I do remember the time CoF was blamed as Bacstreet boys or what ever. It was named by these "original" black metal fans, who could not tolerate this great production quality and exceptional makeups and clothes. Same was with Dimmu Borgir, until Enthrone Darkness Triuphant album, when they really started to sell records. And making money ofc. Same was with CoF with album Dusk and Her embrace. Epic album. And the conserts were something else ffs. Was on Dusk... tour on Tavastia Helsinki and it was packed. One of the best gigs I´ve been or seen. For this kind of metal, there is another band that never got as big, Hecate Enthroned, but very similiar music. Screeching vocals and very, very cool riffs and "piano" sets. Go check them out too.

The CoF hate from the black metal community has always been there. When the band started out they were marketed as "Black Metal", but in reality they blended some black metal elements together with the about to be popular "Gothic"-Genre and slapped a nice horror theme on everything. According to Dani he´s always been a big horror fan and was even starring in a horror movie in the early 2000s. The band found a niche for themselves that was commercially successful and commercial success at the time was everything the idea of black metal stood against. Similar to the band Dimmu Borgir they acted as gateways to the more extreme genres for fans that just started enjoying that sort of music.

@@andrewkemp2238 I never saw them as gothic metal, really. That stuff I associate more with, like, Lacuna Coil, For/My/Pain, Entwined, etc. Slower, singing vocals, more typical song structures, etc. Cradle of Filth have always been more on the extreme metal side of things, flirting with different extreme genres and melding them together.

Hey Love this channel with splendid actions/reactions between a true metalhead and an open minded pianist. I am a LP-collector and in my archive I find several LPs where I only have the first LP. It means that after buying and listened I choiced to buy from other bands ...... Actually I dont have much symphonic metal. I dont think its the best way to go if you like example Bathory, 1Burzum or Darkthrone ...... Therefore I only have the 1. album with Cradle of Filth played once .... . Many of my LPs back in time (all 1. edition) which I name as wrong purchases they have really got some high prices. I really praise that we have different taste in music :) !! Extra note I bought the first 2 albums with "Rotting Christ". The last year I have checked "the so called one or few albums in my collection". When checking some news from this band I surrendered me to especially their excellent album "Rituals" from 2016 packed with great emotions, thunder and fire. If I have not seen this video I have not reheard CoF again. Still I dont like their music as well as Dimmu borgir .....

not to defend CoF, I'm not a fan but similarly to how nobody sings operatically naturally, you have to train your voice to do that, nobody does brutal vocals naturally, but they are a mode of performance that one inhabits in a theatrical or other sense to storytell. I understand the point about it being seemingly at odds to do a beastly voice and then orate like 20 Shakespearian stanzas over blastbeats (not a fan of this band) but essentially this is the beauty-and-the-beast, romantic, very gothic point of this band, right? How can a monster be so articulate? How can something ugly be beautiful? How can something searing be also melodic? They're like a vampiric kind of sexy-black metal thing, after all, right? And to the extent that this band was successful it was because they have a balance about that extremity and more accessible aspect to them that metal listeners resonated with in the 90s and 00s. A lot of crossover appeal to women audiences much like a lot of gothic metal of the era also accomplished (paradise lost, my dying bride, theatre of tragedy, the gathering, all use bands in European territories). So something about this screechy guy going on about her ghost in the fog was really appealing to a whole developing audience for this nuance between extremity and accessibility. As a side note, perhaps you should show and share the record cover before you play the record so Judson has as least as much of a chance as a listener that bought those albums back in the day to get the band's aesthetic and perspective, isn't that part of the experience?
