That Lectric bill usually hits you right in the family Joules, but I can see you have put in Amp-le time researching this topic. It's Shock-ing how much Lectricity folks use. Watt is going on here? I know, it Hertz alot while you Ion out all the details. Just try to stay calm and don't blow a Fuse. I have faith in you. I know you Conduit.

If the weather is good and you don't already do this, try hanging out your laundry on a clothes line and cut back using a clothes dryer. If they have non-peak rates that are lower from your power company, consider using the washing machine during that time, some washing machines have timers. Perhaps overtime, invest in insulation so when you do need it to be cool or warm, you don't need to run the mini-split as often, as the insulation will help with this.

nice. One suggestion in the future, get velcro ties instead of zip ties, it makes it easier to adjust your wiring in the future if you say one of those probes burnt out or you wanted to add more or whatever Edit. On the heating issue. I know its an expense, but check out Lumnah Acres and Northern Seclusion, they have switched to outdoor wood boilers. And I have read that depending on your local regulations, in most states landscape companies have to pay to dispose of trees they cut down now. Finding some local landscapers who will just drop off the cut down trees on your land and you can use them for firewood could be a big savings.

Some electric companies charge higher rates during the day. Cheaper rates at night and weekends. Ours is higher 2pm to 7pm Monday threw Friday. Water heaters are a big energy usage. We shut off the water heater mid morning and turn it back on later afternoon. Our water heater keeps hot water for daily usage without running. And only needs to run for shower times. It will run longer but only a couple times Not on and off during the day and night. So I love the thought of that kind of control and knowledge Thank You for sharing.

Why not use a Sotz double heater that you use outside in a metal shed and only run an air line carrying the heat into the house? You burn wood and being contained in the metal shed there is little chance for a house fire. Or you could one of the new wood burning stoves in a small building that controls the air flow to and from the stove and heats the house. It is very efficient burning wood because it gasifies the wood and burns the gasses first.

Sam, I use 2 Emporia Vues in my home, one in the house panel and one in the panel at the pole. I also have solar and love the way it tracks solar input. One thing that I did to reduce my energy usage was to automate the times when my water heater is on or off. I installed a 120v outlet next to my water heater. I then bought a Wyze Smart Outlet and a 120v 2 pole 40A contactor. I plugged the Wyze Smart Outlet into the 120v outlet and then made up a cord to go from the Wyze to the 120V coil of the contactor. The contactor is then put inline with the 240V circuit feeding the water heater. This way when the smart outlet is on, the water heater is getting power. When the smart outlet is off the the water heater does not receive power. I then set up a schedule in the Wyze to turn the smart outlet on at 6 am and off at 8 am, on again at 6 pm and off again at 10 pm, on week days. For the weekends I have the smart outlet come on at 6 am and off again at 10 pm. This prevents those little top off current draws that you see throughout the day and night. Trust me that adds up. You would of course need to set your schedule to suit you but the benefits are real. And this is an inexpensive solution costing less than $50 or so. I have also recently incorporated my Emporias as well as my solar inverters into Home Assistant for even better stats as well as the other benefits of home automation.

Okay.. now that's a crazy awesome solution!!! I need to look into this contactor right away! I think we even have a 120v circuit in the space with our water heater that was an old outlet. It's the end of the line, so I terminated it in a junction box and closed it up. Now it may be of great use! Thanks for this info! Emporia have smart outlets too, so maybe that would be an easy integration with one app vs. wzye. But we also have wyze plugs and cameras, so that's easy, too. :) Thanks!!!!!!

In the summer we would hang out our clothes, using the air conditioner used enough electricity and that saved a lot of energy to go to cooling the house, I wished I had a clothes line now...mama had a wonderful one, Daddy made her lines by sinking cross ties in the ground with a T across the top, which made her 4 lines to hang clothes on, made of a fairly thick wire, when the weather got warm we would go out there a clean the wire so it wouldn't dirty the clothes....I like the way air dry clothes smell.

Great video, A little tip/trick when working on cable management. When adding zip ties, place your first tie and tighten. Now place your second zip tie right next to the first and make sure the zip tie is positioned or oriented exactly like the first and snug it up but not so tight that it won't move. Now you can rotate the second tie back and forth while sliding away from the first, you may need to move wires around a bit. You will notice that the wires will be neatly organized as you slide your tie away from the original. The wires or cables will remain in the same orientation as you do this. Rinse and repeat until you are at the end of your run.

The improvements you have done to your home have cut your A/C requirements by at least 50% new windows/doors that are tight and new insulation everywhere along with the roof-over have buttoned up that 1988 Palm Harbor Single Wide pretty well. Still nice to know where the power use is though. I agree that a timer on the water heater and putting blanket wrapper on it can save real money over the installation cost, and is well worth doing.

