Punk is punk. I think subgenres can be kinda unnecessary. Pop Punk, Punk Rock, Garage Punk, Hardcore Punk, etc. I mean sure, it can be useful to separate the differences in their music but in a same overall genre. But I just think its unnecessary. Also, the shit about them being sellouts is stupid. Just because they got signed with big record label doesn't make them sellouts. And, just because they gained access to better equipment, more resources and they aren't sleeping on the streets eating from 7 Elevens does not make them fucking sellouts.

When I listen to some punk song here on KZbin, I come across this sell-out punk rock debate from time to time, particularly on the Green Day songs. So the usual stance of a punk fan is that when a band signs to a major label, it is *not punk* anymore, or just doesn't follow the basic punk doctrine. So why does this sound plain stupid to me? A punk listener usually loves when their friends like the same music as they love, as is the case with the listener of no matter what genre. A music genre has a tendency to spread. So signing to a major label gives a band opportunity to be heard by a wider audience. And I see nothing wrong with that. On the contrary, that's the way an artist should go. So if everyone started listening to punk, punk wouldn't be "punk" anymore. This is so fucking absurd. Stop following this principle without thinking. A band and an individual can be themselves always no matter how big the audience is and whether they signed to a major label. And that is the most artistic and punk thing artist a punk performer can do. If they stop being themselves and start producing commercial music, that's the whole other thing, and I do not support it. But stop being full of shit and thinking what Green Day is, and what Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre really are 'cause you never met them. Neither did I. My opinion is that they create what the fuck they want and regardless of me not really liking the last few albums, I do not state that they are bad from artistic perspective, just not my thing, even though I like a few tracks.
@Capnsensible803 жыл бұрын
Often in the pre-digital age when a band signed to a major they lost a lot of control of their direction. Their creative direction was stifled, they no longer had full say over what songs went on the albums, which would be singles etc. That and punk music generally comes from a place of angst. Hard to be angsty when you're living the good life. Punk is DIY, it's in opposition to corporate greed and corruption. Buying in (or selling out) to those exact corporations is obviously a contradiction of the punk ethos. Of course the punk lifestyle is hard and trying. No one wants to live touring in broken down vans struggling to afford food and a place to crash forever, and they shouldn't have to. Just sayin' I think you're fundamentally misunderstanding why commercial success=not punk is a common sentiment. You need to know what punk *is* before you can understand why people say commercial success is what punk *isn't* All that said, fuck labels. Good music is good music. No longer like the direction a band is going? Fine, but to shit on them for it is petty and childish.
