more health issues than necessary. You write that GSMD are good for agility, I'm surprised about this. In my country it is not advised to use them for this sport because of the risk of joint damages. I have never seen a GSMD doing agility, maybe it is different in USA. We went on walks with them at least 8 km a day and we also took them for short and not to fast running trails. Of course hiking is great too, but now he is to old.

Hi zita, that sounds like a typical swissy to me... The swiss mountains where this dogbreed is from are really remote areas. The swissy is a dog who belongs on a farm, usually its chained to a little dog-cottage in front of the farm or the drive way and stays outside for 365 days a year on its own. Its supposed to alarm the farmer if anyone enters the property. Its not a agressiv dog but it will stand his ground and bark, so its normal that this breed is not good with people and not focused on food, there is usually only one person who is allowed to feed the dog and thats the farmer. they are no family dog, in switzerland we keep our kids away from guard dogs and let them play with the other farm animals... This is also the reason why you dont see those dogs that often anymore and the breed almost died out. Switzerland is a very small country and the population is growing, so there are not alot of farmers who live at remote areas anymore who need a dog like this... The swissy is definitely not good for dog agility So if you decide to own a swissy make sure you get a puppy from a decent breeder and train it right from the very first day
@zita8568

@@adrianbosshard5190 The breeders of GSMD will often tell you that they are dogs for families and will say that they are especially great with kids and I can not confirm this, because both of our dogs were not great with kids and their owners gave them away because of this reason. I know other GSMD that are friendly with kids, but they are not always as great as breeders describe them (like a babysitter). Honestly I wouldn't feel comfortable with having them live outside, because in their own way they enjoyed being with us and did it even more when they became older. Our male dog is 13 now and he still tries to be a guard dog although he is almost blind and deaf, he is a very good dog with rules and training like you say.

I have a tough time deciding when people ask me what should their first dog be between the Swissy and a Lab... to me, if you have SPACE AND ROOM... I lean more towards the Swissy but man you can't lose with the Lab either.

Ya like dags? My Swissy wasn't *hard* to housetrain, just a pain in the ass. He just outright refused to poo in the dark, or the rain. Wouldn't do it. I'd let him inside, and immediately he'd go into poo stance. So... I didn't want to let him know it's okay to shit about the house if it's raining, so I carried him outside immediately.. And just stayed with him until he did his thing. It was heartbreaking, but after two of these sessions, it was all done.

Does anybody out there have experience with the three dog breeds (or mixes) I have narrowed it down to? The Swissie, Rhodesian Ridgeback, and Mastador. I am in my fiftiies but an avid hiker with experience with stubborn breeds. (Malamute) Am I missing one in this size range?
@aessidhe6304

I grew up with a rhodesian ridgeback, whom i loved dearly. He was a sweet boy, mostly obedient, and very loving. He loved having his ridge scratched and could slide his skin around so that you were scratching in just the right spot. He did not do well in winter at all. We had a coat for him to wear. He was very protective of the family…and i do mean very protective. His only detractors were that he could be very very stubborn and he was definitely dog aggressive toward dogs not part of the family. We had to work with him a lot on that last trait. If you werent paying attention to him or surroundings well enough while at the park or on a walk and he saw another dog, he would go for it with a vengeance if voice correction wasnt applied early to de-escalate his reaction. That said i think that was part of his protective nature and he never hesitated to put himself between me and another dog that was threatening, like the neighbors dalmation that used to leave its yard to cross the street and come up on to my porch to try and eat me every time i tried to go out my front door the stray that tried to eat me when i was out for a run one evening. My rhody was all in when it came to defending his family. If I lived in a southern state that didnt get cold weather, I would consider getting another rhody.

Definitely have problems with urinary incontinence so bad she is now an outdoor dog. I miss her so much being indoors. I don't know what to do. Meds that dry her up urine wise don't help that much. I absolutely love her though. The neighborhood loves her for her bark. The most majestic bark from a dog yeah that is the word to best describe it. Since she would NEVER bite anyone-I call her my sissy swissie-I never worry about her roaming the country neighborhood we live in. The properties are spread out with acres between. Anyways she is about 10 or more years old we adopted her when she was full grown. Love her so much just wish I could have her inside but she peed everywhere randomly. Not hygienic.

I just lost my 4-year-old Swissy this week to idiopathic epilepsy. She had been diagnosed 14 months prior when she experienced her first seizure. I'm so sorry for you. My recommendation is to seek expert canine neurology care and enjoy the time you have with your Swissy. They are a phenomenal breed, but epilepsy is really hard to manage. Get your pup the exercise they need every day and don't blame yourself for this condition. Someday we'll have an answer as to why this happens. Take care.

Imagine putting a prong collar on a pup, any pup. We never had the need to put one, or a choke collar on our Swissy - it's called training the behaviors you want. And BTW - according to the Swiss law, use of shock collars, prong collars and/or choke collars in Switzerland is against the law. Should have included THAT in your report on the breed.

