True, I think I would have put Alice in Chains in a tier (I'm also a huge fan) but considering the fact that they aren't strictly metal he made a pretty sound judgement. Skid Row was just "no" and Stone Sour was "I'm not considering them metal right now!" Lol I get the hair metal joke, but Stone Sour are Alternative metal so they do fall under that category! Maybe you could argue that Stone Sour also fall under Post-grunge, Nu metal, Hard rock and even Alternative rock so maybe they aren't strictly metal a bit like Alice in Chains but how many other people still know 30/30-150 as their signature song? That song is the perfect template of an Alternative metal song and most of their albums have more of a metal leaning too!
@jpdicey789
@jpdicey789 2 жыл бұрын
@@futurebreedmachine9302 I agree, Nirvana was mostly a sloppy mish mash of the Pixies, Wipers and the Melvins, they might have been revolutionary at the time and had a somewhat interesting sound even by today's standards to give credit where it's due! However, their music lacked feeling and mostly just struck me as apathetic cynicism, plus they weren't in anyway considered metal, other than through Grunge lol Cobain wasn't a bad singer but he didn't have the vocal power and presence of Staley or Cornell. Both Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were interesting and dynamic in their approach and their music had a lot of feeling aswell! Though I would argue Soundgarden had more of a psychedelic edge whereas Chains had more of a harmonies and melodies edge.

Anthrax is not really that bad. Their "punk thrash" style can be very fun sometimes, even comical I would say. It's a breath of fresh air compered the other thrash bands that used to take themselves way too seriously. Not trying to say they are the best, but definitely not the worst. I personally find most of Slayer's stuff way less interesting, and that comes from a prog-thrash head.

Hey yo, big Anthrax fan here. I love the band quite a lot. Mostly the Thrash Years from 'Spreading the disease' up to 'Persistence of time'. I think they have some great riffs, fun solos and very wonderful singing done by Joey Belladonna. The John Bush era has some good songs but i don't really care about it. The newer stuff is also quite good. I think they are great at making fun thrash songs, as well as some personal and emotional songs. I wanted to see them this month but sadly they cancelled the european tour. P.S.: No one cares who is or isn't in 'the big four', all of the oldschool thrashers made bangers and albums that were constantly rivaling each other in technique and quality. Have a great day!

To say that FFDP is higher up than Cradle of Filth says a lot about your opinion. Dani’s voice is great, especially when paired with Sara’s backing vocals (in the early days). A lot of forgettable songs and albums as the years went by, so they’re not consistently good, but so many great ones (between 96-03’) which warrants a high B IMO.

Dani's live performances are honestly garbo. He just switches between pissed off Cartman, helium Strong Bad, and an insane bird without strategy and working with the atmosphere, he just does them whenever he feels like it. Now his high scream works on the studio versions, it actually feels strategically and sparingly placed there. Dani's vocals are more monotonous live, and even the studio versions aren't safe from the Cartman screaming. Now yeah, I will say Cradle of Filth is more interesting than FFDP. Also, Dimmu Borgir doesn't deserve to be below Godsmack imo.

I wonder what I the viewer am to do with such opinions. For example, you rip on bands with criticisms that may apply today but complete ignore certified classic albums they have produced. As a huge Sabaton and Nightwish fan I think both those reviews were very fair. I was actually surprised by your take on Sabaton, expected it to be much lower given some of the previous videos I have watched of yours in regards to lyrics not being music and, as you rightly point out, Sabaton is very much about the history and the lyrics. The songs are incredibly similar to each other, and they definitely have a structure they write to that both works incredibly well to produce hit songs but also is a bit too by the book, but I have never heard a Sabaton song (except for the ballads.....) that I didn't like. On the Nigthwish end, I don't think they write for an aesthetic as much as their aesthetic is meant to fit the writing. Tuomas has always been the writer and this has always been his vision, so the appearance of the band part of his storytelling. And that storytelling.......well it only really makes sense to him :p But the songs are amazing (in my opinion anyway) but its a very specific style.

The thing I very much dislike about Nightwish however is how they spat out some of the most talented artists, like Tarja, Marco, Jukka and that's at least partly because of Tuomas who's always been talked about as elitist and hard to work with. I'd also count Anette Olzon, too. She never got close to the vocal poweress of Tarja Turunen and Floor Jansen, but her style fit the band particularly well in the era of 2006-2012.

