@@JamesWiseMagic It is true. First published dates: Zorro: 1919, Batman: 1939. First Zorro movie: 1920. Batman was basically a combination of Zorro and The Shadow (1931). Zorro was more of a Robin Hood style character, steal from the rich to help the poor, while the Shadow was fighting gangsters and had high-tech gadgets.

Zorro, means 'fox', in Spanish. In parts of Spain and Mexico, bats are called 'flying foxes'. Also, Zorro was a serialized comic (think Sunday comic strip) that preceded Batman by nearly 20 years. And he had his cave below his mansion, built in the hills and cliffs of Southern California. But, the motif focused on social class differences. So, Zorro did indeed come before Batman. Batman owes a ton of reference to the Latin Fox. Also, Zorro may have been inspired by another class vigilante, the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Having never seen this movie before, I now understand why in high school all my friends had a crush on Catherine Zeta-Jones. Also... had no issue with the casting. This movie does a decent job at telling Mexican history at this time. The ruling class was European and the Spanish had heavy influence in Mexican politics at the time. I don't have to suspend disbelief with the casting choices. A quick google search shows this movie took place in 1821 which is late stage Mexican War of Independence meaning Europeans had a critical role in the Mexican aristocracy. It's 100% plausible that someone of Spanish/European descent could have been Old Zorro in this time period.

Batman wouldn't be Batman without Zorro. The character of Zorro was the literal inspiration for Batman and Zorro was made back in 1919. The similarities are so massive the original creators of Batman were so inspired by Zorro along with Sherlock Holmes and I think a Leonardo Di Vinci sketch that they created Batman. Zorro is my favorite hero.

I recently rewatched The Mask of Zorro and I was amazed how well written it is. Every scene has setup and payoff that largely focus on characters and their motivations. I always loved it as a kid but I had always assumed it wouldn't hold up today. I was wrong, it still holds up. You jump straight to the action and it never lets up. I used to care more about the moments with Zorro in the mask but I've grown to appreciate Don Diego de la Vega's story and tragedy the most.

Nope. They went to watch The Mark of Zorro, not the Mask. There were two of those, a silent one from 1920 with Douglas Fairbanks and a better known one from 1940 with Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone. Both are based on the original pulp novel The Curse of Capistrano by Johnston McCulley from 1919. Zorro isn't like Batman, Batman is like Zorro. Both those movies are great if you're into Batman and are better portrayals of Batman than certain recent ones. :Edit: Three, if you could a TV movie with Frank Langella and Ricardo Montalban from the 70s.

Joaquin Murrieta, the brother of Alejandro, was an actual figure, referred to as "The Robin Hood of the West"; a partial inspiration for Zorro. Several inspiration and references are in this film. The prison escape, possibly from "The Count of Monte Crisco". Obviously, Bruce Wayne might have used ideas for Batman from the "Mark of Zorro" film he saw on "that night". The burning "Z" in the hills is very "Bat-Signal". Interesting parallels between Zorro and Elena, a la Batman and Catwoman. Crazy enough, the idea of an elder Zorro, teaching a street urchin his way - Batman Beyond!! Your thoughts...

Zorro started as a serialized magazine novel by Johnston McCulley in 1919 called "The Curse of Capistrano." It was supposed to be a stand alone story and Zorro reveals his identity at the end. It was made into a silent film in 1920 produced and starring Douglas Fairbanks and renamed "The Mark of Zorro." The huge success of the film and demand for more Zorro stories led McCulley to ignore the ending of his original story (except maybe the first sequel from what I remember) and write over 60 more stories about Zorro. There was a sequel with Fairbanks about the son of Zorro (Don Q) in 1925 and then the first talking Zorro film in 1936 ("The Bold Caballero") made by someone else. Movie serials of Zorro didn't start until 1937 with the first one featuring a "modern day" decedent and then one with the original Zorro in 1939. The film that Bruce usually sees is the 1940 version of "The Mark of Zorro" starring Tyrone Power. The idea that they saw Zorro the night Bruce's parents were killed came from Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" and then in his "Batman: Year One." Before that it was an unnamed film (an unnamed Brando film in one version).

California at the time was owned by Spain, so Zorro was Spanish.

In many canons, the film Bruce and his parents saw before leaving the theater on the night they were murdered was Zorro. A fact many newer adaptation overlook.

This movie I feel is very underrated! It is incredible! Practical effects. Amazing fights. Incredible story telling. Well rounded character and acting! Some of the most beautiful shots in film. The SCORE by James Horner Is amazing! It’s epic. To me it was one of the last of its time. You don’t see movies like this anymore. The industry desperately needs films like this again.

I think the setting for Zorro is Spanish California (which, according to Wikipedia, is the period 1769-1821, and in contrast to the subsequent period of 1821-1846, referred to as Mexican California) in Pueblo de Los Angeles, which would eventually become LA (thus after 1781). (Of course, it was all conceived of and written by an American pulp author, Johnston McCulley, so... But Zorro's pretty notable for being one of the earliest prototypes for what would eventually become the superhero genre. (I think the Scarlet Pimpernel might have been written earlier..?))

I loved this movie. Still do. Even though the sequel is not so good, I still enjoy it too (gasp). I even read the book that came out in 2005 by Isabel Allende. Translated into English of course. It is likely a much better read in its original Spanish, but still a fun Zorro story. I miss stories like this. The Shadow with Alec Baldwin and Ian McKellen before he got famous in America. Classic. Wish they'd bring back the OG superhero, Scarlet Pimpernel.

Zorro was one inspiration for the Batman character...though the tropes of wealthy vigilante were inspired from characters which came before, but I think the root character of inspiration was the Scarlet Pimpernel. Modern-day comic book characters were inspired by Pulp Fiction Magazines, and the Detective characters were the other inspirational element - combine that with Wes Roland's the Bat. I used to have a list of all the inspirational characters, including the Ghost Detective (aka the Green Ghost) -- note: tribute was made to this character from Batman the animated series - but called him the Gray Ghost, Sherlock Holmes, Dick Tracy, Night Hawk (Thurston Kyle), The Shadow, Zorro, The Phantom, The Lone Ranger, The Black Bat

The thing with her calling him father at the end... . It's mostly her recognizing that he's dying, and that her "father's" death wasn't his fault. Yes, he killed the man, but Raphael brought it on himself, and Diego fought for her sake as well. So, having lost one father, and seemingly gained another, only to lose him right away as well...she called Diego "father" so that he could pass on in peace. I don't think she really felt it fully at that time, but I believe she cared about him enough to be able to say it for his sake.
