The beautiful, majestic horses, maintained at a funeral dirge pace, the hundreds and hundreds of soldiers... the thousands and thousands of people there in respectful silence and sorrow... the hundreds and hundreds of years' history and tradition... the planning, the training, the discipline, all come together at that moment before the world in honor of and mourning for the monarch who had represented them all for so long... It was a sight and sound to behold, spectacular and magnificent and never to come again 🇬🇧

On the day it was announced that the Queen had died I felt as if I had been waiting my whole life for this to happen. It still came as a numbing moment to hear it announced. But the lady was seen off in a glorious style only we British can achieve. I went and read my oath after the funeral just to remind myself what I had sworn to do back in 1961 on joining the Army and that it was still an oath to her heirs and successors and now the King. I saw or rather heard the crunch of marching feet at her father funeral on a winters day in 1952, holding my grandfathers hand. I was too small to see the procession, I only heard the beat of the drum and the crunch of boots. I was only seven. I was proud to wear my cap badge with HER crown and proud to serve her in my own small way as a soldier.

I wonder if the Queen herself had specifically requested that the police riders up front be all women, Audrey Christie...she was, after all, a very experienced horsewoman herself. When watching videos of Changing the Guard I've always been impressed by the horses of the Met police, which to my untrained eye seem much better behaved than the ones in the Household Cavalry. But this was perfection itself. Many thanks to MMView for the lovely video!
