When the comics created the beginning of this story/plotline, it was amazing. But like all stories that are told for too long, this plot waned terribly over time. By the time they got to the plotline of the Greek Gods showing up, it felt terribly desperate and ridiculous to keep this plot going. It should have already ended long ago. But they just kept dragging it on for another comic and another buck. They kinda did this with the Marvel Zombies, too. They need to learn when to end a plotline and go to the next one, so it doesn't become so tiresome. Nothing against Comic Stories narrating or editing this. He does an excellent job. This is against the comics continuing a story too long for the sake of greed.

Simple answer, to make it a fight. If they showed the Greek Gods at the height of their powers none of the Justice League would be much of a threat. Superman and maybe Wonder Woman are the only ones that would last for any length of time. The embodiment of good, hope and justice isn't going to turn evil because of the death of a loved one. Batman is cold, callous and completely abandoned his friend in a time where he really needed him leading to his decline. Wonder woman just pushes Superman further and basically just wants to get railed which isn't something she ever usually does once he's with Lois. Hal has the strongest Will of any Lantern and yet joins the fear core. The only one truly in character is Barry where he struggles with his loyalties and his need to do good and is the Angel on Clark's shoulder.