LMAO This one goes to eleven (Spinal Tap) Great video as always!!!! I'm going to be getting this system soon, TYVM for showing it, and for the discount as well!!! My electric bill usually runs between $180, and $220. I am VERY curious to find out why. I have watched some videos where the KZbinr shows how your cable TV/internet box draws more power than the refrigerator. I'm not sure if that is true, but this system should either confirm, or deny that info. After you get your big white elephant in the yard AKA propane tank, you can a propane fueled dryer, and water heater, which will really help your electric bill. When I bought my house, it had an electric dryer, and an electric stove. I noticed an IMMEDIATE reduction when I replaced them with gas powered appliances.

Moved into a house. Turned on the light in the den. Nearly burned out my retinas. Turn off light. Retrieve ladder and check bulbs. Three 60 watt bulbs in overhead!?! Check and replace all bulbs in overhead lights. One month later electric company visits to see if there is an issue with my services. No, it’s all good, why? Explains how precious bill there was nearly $400+ and now was less than $100. How!?! Apparently the previous tenant was practically blind with more wattage than deemed safe for the fixture. I’m surprised there wasn’t a fire. They agreed and too were surprised. Were there any scorch marks. Yes , showed them where. The Lineman was so shocked he checked the wires in the attic and replaced the fixture at no cost. By the time I moved out the electric bill was stabilized to a affordable rate. I know they missed those HUGE bills 🎃🎉👍

Okay, I'm going to give you my input. I'm not politically correct, I'm an old woman who just spits it out. Take it or leave it. I recall when I 1st came upon your channel, I suggested you add 2x2s to your 2x4 outer walls, to give you 2x6 studs so you could do R19 insulation instead of R13. A huge difference in comfort,, but you said you didn't want to give up square footage. Your choice! I don't recall, if I mentioned "air sealing" however I did mention Matt Reisinger's channel. You said his builds didn't apply. Now you know why I suggested you watch. He goes into detail about making very energy efficient builds and they can be adapted to your situation. So now, you are left with having to insulate on the outside. Very doable , especially since you did your roof over. You will have to re-add your eaves 1st. You will have to see about air sealing to prevent thermal bridging. Then use sheathing, which needs every seam sealed. Then put a layer of foam over that, seal the seams, add a rain screen, then add siding. Watch Matt for details.

I replaced the ancient air conditioner and air handler with a new heat pump and handler two months ago now. I keep the AC at 80 degrees. Still using a large amount of power. Having lived here for a few months now there are obvious signs of past electrical projects. every time I open up a wall or go to replace a device i find some bad electrical work. I'm trying to do same thing, as I too live in a home with tires underneath it. First exterior walls are 2x6 giving me more insulation, ceiling is vaulted room for more insulation, recenetly purchased dbl pane glass windows, fiberglass front door, adding another layer siding to exterior walls as there was no sheathing under siding, utilities i have electricity from co-op, propane heat house, clothes dryer, water heater, stove. last year when price of propane tripled . i started using electricity to offset propane usage to heat house,aka2-1500w radiator heaters . only used furnace when temps got down to freezing. anyway i walked threw house unplugged everything that had a light on, like stereo, microwave, coffee maker, I was amazed how much power all these devices were using and that wasn't using in off season. if I had used the furnace as normally , i wudda ran outta propane probably 3 times, by using electricity, my propane had a surplus, and electricity never got above summer time usage with A/C on for 3 months, having another or more diff types energy sources. One can find other more efficient ways to cut high energy usage . diversify fuel sources to atleast 3. I'm adding wood stove next summer. possibly solar or small win-gen after that. good luck to all finding ways to conserve energy usage.

Good job on the Video Sam. This is a nice system you have there. Right down my alley and it did me so good to see you performing your cable management. Over my years of work, it always bugged me to see the spider nest left behind by some of the IT techs just pulling communications wires from servers to networks that just did not have any pride. It seemed that low voltage cable runs, even though not required to be in conduit, just did not matter ! I am old school, from my early training beginning in high school and through apprenticeship to become a journeyman, neatness was always stressed. It is not just for the appearance, but it makes troubleshooting so much easier. Well, enough of that soapbox. The little clamps are ammeters (of course you know this) the same as a clamp on amp meter used in trouble shooting electrical circuit. The two wires going to the circuit breakers are for monitoring bus voltage, Phase A and Phase B. This is a great tool for monitoring and troubleshooting ! Great to see that with the technology we have now, the price for something like this is making this tool available for home owners. In industrial process controls this type of sensing technology is widely used, but that is another story and much more involved dealing with 4-20 milli-amp signals Like you said in the video, having all of this info on your phone is priceless and monitoring the large appliances such as the AC systems can give a heads up to problems developing, for instance high amp readings that could relate to a fan or compressor going bad or a dirty filter, etc. Way to go Sam ! Enjoyed this very much.

