Robin Williams did the same. It was pretty common for comedic actors from the '80s and early '90s to switch to movies then after a while they'd switch from comedies to more dramatic roles. I think that the reason for this was, at the time, being a movie actor was where the money and prestige was and comedic actors weren't perceived as being serious actors, unlike dramatic actors. Plus, there was almost no way that you're getting a Best Actor/Actress Oscar as anything but an actor in a dramatic role.

I have a story related to In The Army Now. One of the Drill Sergeants, when Bones and Jack arrive at Fort Sill for Basic, Drill SGT Humphreys, was later a 1SG then promoted to Battalion SGM at my battalion at Fort Riley, KS in the early 2000s. I was a field artillery lieutenant and the LTs' office was near his SGM office. In that office he had a framed movie poster of In The Army Now with Pauly Shore along with his awards and accolades along the wall. I remember every morning I walked into the Battalion HQ building, I would hear him in his office down the hall chewing out some EM, while 3 other soldiers were sitting outside his office. NCOs will say that after he had back surgery and on medical leave, he would still be out in front of his home doing yard work.

His story goes that one day he looked at himself in the mirror and couldn't stand it any more. His entire job was to "break brave young men down so they could be built back up" and it made his life angry all the time. That day he decided he couldn't do it any more. It just made me think about what he said when you talked about your DS being angry. That kind of perpetual anger eating away at someone until it ruins them as well.

i had a similar experience as Sean with one of my DSs. i was E-1 Private when i went to basic, one of my DSs got promoted to SFC (E-7) during the cycle. after basic went to 1st duty station after a couple years deployed Bosnia, got promoted to SGT (E-5), came PCSed to Germany, 9/11 happened, was supposed to go to Kosovo but my overseas extension got denied, so had to come back stateside and was sent to Fort Benning. got assigned to this committee that tested new optics, LASERs, weapon mounts, etc and then created training materials for those items and went TDY to teach units how to use them. so, 3 of us from the committee had to go to NTC to do a week of training for the O/Cs so they would have a basic understanding of the gear the rotational units would be using. during one of my blocks of instruction i was looking in the audience and i was like "holy shit, that's one of my DSs". during a break i went up to him and was like "hey SFC Mackenzie, were you a DS at D 1-50 Infantry in 97?" he was, but all his buddies clowned him like "OHHH SHIT, one of your basic trainees has almost caught up to you in rank" (i was promoted to SSG (E-6) shortly afterwards too). bonus story from this, we got a free day in Vegas on the Army's money from that trip cause turns out the friday was a training holiday, so we only had to do 4 days of instruction instead of 5 and our flights were not until saturday...so, we decided we could save the army some money by staying on-post at Nellis AFB instead of the hotel in Barstow. and the fact that it was 10 minutes from the Vegas strip...well, that was just a happy coincidence.
