Something I heard about Raphael figuring out Zorro's identity is because when Zorro sliced the Z into his throat, that was the first time they were actually that close to each other. So Raphael figuring out who Zorro really was, was easy for him.

Finally someone!!! In fact, when they are face to face in that scene and Diego has the sword at his throat and tells him if he would sacrifice 3 men to catch him, it is clearly seen how Raphael lowers his head a little and changes his expression, as if he knew at that moment that It's about Diego de la Vega.

Power vs Rathbone was possibly the best sword fight ever filmed! I'm also a big fan of the 1950's Disney tv series starring Guy Williams (the same fight choreographer as the 1940s film, a lot of things in the 90s film appear to be homages to the series)

It even got nominated for 2 Academy Awards, which is really cool. Zorro is like the Latino version of Batman, which is really cool because the Zorro comics came out first before Batman did in the 1930s. There is a 1920's silent version with Douglas Fairbanks Sr., the most famous is the 1940's version with Tyrone Power and the 1950's Disney TV version with Guy Williams who in the 60's played the Robinson father in the Lost In Space TV show. The 1940's version is my favorite and has many of the cast that was in the Errol Flynn 1938 Adventures of Robin Hood !

There were, and are, many white Spaniards. There was a certain "color awareness" at the time, with Spanish lineage nobility holding greater status than mestizos nobles. Hence a pale skinned daughter was not unreasonable. Zeta Jones is actually Welsh, but she did a good job here. At least Zorro was played by a latino actor. Fun Fact: someone (I forget who) actually kept the severed head of an outlaw in brandy. Truly an excellent movie.

Many reactors have said that they never thought that they would reach the 1K level. Those very same people are now in the 100K+ level of greatness. I'm in it for the long haul. I hope that you will continue on too. I also am a great lover of the swashbucklers. I've lost count on how many times I've watched "The Adventures of Robin Hood", The Scarlet Pimpernel" ('34) and those awesome "Pirates of the Caribbean" films. I'm also a great lover of Zorro, having watched the Disney series starring Guy Williams (1957-1961), and this film with Banderas & Sir Anthony Hopkins. I'm hoping that you would react to "The Sea Hawk" (1940) and "The Three Musketeers" (1973 version) in the future. Again, congratulations, and let's look forward to hitting the 20K mark by next year! 🎊🎉📽❤

Fun Fact: The Mark of Zorro was the INAUGURAL film for United Artists! Also from wiki⤵️ Zorro made his debut in the 1919 novel The Curse of Capistrano, originally meant as a stand-alone story. However, the success of the 1920 film adaptation The Mark of Zorro starring Douglas Fairbanks convinced McCulley to write more Zorro stories for about four decades: the character was featured in a total of five serialized stories and 57 short stories, the last one appearing in print posthumously in 1959, the year after his death. The Curse of Capistrano eventually sold more than 50 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling books of all time. While the rest of McCulley's Zorro stories did not enjoy the same popularity, as most of them were never reprinted until the 21st century, the character also appears in over 40 films and in ten TV series, the most famous being the Disney-produced Zorro series of 1957-1959, starring Guy Williams.

this movie is awesome! I do like this one, it's a lot of fun. Banderas is fine, Zeta-Jones is stunning, and the movie's well made. I'm afraid this Zorro is still #3 in my heart though, behind the Disney series' Guy Williams and Tyrone Power in "The Mark of Zorro". What's more, I believe Disney's 1952 live-action Robin Hood edges out Errol Flynn's 1939 version, better capturing the feel of the old folktales. Disney was just on a roll in the 50s, also putting out the classic "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" in 1954.

There are also VERY STRONG undertones of-COUNT OF MONTY CRISTO I thought, in the beginning, they are even both set in the...1800s. & aspects of the spaghetti westerns, of the 60s he ISNT supposed to be all that young, remember he tells his horse, "yes your getting too old for this, as am I. I agree about how his "sworn enemy" recognised him. I can only assume it was because he was seeing Zorro (the fox) close up & hearing his voice for the 1st time this is the best version of this character put on screen & as Banderas said this is the 1st time a Latin actor has played this part, plus all the story layers work together well, I liked the sense of a new younger Zorro was coming, the father son relationship, and that this was transitional America about to gain another State. its a...ballsy version that doesnt pull punches beautifully photographed, lots of sunsets, with orange & lemon colour palette as Mexican as Californian, great stunts (although over the top at times) well worth seeing.

I recently watched this movie when it was free on KZbin and for the first time, I spotted how Hopkins' Zorro got the injury in the beginning that gave him away. It was early in the fight when he set the trap door. Watch carefully and you'll see his left arm get scratch as he goes down the trap door. For the rest of the opening fight, you can see his costume torn and his arm bleed.

you are 1000% right to say the STORY comes first, it is the bones/structure of it all & the point. one of the rare refreshing things about this film is that it is old school film making, yet with a modern daring ie severed head plus stunts that couldnt be done in 40s Zorro holly wood. another great example of old meets new is SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION where the STORY layers are most important, but they could also show the reality of prison life homosexuality, corruption etc, not possible in say BIRD MAN OF ALCATRAZ from...1960 I think

That part in the movie when Diego stumbles upon Esperanza's portrait, has me thinking that maybe Rafael stole it from the Hacienda before he brought it down. It's kind of creepy when you think that he painted the woman that his soldiers accidentally killed and his daughter he stole. However, I guess is in line with the DEPS. This guy will sink to get what he wants. So either he had it painted, or he stole it. But given the lateness is so exact, I think it was a present from Diego. Perhaps she sat for this. That frozen moment between he and the painting is the first time he has seen her face, I'll be at in painted format, and 20 years, and you can see the heartache. The life he wants had in life that was stolen from him by a jealous rival. Rotting in prison for 20 years because the man who should've been in jail himself 20 times over.

Ironically, Mr. Hopkins and Ms. Zeta-Jones were both Welsh. Amusingly when the Romans first arrived in the south of Wales, they were completely confused by how it was populated by Spaniards speaking a different tongue.

This has always been one of my favorite movies! Fun fact, Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio who wrote this movie also wrote the first four Pirates of the Caribbean movies!

🎶Out of the night when the full moon is bright, comes the horseman known as Zorro! This bold renegade carves a Z with his blade. A Z that stands for Zorro. 🎶Zorro (2x) the fox so cunning and free.🎶Zorro (2x) who makes the sign of the Z.🎶

I don't know if anyone else posted this but Antonio Banderas did 99% of his stunts. I believe the only stunt he didn't do was when he kicked the soldier off of the horse.

The 1940 "Zorro" set the bar and there have been several adaptations (should I put "The Batman" here...) worth a reaction, including this one. For a serious take, the ABC T.V. movie "The Mark of Zorro" (1974) has some amazing star power and for an almost "Airplane" level of fun, "Zorro the Gay Blade" (1981.) (SLASH! SLASH! SLASH!) "What do you think of THAT!?!" "I think it's a number 2 Sénior." "What do you MEAN it's a 2!?! "Can't you see it's plainly a 'Z!?!'"
*THE MASK OF ZORRO* (1998) is glorious, popcorn fun
