OK OK, holy crap, after watching this for the second time in 24 hours I just made a connection. Someone tell me if this seems like a thing or if I'm crazy. In the first season of Man Down, Greg's dad was played by Rik Mayall. Greg said he was absolutely overjoyed to get Rik Mayall for the role, and there are several reasons for that (his real dad is also a chaotic prankster, he and Rik bear a strong resemblance to each other, Rik is a comedy legend and as a comedian he has a ton of respect for him, etc.). But generally speaking, it's a well-established fact that Greg was/is a huge fan of Rik and felt a strong connection to him. A lot of people say Rik's character in Bottom was coded as bi. It may be a reach, but it seems perfectly plausible to me that Greg is such a fan of Rik in part because at a point in time where Greg himself was an adolescent, with an interest in comedy and acting, Rik played a popular TV character who looked a lot like Greg and also had a strongly implied attraction to men as well as women. He became a fan because he saw himself in Rik's character; hell, maybe it even inspired him to get into acting/comedy in the first place.
