I'm 65 and lost my love of Christmas long ago because of how crass and extremely commercial it appeared when I was a troubled teenager in the early 70's . Then one day Greg Lake's soulful deeply felt song touched many such souls as I . Greg your spirit still lives in many hearts. Leave your heart and let your road be clear. Indeed!

Really? Have you listened closely to the lyrics? It's about how a child is disappointed because Christmas is nothing like his expectations, and the Christmas gospel is just a fairy tale. As a kid growing up in the early to mid 70s, this one song left the biggest impact on me. I’d wait all year to hear it again. To this day, it still remains one of my favorite songs at Christmas. Fun fact. This song was not meant to be a Christmas song. It was about the commercialism of Christmas and a loss of innocence. The end always gets me. One thing about this song is it reminds me of the movie Love & Death. If you’ve seen it, you know. Anyway, thank you, Mr. Lake for this classic masterpiece.

Thank you for getting it! So many talk about what a great Christmas song this is, or how it reminds me of their childhood Christmas. What the lyrics are really about is how Christmas doesn't live up to a child's expectations, and how even the Christmas gospel is nothing but a fairy tale. One of my favorite versions of this is Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) accompanying Greg on flute in an English cathedral. Obviously they didn't listen to the lyrics or they never would have given the church's permission!

Like most people have said, this is truly a Christmas song that brings out all the emotions. In my humble opinion, this is the best song of that time. Growing up in the 70's was fantastic during this period because of all the 'other" wonderful "Christmas" pop hits from Wizzard, Slade and Mud. Greg Lake did make his song for the one reason - the commercialism of Christmas. He wrote it as a protest song for the reasons stated. Some people felt that it was anti religious and Lake and lyricist Peter Sinfield were surprised by the backlash. In reply, Sinfield said that the song was ultmately about joy and hope mixed with a touch of cynicism. Now that was back then. Look at how it has grown today. Have a look at Sarah Brightman's version, it is quite beautiful to say the least. Thanks Greg for the memories. Your song will last throughout the generations of time. Bill
@RobertGraziose4 күн бұрын
I know Sinfeild wrote alot of ELP and King Crimson. But I was under the impression that Lake wrote this one. Sinfeild is really an atheist. I mean Hollowed be thy name. But of course you know I love you, or what else am I here for, only you not face to face,but side by side forevermore, and I need to be here with you for without you what am I? Just another fool out searching for some heaven in the sky. And in Karen evil 9 ." Not content with that, with our hands behind our back we'll pull Jesus from a hat, get into that get into that." This is tame by Sinfeild standards.

@roneichstaedt885311 ай бұрын
No, it's NOT "a beautiful, thoughtful awareness" of the good old days. It's the ultimate disappointment of a young boy as he realizes Christmas is a scam. They promise snow, but there's only rain. He goes to bed with great expectations only to wake to disillusionment. He believed in Santa (Father Christmas) only to find he's a fake. Even the Christmas gospel is a fairy tale. At the end, although he wishes a happy holiday, he warns that it's basically a crap shoot.

I've had the saddest and quietest Christmas ever. My dad passed away some years ago from cancer and my mum has on going dementia and is so hard of hearing. She can't walk very far due to back pain. Thankfully I have an older brother who is a GP and helps out when he can. So I listen to this classic song by Greg Lake every year without fail, among other Christmas songs. Brings back fond happy memories from when I was a younger boy. I always remember jumping up on my parents double bed on Christmas morning and seeing what Santa put in my long Christmas sock. Every year there was always a tangerine at the bottom of the stocking sock. Lol yeah such happy childhood memories 😊

The words of this song rings true just as much today as when it was written by Greg himself at 12 years old. So wise & heartbreakingky sung as thru an innocent child's eyes . Speaks of loss of innocence & Christmas commercialism & in the last video photos of Vietnam War. And here it is 2022 & a war in Ukraine/Russia. Was this music a predicter of events to come? There can never be a peace on earth as long as there are ugly weapons of war. Greg was so young in this video, and cute. Sung very well. Greg was ahead for his time. I like to think he had a wonderful life. I'm age 64 now & discovered ELP for the second time. I wish I had the pleasure of meeting him. I have listened to much more of his music in the past weeks. I didn't know what I missed as a teeneager the first go round. Marvelous story teller. At 12 I was not writing music doing stupid things 12 year olds do.
