So sad to see that ship like that. Hope they do something smart to solve the problem. Thanks again for posting great videos. WW2HH

What a great experience in my life to take the train/subway from Athens to Piraiéus and went on the ferry, like the one described. For only a few Drachmas (no Euros back then) and traveling ‘deck class’, to Heraklion in Crete, and later back. Wished I could go back in time to those days!
@VicStefanu3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comments, I remember those days well. I came back to Greece in 1980 and took a similar ferry to Heraklion, Crete, for what today would be $3.. Back then they had a class 'C' ticket for $3 which meant, literally, the top deck and ON the deck for the duration of the trip... incredible memories indeed..

This ship started it's career in the 70's than it got sold to Ventouris sea lines in the early 80's or 90's than it got sold again to two different fleets that they are bankrupted than it got sold again to Ventouris sea lines and named Saint George / Agios Georgios so it's 50 or 60 years old I've traveled with it than it stopped it's trips for unknown reasons got renamed by the coast guard Panagia Tinou. By the time it stayed there it becamed less safe with it's floating mechanism, than in 2016 one of the pipes for the ballast tanks broke down and flooded the engine room the ship started to list to it's right side until the cargo deck's door reached the surface of the sea and flooded the cargo deck. Both the coast guard and the tugboats tried to bring it back afloat and they managed it than the ship got towed to Turkey's scrapyard and becamed nails ( Spoiler alert The ship wasn't able to be on schedule or good rated )

The Greeks have the largest merchant marine in the world. If I'm wrong then second largest. They know exactly what to do with this ship. It's easy for them. This is tied in the courts.

Very interesting videoclip of the sinking ship Pireas, Πειραιάς berthed in the port of Pireas on the Mediterranean Sea located in Greece. I am assuming that the owner of this ship has not acted in righting this ship either because it is not cost effective, or the owners were not entirely sure how to correct this problem. Would you know who is the owner of this ship, and if they have tried to sell this ship to another shipping line such as the Hellenic shipping lines who may have dry dock facilities nearby so that they can retrofit this ship. Another idea would be to consider retrofitting this ship into a floating casino if they would be able to right this ship and stop the leaking so that this ship could safely float. I think that this ship could be put to many other good uses if the right party took over salvaging and maintaining this ship.

Hi Michael, the ship is too old to be used in anything except as an artificial reef for fish... This ship was once confiscated by the workers that were owed salaries and it is now not clear who the owner is..

What ever happened to that ferry did it eventually seek? How did they keep it afloat if it was taking on water?

The ship was temporarily repaired, then taken to a local scrapyard and scrapped in 2017..

What a dangerous situation Vic. No wonder they were not keen for your filming it but let's hope that the authorities will now sit up and do something about it ? It's easy for me to see that some kind of remedial action taken now would be a lot cheaper than the potential huge cost of a disastrous whole vessel recovery operation that might have to be taken at some future date to say nothing of the resulting catastrophic environmental damage !
@VicStefanu8 жыл бұрын
The curious thing is that this happened a few months back and no one knows how they will fix this huge problem. As you said, if the ship sinks (or rolls over) completely, the cost will be exponential but the authorities (as I have been told) are now chasing the owner of the ship.. things like these take for ever to fix here in Greece..

In the 1970s the port was much smaller, and there was a small triangular shaped grass park about 3 mins walk away, where me and all the backpackers who disembarked late from Naxos ferry slept! In the morning I took the underground to Omonia Square walked to a hostel called Hotel Diana, where you could get a bed in a fabulous old 1920s house on many floors, or even on the roof for 50p a night.

Ships that passed in the night?
@VicStefanu7 жыл бұрын
I was always wondering how they could sleep with all that noise.. I left Greece in 1977 but still remember the disapproving looks from the Greeks...lol... I also remember how envious I was not one of them (even though I was 10 or 12 years old) and how much I wanted to travel like them... Of course I had no idea that (many) years later and after 145 countries, I would have spent over 3,500 days on the road!!

I suspect that the owner of record has simply walked away from this vessel, leaving the Port Authority to deal with it. Thanks, Vic.
@VicStefanu8 жыл бұрын
ANd this is exactly what has happened here, the ship owner went bankrupt and the ship will probably stay there for years to come..