We have a 6 month, 67 lb, old GSMD , and all I can say is that this is not a dog for first time owners. He is a handful, challenging, in your face at times, and loves ruining our clothes. He didn’t discover toys until maybe a month ago. We are having to invest SOOOOO much energy into him . That being said , he is not always like that, and is getting better finally. But, wow, what a character. He is one heck of a handsome dog, gorgeous musculature, expressive face and voice. Loves other people so far, and dogs too from what we can tell. But he is VERY wary during the first greeting moments with new people, backing up and going forward several times before contact. Than he becomes the love magnet. When he eats kibble, it flies out of his mouth all over the place, and he drinks like a fish and then shakes his head sprinkling everything and everyone. He is also a big whiner. His bark blows up my brain in the house....and he seems to enjoy using his voice when he wants something or doesn’t like what is going on. He trains really well for 5 minutes at most and then looks at you and says I don’t feel like doing this garbage anymore. Very sensitive dog FYI - so you have to be careful not to yell at him, and PRAISE a lot . We got discouraged with him several times but are glad we pushed our way through to this point....he will be a great dog. Despite being a shit, and challenging, he is not mean. So DIFFERENT from the three goldens we have had.

We adopted our boy from our local shelter. He’s 1 1/2 years old, but is so smart. He was advertised as a “Staffordshire terrier”, and spent 8 months in the shelter with only 2 families showing any remote interest. We fostered him for 1 day, then said screw it, let’s adopt him. After doing a doggy DNA test, we confirmed that he is a nearly purebred Swissie! If the shelter would have correctly identified his breed, I have no doubt he would have been adopted in a couple weeks or days. So glad they thought he was a Staffordshire hahaha Easily the best dog I’ve ever had, love him to pieces!

10 week old Tucker... sweetest thing, follows you everywhere you go. Gentle around little kids and curious about bugs, he’ll just watch them fly around. Barks at birds though. His parents are show dogs and he’s show quality, long snout and good hips. They said he’s got an almost perfect build, except for his ligament laxity. He loves to cuddle and whines when you put him in his cage, especially if you’re around. Potty trained even at such a young age, but sometimes has accidents. Doesn’t like water but we can expose him to that. Nippy! Knaws on wrists and knuckles if you get too close. Cold toys, ice chips and bones help with that. And our first dog ever, he’s a lovely boy. Tips anyone?

It sounds like you do really good with him, swissys need a long time to be fully grown and develope an adult character like rottweiler for example... Make sure you are very very strict with him and train marker words. The command no or leave it is gonna be a very important one, so if he is jumping up on people or bark at someone/something you can handle that behaviour... Allways use his name in a good way, as a reward... For a example, if you call him by his name he needs to come and gets rewarded... When he is doing something wrong use words like no or leave it and dont use his name so the name of the dog stays positiv

Wow, I just love to see something about the GSMD. I have a one year old Swissy called Sven and he is the love of my life. I work with dogs as a therapy dog trainer and I decided to keep this dog in my family. Heś very intelligent, funny, incredibly stubborn but just fantastic to have around. He follows me everywhere! He does not like to be alone, so heś not a dog for a kennel or just outside. He loves to be with people all the time. He loves kids, but u need to be careful because of the weight. Sven is now 130 pound. A very large Swissy. Big boned and tall that we notice when he has his puppy rage:) Two times a day he just goes into this mad adhd mode and runs around the house, through the kitchen, garden, livingroom with a jump on the couch and back again. Its hilarious. I do need to say that of you are not firm or lack experience with dogs, this is not a dog for you as its too strong. Also, a Swissy needs a gentle but firm aproach. Never yell at him, he just needs gentle training. Sven knew the sit, stay and go command at just 8 weeks old. So they are very smart. I can just go and and on about this dog, but its time to take it for a walk.

All three an A+, since I kept him away from fights and I took that job of interrupting dog fights, he is the most gentle giant and he doesn't submit 'cause I've got to protect him😂

My Leo is very sweet, but he’s protective of me, and gets very jealous if he doesn’t get all of my attention. He’s happiest if the whole family is together in one room, so that he can keep an eye on us. But he’s generally pretty chill. He’s like a human.

My greater Swiss mountain dog is the sweetest girl ever she's my service dog and she loves to talk she has different vocalizations for what she wants and as big as she is she still thinks she's a lap dog. If I'm paying too much attention to my phone she does the alert bark and scares me every time LOL but it's good because we all need to be more present. She also loves any kind of vegetable or fruit I had to make sure whatever I eat is dog safe because she has to have a little bit of whatever it is I love her so much I couldn't imagine my life without her ❤ thank you for this video I love learning new facts about her

HI love your channel I love dogs, I also love the fact that you do designer breeds like the Berndoodle, can you do one on the beagle and Corgi mix I think it's called a Borgi, and the dachshund and beagle mix is known as a Boxle or a Beaschund. Thank you :)
