Just as Greg starts catching fish from his kayak and finally feels like his luck is turning around, a hook stabs DEEP into his hand and Amós must rush to help him. Before disaster struck, Greg made progress on his Bushcraft Recliner Chair build.
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

We all have bad times, we all have accidents but how many of us have the guts to put it out here like Greg has? I would rather follow a ‘real' person but for those of you who are so negative, don’t watch…then you won’t need to comment so derisively. Hang in Greg and Amos, plenty of us enjoy sharing your adventure 👍🤝🤝

I got a clam shell underneath the finger nail at nine years. We were waiting for the ferry to PEI. Once on the ferry, the throbbing pain started, was so bad they called ahead to have a doctor ready to deal with it, eight hours later. He understood the pain was so bad, he ended up doing it for nothing. And at 3 o’clock in the morning. Thank you whomever you was. 🥰

I had a really bad hook accident when I was 12. I hooked a ~8 lb blue catfish. I went to pull the hook out and the rod was under tension; the hook popped out and stuck itself in my cheek. To top it all off, the fish jumped and it’s barb on the side fin went through the thin part of my hand. I was doubled over in pain with a hook in my cheek and my grandpa was almost on the ground in tears laughing at the sight of me. 3 stitches and a lollipop later, and I was good as new.

Man, I know a guy who had a really bad motorcycle accident, was busted up for months, shoulders arms collar bones all broken. Anyway, when he was getting released his mates shouted him a deep-sea fishing tour, so he is only out of hospital for a few days, goes fishing, catches a fish is pulling it in, it's nearly in, SNAP!!!! the lead sinker weight smashed him right in the eye ball, crushed his eye, had to go back into hospital to have his eye removed.

Boy you got some trash luck. Easy to get hooked when you’re tired or even not! I hooked a big catfish once and lost it it and had a backlash that caught my forearm with the same luck. The worst part was the dirty water. I got a neat little makeshift dirt tattoo from it. Hope they gave you some antibiotics!

Aw, man! Same happened to me catfishing with my grandpa at 8. Hook in my cheek while actively trying to avoid my mom's wild casting! She got me anyway! She said "don't tell Grandpa!" So my brother yells "Grandpa!!!" Haha! He was very stoic about it. It was a fishing lure with multiple barbed treble hooks. He was usually a laughing friendly man but he was very serious and said this child needs to go to the hospital. Shots to numb my face hurt the worst. My mom got me a grey kitten. The ER gave me a Garfield bandaid. Ha! I tried to use the string trick to get my friends hook out of his finger but it also was stuck on the muscle in his finger and he began to have a seizure in the boat from the pain. When we went to the emergency room their tools were rusted and wouldn't cut! Teehee.

Greg is absolutely correct, when a person is in survival mode, they need to achieve building a shelter, creating fire, find water and rendering safe to drink by using the fire. They have to establish a food source. Once these essential survival elements are met, they are thriving. These two also have devolved self reliance, they do not require someone else to provide for them. No occasionally Amós provides the fish but Greg finds other wild berries and mushrooms and he cooks for them. Their shelters are modern style shelters, hammocks and rain flys.

Good to see they got it out at least.🙂 When I was 12 I was walking down to the lake with a rapala with a rattle. My dog thought it was a toy and grabbed it from my hand. The hooks ripped out of the dogs mouth but got buried deep in the palm of my hand. I definitely have big respect for hooks with barbs!!

I was actually worrying about him hooking himself- the first time he did it (on camera) made me uncomfortable, and, to my surprise, he hooked himself about a half second after I thought 'he's going to get himself'. I'm almost never right about that kind of thing. I guess it speaks to Greg's luck on this trip.

Greg - 'Try not get old" was what you said. I'm a bit older than you, and a survivalist too. We cannot avoid age - however what you show, without maybe knowing it, is how to be a bushman and a survivor irrespective of age. It's us 'old' fellows that have developed real skills due to our circumstances, that can survive irrespective of age. It's experience and life skills that is survival. I embrace you mate - wish I could meet you, Amos, and Zack in person. If ever you wander down under in Australia, please touch base with me!!

Just some tips/ never hold a fishing pole at the base. Should be held by reel attachment. It's all in wrist. Also, when taking weeds off, or ever dealing with lure/bait, there should always be enough line for bait to come to reel. You had half the distance of line causing mass tension.

