Some electric companies charge higher rates during the day. Cheaper rates at night and weekends. Ours is higher 2pm to 7pm Monday threw Friday. Water heaters are a big energy usage. We shut off the water heater mid morning and turn it back on later afternoon. Our water heater keeps hot water for daily usage without running. And only needs to run for shower times. It will run longer but only a couple times Not on and off during the day and night. So I love the thought of that kind of control and knowledge Thank You for sharing.

In the summer we would hang out our clothes, using the air conditioner used enough electricity and that saved a lot of energy to go to cooling the house, I wished I had a clothes line now...mama had a wonderful one, Daddy made her lines by sinking cross ties in the ground with a T across the top, which made her 4 lines to hang clothes on, made of a fairly thick wire, when the weather got warm we would go out there a clean the wire so it wouldn't dirty the clothes....I like the way air dry clothes smell.
@SephoraBelle2 жыл бұрын
If the weather is good and you don't already do this, try hanging out your laundry on a clothes line and cut back using a clothes dryer. If they have non-peak rates that are lower from your power company, consider using the washing machine during that time, some washing machines have timers. Perhaps overtime, invest in insulation so when you do need it to be cool or warm, you don't need to run the mini-split as often, as the insulation will help with this.

nice. One suggestion in the future, get velcro ties instead of zip ties, it makes it easier to adjust your wiring in the future if you say one of those probes burnt out or you wanted to add more or whatever Edit. On the heating issue. I know its an expense, but check out Lumnah Acres and Northern Seclusion, they have switched to outdoor wood boilers. And I have read that depending on your local regulations, in most states landscape companies have to pay to dispose of trees they cut down now. Finding some local landscapers who will just drop off the cut down trees on your land and you can use them for firewood could be a big savings.

Interesting I have a hybrid water heater aka as a Heat Pump. 3 settings regular water heater, combo or heat pump only. On heat pump setting it uses less then 2 amps, but is also the slowest recovery. Washing clothes in cold water only saves lots of money.

A few years ago I purchased a meter to capture and recycle my static electricity that all electric creates. It immediately cut my power bill in half I later purchase from Walmart small power saver boxes that plug into an outlet. I purchased 4 of them and saved an additional 69% on my power bill bring a summer peak of about $450.00 a month for a 960 square foot mobile home down to $140.00 which to me was a major win. Just a suggestion for you and your family.

Sam, I use 2 Emporia Vues in my home, one in the house panel and one in the panel at the pole. I also have solar and love the way it tracks solar input. One thing that I did to reduce my energy usage was to automate the times when my water heater is on or off. I installed a 120v outlet next to my water heater. I then bought a Wyze Smart Outlet and a 120v 2 pole 40A contactor. I plugged the Wyze Smart Outlet into the 120v outlet and then made up a cord to go from the Wyze to the 120V coil of the contactor. The contactor is then put inline with the 240V circuit feeding the water heater. This way when the smart outlet is on, the water heater is getting power. When the smart outlet is off the the water heater does not receive power. I then set up a schedule in the Wyze to turn the smart outlet on at 6 am and off at 8 am, on again at 6 pm and off again at 10 pm, on week days. For the weekends I have the smart outlet come on at 6 am and off again at 10 pm. This prevents those little top off current draws that you see throughout the day and night. Trust me that adds up. You would of course need to set your schedule to suit you but the benefits are real. And this is an inexpensive solution costing less than $50 or so. I have also recently incorporated my Emporias as well as my solar inverters into Home Assistant for even better stats as well as the other benefits of home automation.
@sam-and-angela2 жыл бұрын
Okay.. now that's a crazy awesome solution!!! I need to look into this contactor right away! I think we even have a 120v circuit in the space with our water heater that was an old outlet. It's the end of the line, so I terminated it in a junction box and closed it up. Now it may be of great use! Thanks for this info! Emporia have smart outlets too, so maybe that would be an easy integration with one app vs. wzye. But we also have wyze plugs and cameras, so that's easy, too. :) Thanks!!!!!!

