None of the main cast is supposed to be "Mexican" other than Antonio Banderas's character - they're all nobles/wealthy people from Spain , which means they're pretty much white Europeans (maybe the wife, if Hopkins married a local girl). It would have been a tiny bit better if Hopkins had a Spanish accent but whatever, lol. This is a great movie - it doesn't try to be anything but an exciting action adventure and it achieved that perfectly. Witty one-liners, awesome stunts, charismatic lead actors, a villain worth hating - it has it all, plus an emotional zinger with the stolen daughter sideplot. Everyone was having fun, that was obvious.

Smarter than the avg. poster, you know some history. Mexico still has a class based culture that the elites tend to have more Spanish Blood then native. In this day Dons might take a hispanic wife but few were what we think of as hispanic today.

This is such a fun movie. Pretty sure this was the film that launched Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Hollywood career.

As a Mexican, growing up I was smart enough to know a lot of these people weren't Mexican, but there are so many non Mexicans it blurred out who was who and I thought for years, and I mean years that Catherine Zeta Jones was at least hispanic because I could buy her the most growing up. And then she was in Traffic as well as Helena Ayala two years later. Blew my mind a few years ago when i realized she is not one of us; I still think this movie is so much fun.

The thing about it is being Mexican doesn’t exclude having backgrounds in any other nationality. There are white Mexicans, indigenous Mexicans, even Afro-Mexicans. Most Mexicans have Spanish/Europe ancestry

For the longest time I thought Antonio Banderas was Mexican, but I recently found out he's actually Spanish (as in from Spain).

Most historical sword stage fight choreographers say there are 2 perfect sword fights in film history. The Catherine zeta Jones vs Antonio Banderas fight is one of them. The other is in "the princess bride"

Such a fun movie! The only one I've ever seen at a drive-in, too. Me after watching "Ant-Man": "Hmmm...a retired superhero gifts a younger man who used to be a thief his superhero identity, and the ex-thief romance's the ex-hero's estranged daughter...Where have I seen this before?" It also kind of inspired "Batman: Beyond."

Don Rafael and Anthony Hopkins character were meant to be Spanish pretty sure. They were part of the ruling class which is why Rafael called Hopkins a traitor to his country and his class

Well, back in these days, the Dons would be mostly spanish colonists ä, not Mexicans and Spain has always been very diverse genetically and ethnically (native Basques; immigrated Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, Berbers and other North African tribes…) so TECHNICALLY the casting isn‘t that much problematic 😅

An underrated movie with a great cast, plot, and stunts. I particularly like the choice of locale for the final battle and how much of Zorro's training comes back to help him in his final confrontation with Captain Love who is just swinging madly in anger (which leads to his death). The villains also had some complexity to them, particularly Rafael. I like that Captain Love chose not to use the gun at the end (despite him being shown quite capable of hitting targets out of the air at distance) as it showcased both his arrogance and twisted honor.

I saw this film in theaters with my grandma in that year 1998 when I was 18 years old and now in my 42 I still love this classic The Mask of Zorro starring by Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins. The music video of the film was the song "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" single by Marc Anthony and Tina Arena. Thank you Jimmy great reaction and don't forget reacts the sequel The Legend of Zorro.

One of my fav films! A great scene is the one with the fight in the court yard when Zorro (Banderes) flips atop it and fights everyone that tries to mount the table, the table being a circle show the culmination of his training, as his world contracts he takes on greater numbers of opponents, great visual story telling.

Same. I'm pretty sure that was the first movie I watched in theatres. I was obsessed with the style and aesthetic. I went as Zorro for Halloween that same year. And then I made both of my friends watch it when it came out on VHS, like multiple times. One of the best memories.

The Dons are all supposed to be Spanish… colonists and/or even nobles! That’s why Rafael returned to Spain for 2 decades… BECAUSE he was from there! If I remember correctly, Diego (the original Zorro; in this adaptation Anthony Hopkins) is also Spanish in most versions

Anthony Hopkins’s Zorro, Don Diego Del a Vega and Don Rafael Montero are actually not Mexican. They are Spanish aristocrats that live in Mexico whose business is trade. Actually Zorro was a TV Show back in the day in the 1950’s and Anthony Hopkins character is the Zorro from that television show, and this film is a sequel to that television show. They copied that from the first Misson Impossible film where it is a sequel to the TV Series and the main character from that TV Series, Jim Phelps, is an older version of himself played by Jon Voight.

Actually Zorro characters dates to the 20s when he started as a book character (just like Conan the barbarian) and then got some movies adaptations before the Disney series from the 50s (yes the Guy Williams one). But you're right, the movie is a sequel to that tv series.

Jimmy (and everyone else reading this): do yourself a favor and watch the very original "Mark Of Zorro", one of the greatest silent movies, spectacular stunts, hilarious, brilliant script and the OG action hero: Douglas Fairbanks Sr. It's on You Tube for free. It was the inspiration for both Batman AND Superman. I saw it in a theatre a few years ago, the audience was gasping and cheering and laughing. You watch that (and all of the iconic Fairbanks movies from the 20s: Mark Of Zorro, The Three Musketeers, Robin Hood, Thief Of Baghdad, The Black Pirate (first technicolor hit) and his other hits from the 20s (The Gaucho, Don Q: Son Of Zorro, and The Iron Mask), you watch those and you see where all the other action movies ever since come from He's the archetype. Widely imitated, never equaled.