My wife and I had started an extreme remodel just before the beginning of the Pandemic. We had to finish everything ourselves becoming our own General and Sub to survive. I had a commercial electric contractor as a mentor who visited once and I spoke to him three times. The rest I did myself. Basically even the meter mount which was a dire necessity because of the shutdown. My Seattle City inspector was a great support. I took cable management to an extreme following code and simple logic. I always passed inspections and ended with big Kudos. Of course, KZbin helped a lot-crazy lot. I got an extra Kudo for my labeling on the panel box itself. The code at the time did not require it, but I added a full house surge protector. Now, I would like to add this usage management monitor. Oddly, we went from 760 square feet to 2300. Literally, our gas and electricity is either less than or about the same as before the remodel of a 1943 war box.

Are there any cheaper times that perhaps say,,,,, Angela could set the washing machine up overnight to save cost of electricity? We ( in the UK ) have things called Smart meters. We are all electric with no gas supplies anywhere in our apartment . Our small meter will tell us what we are using , as in cost of things running and even if we arent here , we are paying out a small amount for the fridge to keep running . It is good cos it tells us where we can make savings . For example, in the UK we use an electric kettle , ( i believe in the USA you dont use this appliance?) i bought a small device called a hot water dispenser that delivers 250ml of water only into a large cup for our hot drinks , so that saves time that the kettle would be switched on as it only takes 20 seconds to heat .

depending on the company - we have free hours of power in New Zealand - so I put the washer, dryer, dishwasher on when the power is free - I flip the switch for the hot water when I have chosen my hour of power (I choose 10 pm) so I run my hot water only overnight when it is free or cheap and turn it off during the day (6 am) - you will know if you family can do that or if you have to turn it on for a couple of hours during the day (not 5-9 pm) when it is the most expensive - also the heating turn it on high from 4-5 pm before the power per unit goes up from 5-9 pm and turn it down for the evening as when you turned it on high between 4-5 pm the house was already warm for the rest of the night you are now keeping it warm not warming it up - my power bill is around NZ$12 or US$6 per week - I do run a fire in the winter

Sam, as you are well aware we are in the middle of a complete rewire and I am so sick of looking at wires🙄😩. Although I didn't understand much of this, I'm always impressed by your attention to detail. I'm sure hubby and I will rewatch the video together and he'll understand everything lol. What, no bloopers 😭

Heat pumps are extremely expensive on your electric bill my son lives in York Pennsylvania and last year 2021 he was paying $600 to $700 a month with the heat pump I would have a heat pump for nothing in the world get your propane gas fireplace by all means it's the cheapest if you have to use a fuel and it's the cleanest but I'm sure you know that cuz she had one before but you definitely you need another one other than that when you get your solar up and running that'll help a lot too but shut off that heat pump get your propane heat in and your home looks great

Good job on the electric monitor install. You mention of propane heating in the future. Be aware since fossil fuels have been under attack the push of "going green" prices have and will continue to go up. My 200 glln capacity of propane used to be anywhere of 98¢/glln to $1.24/glln. pre-Biden. Today, we are looking at $3.45/glln. Summer rate was $2.89/glln. Tanks, if you buy your own, new, are going for $4 to $5 times the gallon capacity. Ex. 1000 gallon tank is between $4000 to $5000. Whether in ground or above ground. Then the install, pressure regulator, copper tubing, hard pipe, shutoff valves, etc. One advantage to a large propane setup is running a duel fuel generator during a power outage. I know of Generac backup systems at 13k watts can go nearly 40 days on a 1000 gallon propane setup.. These prices I am sharing are in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia and neighboring Frederick Co., MD. of the company SoUtHeRn StAtEs cO-oP.

Good video ya'll. That's pretty cool. We live in sw Missouri our electric coop will install a meter kinda like that I think that shows you exactly what you're usin but it pay as you go deal which might not be that bad we don't have it. We have had several heat sources over past 50 years the inferred propane has been the best for us all so pellet stove or fireplace love those get the heat of wood stove but no mess very safe. Ya'll home is lookin great. Thanks for sharing be safe have fun enjoy ya'lls family and homestead

One thing that I learned a long time ago from somebody that works for the power company we live in Florida if you run one major appliance at a time especially in the beginning of the billing cycle then you’re at the lower rate but if you use a lot of electricity at the beginning of the billing cycle they put you at a higher kilowatt rate for the entire month Up until recently are electric bill even during the summer for a 1900 square-foot house has been under $200

The only thing is, propane has gone up in price. I love my woodstove. I don't mind the smell of smoke, but I don't have an efficient stove, I have an old potbelly. I love the heat it gives off and the fact that if the power goes off I can still be warm.

Solar power water heater? I know here in Australia during the summer months at the top end we don’t even need hot water. For washing dishes I just boil a kettle. But then again I hand wash those. I’d also recommend using a clothesline in the summer months. These save a huge amount of money and you get use to it after a while. Most homes haven’t even got a dryer. Just some things to think about. Blessings

If possible to know when you need hot water…you can turn off the hot water during your sleep period at least 8-9 hours. Turn it on when you get up, at the breaker…or turn on 20 minutes before needed…

You spoke about a propane tank fireplace. To install the propane tank that would be one of those large white tanks that are usually at the back of the house and then you run gas line to it? Can you please explain a little bit more. We have gas range. So I’m wondering if that option for us.