One thing that I learned a long time ago from somebody that works for the power company we live in Florida if you run one major appliance at a time especially in the beginning of the billing cycle then you’re at the lower rate but if you use a lot of electricity at the beginning of the billing cycle they put you at a higher kilowatt rate for the entire month Up until recently are electric bill even during the summer for a 1900 square-foot house has been under $200

I have to get one of these, presently using over 65kWh a day, we just purchased a home 3 miles from one we rented. Our energy usage TRIPLED and I am having a hard time trying to figure out what the heck is going on. Our habits have not changed. I replaced the ancient air conditioner and air handler with a new heat pump and handler two months ago now. I keep the AC at 80 degrees. Still using a large amount of power. Having lived here for a few months now there are obvious signs of past electrical projects. every time I open up a wall or go to replace a device i find some bad electrical work. This will help me identify what circuit or circuits could be the culprits. Thanks for the video!

Why not use a Sotz double heater that you use outside in a metal shed and only run an air line carrying the heat into the house? You burn wood and being contained in the metal shed there is little chance for a house fire. Or you could one of the new wood burning stoves in a small building that controls the air flow to and from the stove and heats the house. It is very efficient burning wood because it gasifies the wood and burns the gasses first.

Great video, A little tip/trick when working on cable management. When adding zip ties, place your first tie and tighten. Now place your second zip tie right next to the first and make sure the zip tie is positioned or oriented exactly like the first and snug it up but not so tight that it won't move. Now you can rotate the second tie back and forth while sliding away from the first, you may need to move wires around a bit. You will notice that the wires will be neatly organized as you slide your tie away from the original. The wires or cables will remain in the same orientation as you do this. Rinse and repeat until you are at the end of your run.

How are you finagling distribution ofmstuff and materials between the workshop and first shed? What are you using your tarp shed for? There were some landscaping plans for immediately around the house, are they on hold or are you moving forth? How did your trees survive the summer (although spring will tell) and as the realities of the first year are thought about, do you still plan more this coming year? - Maybe its too early for a video on any of these things but as fall draws closer to an end and winter approaches, maybe some updates on these things? depending on the company - we have free hours of power in New Zealand - so I put the washer, dryer, dishwasher on when the power is free - I flip the switch for the hot water when I have chosen my hour of power (I choose 10 pm) so I run my hot water only overnight when it is free or cheap and turn it off during the day (6 am) - you will know if you family can do that or if you have to turn it on for a couple of hours during the day (not 5-9 pm) when it is the most expensive - also the heating turn it on high from 4-5 pm before the power per unit goes up from 5-9 pm and turn it down for the evening as when you turned it on high between 4-5 pm the house was already warm for the rest of the night you are now keeping it warm not warming it up - my power bill is around NZ$12 or US$6 per week - I do run a fire in the winter

Here in Britain we have a choice of suppliers for our electricity, they fit the smart meters to our supply line. Another thing, we have to have an electrician to do all of anything to do with electrical wiring. The meters have their own sim card fitted internally and we have nothing to do with it. The supplier gets the information and send us the bills. Some use direct debit, others like us pay weekly, after receiving the bill we're usually are in credit.

Love what you have done Sam & Angela. I live in South Africa, we are notorious for load shedding (our government driven power company switch the power off for up to 10 hours a day ). We have installed a gas geyser system( I think you call it water heaters) that works on two 120pound gas bottles(we have a delivery system. You simply phone them and they deliver - I think you call it propane tanks ) It is way cheaper due to the fact that you only heat the water you use. (the system we use is the LA Paloma system - the B&B houses use this system ). I hope this will help you in thinking of other methods of energy Sorry for the use of local terms for stuff.

I'm trying to do same thing, as I too live in a home with tires underneath it. First exterior walls are 2x6 giving me more insulation, ceiling is vaulted room for more insulation, recenetly purchased dbl pane glass windows, fiberglass front door, adding another layer siding to exterior walls as there was no sheathing under siding, utilities i have electricity from co-op, propane heat house, clothes dryer, water heater, stove. last year when price of propane tripled . i started using electricity to offset propane usage to heat house,aka2-1500w radiator heaters . only used furnace when temps got down to freezing. anyway i walked threw house unplugged everything that had a light on, like stereo, microwave, coffee maker, I was amazed how much power all these devices were using and that wasn't using in off season. if I had used the furnace as normally , i wudda ran outta propane probably 3 times, by using electricity, my propane had a surplus, and electricity never got above summer time usage with A/C on for 3 months, having another or more diff types energy sources. One can find other more efficient ways to cut high energy usage . diversify fuel sources to atleast 3. I'm adding wood stove next summer. possibly solar or small win-gen after that. good luck to all finding ways to conserve energy usage.