If you list the Big 4", one thing you should notice is each band, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer, they each have their own sound, love them or hate them. Anthrax was my intro in Thrash music in the late 80's. I loved the punkie sound with Joey's vocals. Megadeth was next. Metallica followed. Slayer was the last of the Big 4. I listened to a few other bands, but they simply did not have the impact as they often sounded too much like one of the Big 4 I already was listening to. While Thrash more or less went into hibernation in the mid and late 90's, the rebirth of Thrash in the mid 2000 was great. Not "crossover" Thrash but Thrash as it meant to be played.

You said you don't like the latest Rammstein stuff: I think the latest album, Zeit, sees them with some of their best work yet. If you'll check only one song to reconsider, make it 'Angst': Nice auxiliary percussion in the hook, nice chord progression in the pre-chorus, teasing said chord progression in the 2nd half of the verse while the bass holds down a nice pedal note underneath, and most importantly: Till's never-before-seen intensity around the 2/3 mark of the song - I have never heard Rammstein like this before and I love it. Lyricals content and video are also very good, the theme being the radicalisation of the masses via fear (Angst), while using the phrase "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?", which literally translated means 'Who's afraid of the boogie man?', but is actually an old-timey children's game. The allusion to xenophobia/racism growing from some elements in society fanning the flames of fear and exploiting it - combining this with the children's game innocence is classic Rammstein but with an actual message, not just empty shock value. I applaud it.

And since you, Mike, are very much focussed on musical/compositional elements as opposed to lyical - I am the same btw - you'll also enjoy: - the beautiful calm and open mixolydian part in the album closer 'Adieu' - the use of autotune in the track 'Lügen' (= Lies) and Till still again bringing the same insane intensity we heard in Angst before - how in the song 'Dicke Titten' at one point there is this wonderful clash of the ionian scale brass intro being carefreely played over the phrygian downtuned main riff. So bold-cheeky As you can see the last four tracks of the album are imo def the strongest and among Rammstein's strongest material period. Zeit could be added to it, but that is mainly because of the lyrics. The song deals with our mortality. Should you decide to give it another chance, feel free to let us know what you think! Cheers'

for a guy who has been listening to metal for almost 40 years and i listen and like all genres of metal this was the best explanation i heard from metallica :) and i also saw the video talking about the Black Album and for a guy who listens to all music styles from Grind Core, Death or BlackMetal, symphonic etc etc... I never thought that Metallica had sold out nor did I not like them and I loved the Album and I was happy to see Metal reaching people who said bad things about it since kind of musica and who today became metallers..

Yeah they really gave their own twist to the whole metalcore formula, and had an interesting perception on rhythm, they would shift their beats more than most bands of the era. Things went south for them though, I don't buy the whole "they've matured" narrative, it's fine to just want to make some dad metal for a good payday, and the fact that they still make impactful songs here and there (like Wishing Wells) makes it even more obvious.

Love that kind of metal as well, and I kind of thought he had a good point about how they seem to play that fantasy type metal in a way that just comes off less hokey or corny compared to others. Some can still do it well, but like Hammerfall, he nailed that. They just don't do it the way Blind Guardian can. Also, I don't think I really know Avantasia, so I'm off to go listen to them now and see what I think. I would also put

I agree about Anthrax being the weakest of the big four and having dogshit production. But mate you HAVE to see them live. Its literally the reverse. I saw them this year. They played 13 songs but was easily one of the best shows I've ever witnessed. Most metal bands fail to replicate what they so in the studio live, whereas Anthrax the reverse is true. So tight

Sir, this is truly a great channel!! I’ve been subscribed a long time. I’m not a metal head; I play blues guitar and listen to all sorts of music, but metal is last on the list. The reason I listen (as a practicing Christian that gets tired of F-words and the increasing coarseness of our culture) is because of your encyclopedic knowledge of music and your authenticity. You are always honest. Thank you for your hard work to bring enjoyment and learning to us. I really appreciate it. I’m a family doctor in the inner city. The past three to four years have been a pandemic followed by signing many death certificates of young people dying of fentanyl overdose. Strangely, I look forward to little breaks that take me to unusual places like this in music and the business of music. I don’t comment often anywhere and am not sure why I did here exactly but thank you.