Greg you need more slack in your line when removing weeds etc. When winding in leave about 5-6 feet of line out and lift the bait and swing it to you. You had a lot of tension on the line which caused the hook to sink in deep when you let go of the bait

I would like to tell ya what my parents used to say but there might be youngsters reading this. Last time I injured myself in the woods, my wrist was broken from a fall. No insurance for ER so I set it myself using cardboard and gorilla tape. Good thing you dont have a predatory health care system there in Canada but I hear the income taxes are quite brutal though. I guess we are screwed either way. Many times I have cut myself deep and stitched it up with the needle and thread always carried in my get home bag rather than being price gouged by the doc. Incense cedar pitch works wonders as an antiseptic and wild lettuce sap will take the edge off while stitching. Congratulations on your 600k. Wont be long till you reach 1 million and finally be able to afford a settler's wrench for making bushcraft chairs. Those chicken of the woods mushrooms sure looked delicious. One of my favorites.

I love fishing but I am so paranoid of hooks these days after getting two of the treble hooks stuck in my finger way past the barbs. I had to go to the hospital and they cut the hooks and pulled them out the way they went in. They were in the tip also which is so more sensitive and believe me you really don't want to have to go through that pain I did so be very careful. I now stick a hook into something before tying it on the line and I stay clear of trebles.

Letting lures go, with a tension on the line, from the hand, is a no-go: ) Old friend of mine did this many years ago, and just pulled the hook out in panic from the hand, and it got bloody and messy. But out like this, on 30 days survival, thats another thing. I would be really grumpy within a few days in, I think. And to then record and entertain at the same time, I would not like. Nice that there are people like Greg out there.

I've noticed you never leave enough spare line between the end of your rod and the hooks. Even when landing fish. This leads to a lot more tension when you start messing with the hooks or the fish, as you cannot move around as freely. I would leave almost a rod length not reeled in and point the rod tip to the sky. This will make it lots easier to land fish, and less accidents when messing around with the hook length. Love the content.

We appreciate you risking life & limb to bring us these series! You guys both have great hearts. It's amazing how medical facilities don't know how to deal with Fish hooks so you have to end up pretty much doing it yourself and last time the pliers at the emergency room was rusted! Ha!! The nerve runs along the inside of each finger and nerves grow/heal about 1 mm a year so if you lose feeling it'll eventually come back! You were having trouble with one of your hands working before in your vids, Greg, that seems to not bother you anymore? I was traveling through Canada to Alaska when you had the bed bugs and I had a feeling to sleep in my vehicle to avoid bed bugs for some reason and I'm glad I did! I went thru where u got Fin, etc. When Amòs said the first time he found a huge Puffball he thought it was from another world - when we were children in farm country in southern Wisconsin, we would find old Puffballs larger than basketballs and we too thought they were alien eggs or something! Ha! Where I spore out the Puffballs, there are now patches of a dozen huge Puffballs within feet of each other. We also have mini Puffballs that are like button mushrooms that grow in bunches on stumps and remain small. Not sure their name! Thanks again for the vids, guys! We feel your pain and are glad when you eat well & sleep well in all your vids! ✌️ PEACE

Greg, My favorite is The Four Yorkshiremen with Rowan Atkins, it's can provide useful humor therapy. " Oh when we were poor, we hadn't the price for a cup of tea, without milk, or sugar, or tea, Rowan - " all we could manage was to suck on a damp cloth" Carry on brother!

Well at least Greg didn’t get totally skunked he did catch this rock fish. Man some day you on and some days you off that’s why they call it fishing and not catching. Hang in there Greg you’ll get before it’s over if not there will be next time. Catch y’all later or on the next one.

Everyone seems to be commenting on the injury and I, like the others, am glad you're OK. But I have to ask . . . after no food for 5 days, how hungry can you be when you don't keep the rockfish? Maybe bony, maybe not a salmon but that was a big enough fish for a meal for you and Amos! Can't wait for the next video and I'm going to be so disappointed when this 30 day challenge is over!

You have to open The Beall on your spinning reel and let out extra line and then you can mess with the hooks or lures that way you don’t get hooked and you don’t have to hang your real off the end of the boat doesn’t matter how long the Rod is just as long as you open the bell and let out some line and Lower your lure down to your hands. Yes I hope this helps.

Always a good idea to have a pair of wire snips on a fishing trip. I had to extract a hook from my son's eye brow one day. But....I had wire snips. Made the job a whole lot easier and no trip to the emergency room.
