i see a lot of people in the coments talking about how tartarus and the elysian fields are like heaven and hell, i think the diference here is that people going to those places in the greek mythos were the exeption, if you were exeptionally good you went to the fields and if you were exeptionally bad you would be send to tartarus. the great thing about this mythology is that it acknowleges that most human beeings are neither good or bad, but instead have good deeds or bad deeds that woluld shape your afterlife in hades (the general population part), for instance Sisyphus was tortured, but if i remember well he wasn't in tatarus per se, insted he was in the most broad part of hades

@LaVerdadEsMuyCatólica Did you really just attempt to relate the theory of evolution to religion? A theory which is proven more true every single day. The more we discover the more true it becomes. In fact scientists can and have made actual predictions about undiscovered things BECAUSE of their understanding of Darwin's theory, which have since been discovered to be true. Google the naked mole-rat. If you knew anything about anything, you would delete your comment out of embarrassment🤦♂️

A bit disappointed that the good prof did not correct them with the name of Hercules. The ancient Greek name for this most famous of Greek heroes was Heracles. Hercules was the Roman name of this hero. It's like using the Latin name Ulysses as the Greek name of the hero that was actually called Odysseus by the Greeks.

I kinda want to call BS on this “expert”. This may be case of those who don’t know, teach lol. Plus, he was WAY too uncomfortable with any aspect related to sex, accept for the phallus that spawned Aphrodite. When Jim mentioned if the Greek gods were represented in other cultures, “the professor” failed to mention to Jim (who clearly didn’t know) that the planets were named after the romanized Greek gods. I feel like Jim would’ve liked that as a dinner fun fact instead of... whatever that was.
@ruthschuster93384 жыл бұрын
I’m sure the professor knows leagues more about the subject than I do or will, so I shouldn’t really judge, I’m just being petulant because he brought zero entertainment value to what is normally very entertaining, watching Jim learn about things.

Stephen Fry has written books about the subject and I haven't bought them yet for some reason. Does anybody know whose books are funnier? I enjoy mister Martin's wit and this episode made me want to read more, especially if there are Hercules' crossdressing escapades and such less obvious adventures, but I can't afford all of the books right away. Maybe one from each guy for starters? Other recommendations?

There is a version in existence of "Hercules in New York" with Arnold's real voice undubbed. Wait, who is this expert? Yes, there is an equivalent to Heaven and Hell in Greek mythology. Everyone who dies goes to the Underworld, presided over by Hades (Hades in the name of the god, NOT the place). There are sections of the Underworld, including the Elysian Fields, which is more or less Heaven and Tartarus, which is more or less Hell.

Seriously, Kratos is not meant as an analogue for Hercules. Ares tricks him into killing his family to sever his ties, Hercules just loses his shit occasionally and murders people. I hope they didn't pay that guy for his testimony. Other than that, a lot of oversimplifications, particularly regarding the Titans and Athena. She wasn't just born out of the head of Zeus, he was having splitting headaches after consuming Metis. They grew so bad that he went to the forge of Hephaestus, who put Zeus's head on the anvil and cracked it open, freeing Athena. Seriously, this "expert" doesn't impress.

TIL: Intercrural intercourse refers to fucking someone's thighs (non-penetrative sex). This was a really interesting discussion, though I wanted to hear more about Hercules's crossdressing adventures. It's true that sexuality was normalized until Christianity fucked everything up and now everyone just has repressed and puritan attitudes towards sex.
