If you are new to bushcraft then this series is for YOU! In this video I look at the three most common questions I get asked. 1) Where to train? 2)Who to train with? 3) What gear do I need?

I planted three little hazel plants in my garden a few years back. I coppiced them two years ago and I now have quite a few nice hazel poles at home. A few hazels and a couple of willows could give you a lot of raw material in even a small back garden

Sat on a 15c evening (22.35) and the hammocks at Toasty degrees, beers wondrous, almost as good as 3pks beer and I'm off to the next instalment, happy days :-D *well, evenings haha. Giving the thermometer 5 mins and will update internal temp 👍 33°C in the bag, guess I live here tonight haha.

A tip for those who live in the US. Every state has their own version of the EPA. New York for example has the NY State DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation). Their website (dec.ny.gov) has LOADS of information on free trails to hike, state land you can explore, thousands of public fishing locations, hunting locations, and camping locations. We're lucky enough to have the Adirondacks, the largest protected area in the country, as well as the Catskills, but you'll be surprised how many free camp/hike pieces of land you'll find when you do some searching.

Great video. Three years to late to comment really, but I'm always loath to buy the really expensive stuff as I tend to beat the bejesus out of my tools with continued use, plus I wouldn't want to lose a 200 quid plus axe in the woods, my main axe is a B&Q thing with a hickory handle, think it cost about a tenner years ago and it's always done the job.

Idk about where you live but you could probably use government parks during the day to even test sleep gear. For example ppl spread out blankets and picnic in summer so who's to say you can't put up a tarp and a bivvy and sleep system under it and take a noon nap in the winter. If it's during park hours it's prolly allowed. This way you can know how your gear handles sleeping for 4+ hours. I'm sure you can test a camp stove and other things that aren't an open fire there as well. I work overnights and I've slept outside during the day between 13 hours shifts instead of going home. Also some of those expensive options like the pathfinder school have been generous enough to basically have the entire how to library on the channel. It's not all organized for you but everything you need is there just about. He has navigation, tree and plant identification and uses, all your typical gear and fire and sleep stuff but he also has stuff like meals and blacksmithing. Basically 90% of what you need to get started with all the skills a homesteader or bushcrafters could want short of farming. There are other great homestead channels for the farm and vertical integration of land stuff. I enjoy your channel and many others as well. The internet and then trying and learning yourself by failure is all you really need. Sometimes money and buying stuff protects you from that failure or cuts you off from creativity and getting a better organic feel for gear

One of my biggest moans about many bushcraft videos is that the sometimes "so called" bushcrafter seems to be advocating carrying so much gear that the trainee or beginner think they need a huge back pack. Bushcrafting is what it says and its normally on a day out basis rather than a many night affair … if it is that then the kit is planned accordingly. If you are going out in the woods for a day ….. take what you need and leave all the recommended junk at home. I have taught on survival courses where "pupils" have turned up with a military Bergen full of gear …. youtube recommendations? …. once they finish they realise that when we told them to leave some gear behind we were right!! A good video tho just about right … well done ...atb Jim
@greencraft47835 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jim, I have taught on those courses too and often marvel at the gear folks bring along (I have moved house with less!!). At the same time , I have seen those who venture out with little more than a knife and an over estimation of their own ability , only to come "unstuck". I guess it's about finding a sensible balance. Hopefully that is what I have recommended and I got it right.

No Quintin, I was not. The badge was from when I was running a program for young people (Greencraft rangers). I was looking for a badge with it on and ebay threw these up. Then an American viewer pointed out the military connection, so they have been removed.

Hey man, I just thought you should know that (in the US), wearing that Ranger tab without having been a US Army Ranger is a big no-no. We call it "stolen valor" and it's considered extremely disrespectful to those that sacrificed and earned the tab. I'm in no way accusing you of the above, just thought you should know that your US viewership might take offence.
@greencraft47835 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that my friend , I wouldn't want to cause offence. I shall remove.
@markcummings68565 жыл бұрын
modernhereticnw I don’t think it is anything authentic, is it. Isn’t something like an aftermarket piece of clothing?
@modernhereticnw5 жыл бұрын
It's an exact copy of a US Army Ranger tab. I'm not sure what you're asking. You can buy literally almost any military medal, ribbon, tab, patch, or flag as a civilian. It doesn't mean you should wear them. In the case above, I'm sure our friend didn't intend to emulate a Ranger. (Shrug)

You're easily annoyed my friend,your soldiers should be more concerned about fighting a false war in Syria and your government supplying the ji...had...ii.s . With arms and cash.clinton,bush,o,bomba, have been extremely disrespectful to your troops not this guy wearing a freaking tab.
