I don't listen to Megadeth a ton much anymore because they aren't really heavy enough for most of my moods lately, but this is one of my go to songs when I do. The radio station here only ever played Symphony of Destruction and Trust, which are great songs, but I never really had much interaction with them otherwise until I adopted the smartphone era. This song is one of the songs I liked from the start. Prince of Darkness is the other one. Simple, but so goddamn good. I love the irony of Peace Sells being the song that Megadeth was playing on stage at Woodstock 99 when the other stage was being razed. Really hard to beat that.

12:48 as opposed to thinking with your little head? lol Jokes aside, I’m interpreting this song - and the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde - through Freud’s theory of the unconscious mind, which many here probably know. Hyde is the embodiment of the “id”, the intrinsic force that whispers in our ears to satisfy our intrinsic needs and desires in ways that grant instant gratification. We learn from our parents and society that these behaviors are bad and that good morals and ethics must be observed and upheld. This, Freud called the “superego”, the proverbial angel to the shoulder companion id. Jekyll can serve as the portrayal of the “ego” - the mediator between these powers, who sometimes grants more leeway to one side more than the other, in the way needs and desires are exercised. To me, the song seems to be narrated by the ego sweating bullets, ‘cause it’s being overrun by the id. That is just one possible interpretation though, and sorta what you were getting at as well. Interesting topic and conversation.

Thanks Judson. Megadeth and Mustaine is indeed much more interesting musically. Which probably is exactly why they never reached exactly the same heights as Metallica. Not that Metallica hasn't done interesting things, but Mustaine's always been a step ahead of them when it comes to song composition, especially since they lost Cliff.

It's funny that Judson points to Mustaine as an influence for death metal vocals. Many bands cite "Rust in Peace" as an influence for guitar work, but I think Slayer played a bigger role in the spawning of death metal as a whole, especially vocals. Obviously, thrash at its core is combining heavy metal and hardcore punk, which has a duality of more melodic vocals (Metallica and Megadeth lean into this a bit more, even getting sort of bluesy on rare occasions), and more rough, extreme vocals (Slayer, Venom, and maybe Anthrax). It is hard to pinpoint where screaming exactly came from because so many bands were doing different things all around the globe. Let's see what Richard has to say for which album is truly the first death album... lmao Day 13 of asking for Diablo Swing Orchestra. "Balrog Boogie?"

It's not a feeling. It's the state where you hear what you're playing, and the listener is seperated from the player, and linked with the player in a way that when the listener keeps listening the player keeps playing. And why the result makes sense is - in very short - because one is not the avatar that is playing. This state represents a liberation (because it contains a universal property, the Trinity) with intersubjective properties, i.e. with space-transcending potential - ultimately simply a geometric fact. And because “people” were invented, the above facts can have a “poignant” effect. Like me right now. It really seems like the communication is working. Hey, just let the musical idea (listener~/~player) unfold! The rest does..., well, who actually does the rest? The only logical answer is to be blessed, which is a completely normal phenomenon. Please excuse my offensive urge for clarity. Once the information is through, it's good, right. I say yes to Judson's intro. What he says is true. Jedenfalls spitzen Angelegenheit hier. Nope… this is the original 1992 version with he original Nick Menza drums. You’re probably thinking of the lame AF remastered version with re-recorded drums. You can always tell the remasters because they boosted the hell out of the drums to bring them more to the front and they also have different sonic and tonal qualities that sound out of place to everyone who have been listening to Megadeth since the beginning.
