This is why I'm so glad that NJ allowed their local medical directors to use a relaxed spinal immobilization protocol. We used to have to drag EVERYBODY out onto a backboard and they would be screaming all the way and then lash them to this hard, flat piece of plastic. And this was supposed to protect their spine. Now, we can put a collar on them (often bad enough) and say, "Maam, can you get yourself out of the car without pain?" If they can, they get out and sit on the stretcher with no pain and no extra damage. It makes everyone feel a whole lot better. As my last trauma refresher instructor said, "what used to be crap EMS is now good EMS. Go figure!" Also, the NJOEMS did not actually decide to use the relaxed protocols. That would require making a decision. They left the decision to the local medical directors. Typical Trenton BS!

@@IfYouHaveTo-Ask Actually, we are using the Reeves and scoops more often these days, along with the stair chair. We upgraded to a powered stretcher which is wonderful, but too heavy to take up and down stairs, so we use a stair chair for a responsive patient or a Reeves for an unresponsive one to get them to the stretcher. I'm getting too old and the patients are getting too heavy to keep doing things the old way. Since we won't be leaving them on the backboard, we use the scoop to get them off the ground since we don't have to roll them as much and can slip the scoop out from under them easily once they are on the stretcher.

And if it had gotten stuck in 3rd or 4th gear I probably would have driven it to the shop in that gear, but I couldn't drive at highway speed in 2nd gear, so I put my hazard lights on and drove to the next set of shops (a bit under the speed limit), found a part of the parking lot without anyone (for easy tow truck access), parked it, and called for a tow. Also, it's a manual, so you just hit the clutch, which DISCONNECTS THE ENGINE FROM THE TRANSMISSION, AND THUS THE DRIVETRAIN, then hit the brakes while holding down the clutch. Now, once you've come to a stop, turn off the ignition, and you've safely come to a stop WITHOUT EVEN LOSING POWER STEERING! Genius, right?

1:30 there is a real situation that can be similar, in diesel cars. It is called "runaway diesel", in short, the engine (usually "helped" by the turbo) has so much pressue that when the exhaust goes out, fuel is automatically taken in (even with the accelaration pedal off), and it goes in a loop to higher and higher revs (sometimes it will even suck in the oil from the turbo lines and use that as fuel). If you are unlucky enough so that you can't put it in neutral (like a broken clutch, or heck, a broken stick shift) the car will continue to go and accelerate no matter what, up until the engine explodes. The engine will not stop even if you take the contact off, because at high revs, the battery is no longer needed, since the compression alone will ignite the fuel. This happened to my bmw e46 (due to a broken oil line to the turbo), but clutch and brakes were fine and I did managed to stop the car (after going from 20 miles/h to 100 miles/h in a few seconds). The engine was still going, but I've used my fire extinguisher to starve it of oxigen, and it died off (CO2 fire extinguishers are mandatory in cars in some parts of Europe). Now, the fact that the car in the show was not a diesel, yeah, that doesn't make any sense tbh, since petrol car's fuel is not regulated by the rpm. Also for that to happen, you would need to not only get a runaway diesel, but also to have a bad clutch. Brakes won't help if you can't put it in neutral, since they will get too hot after a few seconds at that sort of power, and will be useless.

Apparently even with his leg off the pedal the car kept accelerating Break we’re working I think but somehow the engine was overpowering it and the o lay the breaks did was slow it down to around 60mph or so, so how the kid was saved was by using the breaks to slow down the car to around 60-70mph then hit the emergency break a few seconds before hitting the truck to slow it down further, hit the back of the moving truck and then slowly slow down the truck, the car was still going and burning rubber once it hit the back of the truck so they had to completely disconnect power This is from what I remember of that scene so I could be horribly wrong and eitherway it’s still completely bullshit overall, but yknow, clarifying some details

Whatever your profession, if there's a show that features it, the reaction will be very similar… Hollywood just puts drama way above accuracy (even in cases like Apollo 13 (the movie) where the story has TONS of drama built-in, they still try to fuck around with stuff…)

Reminds me of an episode of Lois and Clark where Jimmy Olsen was in a car with no brakes and a stuck accelerator. Superman flies in, sits in the seat next to him while Olsen is panicking and then just reaches over and switches off the ignition.👍😻 I know they wrote this👆 because it would be riveting, dramatic and sensational, but obviously doing something less exciting but sensible is plenty memorable if I can bring that easily to mind 30 years on!

@@johns7734 I've heard, that in the USA u don't get teached how to drive a manual car for the drivers license, is that right? I'm German and in Germany the driving teachers don't have to teach how to drive manual since one or two years and I don't know how good that really is, what's your opinion about this?
@johns77344 жыл бұрын
@@eintyp9201 In the US, at least in my state, you are tested in whatever car you bring to the test, as long as it has a center hand brake and the examiner can reach the shifter. Very few people bring a manual to the test since that makes it easier to fail. I actively enjoy driving a manual, except in stop and go traffic. However, there are so few of them on the road in the US anymore, you don't really need to know how. My opinion is that the cars keep getting smarter and smarter and the drivers keep getting dumber and dumber! That's not a good trend.
