True, I think I would have put Alice in Chains in a tier (I'm also a huge fan) but considering the fact that they aren't strictly metal he made a pretty sound judgement. Skid Row was just "no" and Stone Sour was "I'm not considering them metal right now!" Lol I get the hair metal joke, but Stone Sour are Alternative metal so they do fall under that category! Maybe you could argue that Stone Sour also fall under Post-grunge, Nu metal, Hard rock and even Alternative rock so maybe they aren't strictly metal a bit like Alice in Chains but how many other people still know 30/30-150 as their signature song? That song is the perfect template of an Alternative metal song and most of their albums have more of a metal leaning too!
@jpdicey7892 жыл бұрын
@@futurebreedmachine9302 I agree, Nirvana was mostly a sloppy mish mash of the Pixies, Wipers and the Melvins, they might have been revolutionary at the time and had a somewhat interesting sound even by today's standards to give credit where it's due! However, their music lacked feeling and mostly just struck me as apathetic cynicism, plus they weren't in anyway considered metal, other than through Grunge lol Cobain wasn't a bad singer but he didn't have the vocal power and presence of Staley or Cornell. Both Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were interesting and dynamic in their approach and their music had a lot of feeling aswell! Though I would argue Soundgarden had more of a psychedelic edge whereas Chains had more of a harmonies and melodies edge.

Most the bands, I listen to would fall under one genre of metal or another but I’ve never really cared to just hunt out one genre. If I like the music, I like the music I don’t really give a fuck if it’s one genre of metal or not or if it’s metal or hard rock or whatever. I never understood this just seeking out everything in one genre and only loving that and losing your mind. Anytime you meet someone who likes music that isn’t in that genre. Pantera, Ozzy, Metallica, Alice In Chains, Slayer, Guns N Roses, White Zombie, C.O.C. , Mudvayne , Megadeth, Sepultura, Hellyeah, Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Fear Factory, Korn…. most of these bands don’t sound anything like each other, but I’ve never cared. As a huge Sabaton and Nightwish fan I think both those reviews were very fair. I was actually surprised by your take on Sabaton, expected it to be much lower given some of the previous videos I have watched of yours in regards to lyrics not being music and, as you rightly point out, Sabaton is very much about the history and the lyrics. The songs are incredibly similar to each other, and they definitely have a structure they write to that both works incredibly well to produce hit songs but also is a bit too by the book, but I have never heard a Sabaton song (except for the ballads.....) that I didn't like. On the Nigthwish end, I don't think they write for an aesthetic as much as their aesthetic is meant to fit the writing. Tuomas has always been the writer and this has always been his vision, so the appearance of the band part of his storytelling. And that storytelling.......well it only really makes sense to him :p But the songs are amazing (in my opinion anyway) but its a very specific style.

You have a great opinion on both bands. I like both of them, too, although Nightwish comes out on top for me. The thing I very much dislike about Nightwish however is how they spat out some of the most talented artists, like Tarja, Marco, Jukka and that's at least partly because of Tuomas who's always been talked about as elitist and hard to work with. I'd also count Anette Olzon, too. She never got close to the vocal poweress of Tarja Turunen and Floor Jansen, but her style fit the band particularly well in the era of 2006-2012.

@@DDxRaptor that's true about Tarja, but Jukka left because of insomnia and Marco because of depression and other issues. If you list the Big 4", one thing you should notice is each band, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer, they each have their own sound, love them or hate them. Anthrax was my intro in Thrash music in the late 80's. I loved the punkie sound with Joey's vocals. Megadeth was next. Metallica followed. Slayer was the last of the Big 4. I listened to a few other bands, but they simply did not have the impact as they often sounded too much like one of the Big 4 I already was listening to. While Thrash more or less went into hibernation in the mid and late 90's, the rebirth of Thrash in the mid 2000 was great. Not "crossover" Thrash but Thrash as it meant to be played.

You said you don't like the latest Rammstein stuff: I think the latest album, Zeit, sees them with some of their best work yet. If you'll check only one song to reconsider, make it 'Angst': Nice auxiliary percussion in the hook, nice chord progression in the pre-chorus, teasing said chord progression in the 2nd half of the verse while the bass holds down a nice pedal note underneath, and most importantly: Till's never-before-seen intensity around the 2/3 mark of the song - I have never heard Rammstein like this before and I love it. Lyricals content and video are also very good, the theme being the radicalisation of the masses via fear (Angst), while using the phrase "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?", which literally translated means 'Who's afraid of the boogie man?', but is actually an old-timey children's game. The allusion to xenophobia/racism growing from some elements in society fanning the flames of fear and exploiting it - combining this with the children's game innocence is classic Rammstein but with an actual message, not just empty shock value. I applaud it.
@muenchhausenmusic2 жыл бұрын
And since you, Mike, are very much focussed on musical/compositional elements as opposed to lyical - I am the same btw - you'll also enjoy: - the beautiful calm and open mixolydian part in the album closer 'Adieu' - the use of autotune in the track 'Lügen' (= Lies) and Till still again bringing the same insane intensity we heard in Angst before - how in the song 'Dicke Titten' at one point there is this wonderful clash of the ionian scale brass intro being carefreely played over the phrygian downtuned main riff. So bold-cheeky As you can see the last four tracks of the album are imo def the strongest and among Rammstein's strongest material period. Zeit could be added to it, but that is mainly because of the lyrics. The song deals with our mortality. Should you decide to give it another chance, feel free to let us know what you think! Cheers'

Breaking Benjamin should be in the 'No' category, I wouldn't consider them metal at all besides using baritone guitars, but even fucking Arctic Monkeys use baritones

No life of agony, no type o negative, no crowbar, no faith no more. Wtf is this tier list I mean regardless of where they rank they definitely deserve a spot on the list.

Didnt like this guy at first but then he put bling guardian in A. Underrated band. Thanks for the video

Smething about Mike putting the bands high for a legacy and then keeping In Flames down bugs me. You know the whole "1school, 3 bands, melodic death metal is born" story? (In flames, at the gates, dark tranquility, if anyone is wondering)

Disturbed A tier? List can’t be taken seriously
@xATown23xGaming2 жыл бұрын
I'd attribute it a lot to the Metallica effect, I live close to the country and folks out there know Disturbed. They've gone commercial while staying to their sound I hear them on regular radio often plus come on "Land of Confusion" "Immortalized" "Stupify" " Stricken" just to name a few I think they've earned A tier and B at the lowest for sure

They aren't A tier these days but they have undeniable classics and Draiman can fucking sing.

Sepultura formed in 1984, Godsmack formed in 1995, but Sepultura is "Godsmackish"... Tells me all I need to know about our great Metal saviours knowledge...

Can't believe you done Kvelertak like that. My favourite band at the moment. Been listening to their 4 albums on repeat, especially their debut. Quality stuff

Love this video but dimmu borgir has some INCREDIBLE deep cuts, I must say. If you don’t like black metal vocals nothing black metal is gonna ever sound good to ya though and it’s okay.

Whoever made this tier list is clearly European :D :D I'm 100 certain no one from America would put so many powermetal bands in there and omit bands like Cannibal Corpse :D :D
