I am not sure what Holyfield and Lewis have to do with Holmes talking about Tyson though..... but anyone who knows anything about boxing would tell you that both of them fought Tyson at the perfect time in his career.... Post Michael Spinks, the Tyson era was over..... Kevin Rooney is the man responsible for Tysons reign. Once Kevin was fired, Tyson went down the shitter. You could see the difference immediately after the Spinks fight, even though Tyson continued winning...... Holyfield also fought Tyson 1 year after he was released from a 4 year prison term! lol.... In todays boxing, 1 year out of the ring is considered "ring rust"..... Add another 3 years to that number!! lmao.... I wouldn’t say destroy. Larry Holmes although not as quick or as speedy with his jab, he did have a strategic mindset for a boxer. Essentially, he would take measure of his opponents’s rhythm and start fighting his foes a bit late. That was quite smart because he also adapted Ali’s footwork and jab. But on the other hand, Ali himself was literally the fastest fighter both on feet and by punch. But he wasn’t exactly scientific with his fighting style because he had trouble with short swarmers and underdogs that had similar fighting styles. Also he couldn’t avoid left books and lost 2/3 with his fight against Norton. I’d say if they fought at their respective primes, Ali would win by points ‘barely’ by an unanimous decision. 5 out of 3 fights, Holmes should win around 2.5-3 on average. Ali around 3-3.5 with high difficulty.

I lost respect for Holmes when he said Rocky Marciano wouldn’t be fit to carry his jock strap. About a dead Marciano who was unbeaten in 49 fights and who Larry was bitter because he didn’t beat Marciano’s record. Larry is an all time great, but he’s in a fantasy world thinking he had a win against a bodily and mentally fit to fight Ali.

Holmes makes a great point. He has a claim. He made a ton of money and is still lucid as an old man.

Agreed... Larry was a dam good fighter... I think Ali in his prime though would a gotten to him... But Larry was crafty and he did have that sweet jab that could a matched Ali... sometimes it's all about the match-up and the style... It would a been one helluva fight seeing both of them in there prime going at it...

(Cont.) The reality is; that Holmes didn't beat a shell of the great Ali, he beat a shell of the "washed up" Ali. On top of this, Ali was later learned to have been brain-damaged, dehydrated (from diet pills), and suffering from kidney ailments the night of their fight. It's hard to believe that Holmes would proclaim greatness for his win over the man at that stage. Then even consider that he was unimpressive in his win;Ali appeared his equal in the early rnds & was never knocked off his feet.

I hate it when Holmes takes credit for the Ali victory, but putting that aside he does deserve to be further down the list. He should definitely be in front of Marciano, Frazier and Tyson. All of Marciano's notable wins were past their prime

larry is not in a shadow of no one. the reason people dislike him just because of that. sitting there saying he is the number one. and also have the nerv to take credit for beating ali. how lame is that really. people dislike him because his saying those things. i would understand it if he was active and said it. at that point he is retired , and still saying those things. if he would be genuine and honest in how it really was. people would accept him. simple is that

Ever saw Tyson bragging about beating Holmes ? In his mind he said Holmes old I don’t wanna be that guy Holmes was that guy What even more worse he knew Ali from early 70’s Can’t he notice how late 70’s ali speech became more slower Even Leon spinks who fought ali 2 years earlier never bragged about beating Ali Larry is just dumb and ignorant Ali went to distance with angelstia and he didn’t. But he forgot younger Earnie Shavers couldn’t put old ali down And 4 years Later he knocked him down

Larry's place in boxing history is quite similar to Marciano's. Marciano defeated elderly legends... Rocky was the interim "champion" in the period after Louis and before Liston/Ali/... Holmes-Ali was Marciano-Louis all over again... And Larry was the new interim, past Ali and before Tyson/Holyfield/Lewis

Ali was easily the greatest, we didn't even see Ali at his best, 27,28,29, we saw a Ali without legs in the 70's, who had hands faster than Robinson, courage and a durability that should be written about constantly, his fight with Shavers, while way over the hill should seal the deal, whereas Holmes, Norton etc went down on Shavers bombs, Ali just took them, out on his feet still throwing, glassy eyed, could barely stand was still throwing, if the fight went 16 Ali would have got him, THAT makes Ali the best, think all those fights and no scars, indentations, nothing, so a Tyson or anyone else first IF they could get to him would never be able to put together enough leather to take him out. One last thing, with Ali he fought up to his opponent, so if he fought an average fighter he didn't train hard and did just enough to win, fighting a better fighter, IE Foreman, look how accurate and fast his shots were, but since his opponents were good it was hard to see how superior he was, the Cleveland Williams fight probably best example. Zora Folley, the 34 year old veteran who fought everyone said after "Ali is the bible of boxing, and you had better read it before fighting him, this guy can't be beat"
