Only breathe through your mouth. Breathing in the onion's gas through your nose causes your glands to react, which causes the burning. I usually just chew gum obnoxiously while grating onions because it naturally makes me breathe through my mouth.

Okay, but how can I grate an onion without making myself cry like a baby (if I'm grating not a sweet onion)?