The company stats on dipping coils says it reduces energy consumption and increases the life of the coil. I have a fantastic HVAC company and they did everything they could to mitigate the problem. Now, no more dirty sock(honestly, dirty socks would have smelled better that what came thru the vents, I did a LOT of research to diagnose the problem). The company said that in all the years they have been in business, mine was only the second unit that had this.

@@anitapennington6195 thank you so much for replying to my question. we have an older Doublewide that we have had all new double pane windows replaced, new energy-efficient doors, new roof, but our power bill is still high. Last month it was 293. Thank you so much. This gives me an idea it’s possibly our heat pump, but I do know that it’s poorly insulated. It’s a Clayton home we just had to have the kitchen redone because the floor needed to be repaired and the cabinets came apart so after four months I finally have a kitchen again but that’s when we found out that the outside wall when they took down and removed the old wall to put up new sheet rock that whole wall only two areas that had any insulation and the rest had no insulation nsulation whatsoever.

I have been considering installing an Emporia Vue in my panel. They don’t have any CT’s over 50 amps, but the company said it can report up to 75 amps on those which will work. We have 4 sub panels and only one exceeds the 75 (it is 100). I don’t have as much free space in my panel so it might be tricky. Thanks again for another great video!

Oh gosh Sam you are so amazing at all the stuff you keep up with, and energy consumption can be a challenge for sure. I live in a 1955 Sparton with an addition built on and that makes my house 1200 square feet in total, and since it is an older home I am having some electrical issues, because it is an older home, some of the outlets have stopped working, oh gosh I will need to have an electrician come to my house and fix all of the wiring and I am sure that will cost and arm and a leg. I really love watching all of the amazing things you and Angela and the boys have done. Thanks for this video, I hope that you have a good day tomorrow, sending love and hugs, bye!! 😂🤗💜💜💜

I use wood pellets here in New England. Heating oil and propane are at an all time high. Propane fireplace do you just have your own tank and fill like one does for the grill. What if you use solar to preheat your incoming water to hot water tank. Life uncontained has this if you are interested. A lot of electronics are running in the background even when off. I enjoyed the geeking out with you.

Emporia should be loving you. That is a very cool and useful gadget. I will have to go to their website. I have a 200 amp service. I imagine they have different sizes. Anyway, well done and helpful for sure.

Good video. A couple of things I noticed, 1) Your Mini-split seems to be using 500w at idle. that seems high. 2) the water heater is keeping the tank hot all the time; if it was on a timer you could turn it off from the time you go to bed till an hour before you wake up or set what ever schedule works for you, 3) Don't forget propane is not free, at todays prices an electric fireplace might be more economical (factor in install/rental costs of a propane tank vs. an electric wire from your existing panel) 4) A small heater in the bathroom is a great luxury on cold mornings too. Good luck, this is a great start.

Our gas bill has raised a little over 30% over the last two winters. The electric has raised about the same. I have lowered the thermostat for the winter. We wore jackets and gloves and tons of socks in our home last year. I am looking for those thingys you put in your socks and gloves that warm your hands. Will do the same this year. Raised the thermostat this summer and put window tinting on our west side windows. We are cold in the winter and hot in the summer, but we have managed to keep our bill the same as always. Kast year I even wore earmuffs on the coldest days. Crazy but you do what you must. It is only mej and my husband now. I would bite the bullet and raise and lower my thermostat if my kids were still small and they were home. It is tough. For sure.

Can you consider to work yourself off the grid some what? And live a little? Sounds like the utility companies are controlling your lives.

@@sparksfamilyhomestead thank you for your concern, but we are way past being able to do all that. Hubby is very ill, but I am still able to do what needs to be done. We have been retired for a long time. By the Grace of God we will push through. We have lived a good life, the Lord has always been in our midst. We have always been faithful to prayer, to the word to church and we have never failed to pay our tithes and first fruit. We are not rich, but Jesus has kept us. We are well and safe. A little cold and sometimes a little hot, hahahaha but well and safe. Thank you for your kindness. God Bless You.
