I really enjoy hearing The Hammer's stories. I began watching Championship Wrestling From Florida with Gordon Solie in the mid-70's. This series brings back a lot of good memories, watching wrestling on TV and going to the Miami Beach Convention Center and the Jai Alai Fronton to see the matches in person. Dusty Rhodes, Mike Graham, Bob Roop, Rocky Johnson, and so many other wonderful athletes and entertainers. What showmen they all were. I miss those times.

Gregg is so right. Wrestling should be about the basics hold vs holds. People get injured with all the high flying moves nowadays.
@mikeg2491
@mikeg2491 Жыл бұрын
I like high flying stuff but it’s weird how I’ll watch AEW now and someone like Bryan Danielson having a true old school, holds-heavy match seems more like the sideshow attraction now than the norm. I also think high flying moves have more meaning when they come out of nowhere or used as a finisher, good example being Brock’s Lesnar’s moonsault, it makes if look more impressive when you rarely do the move.

Real. Hahaha,. Real and pro wrestling don't go together, let me tell you this,. Thank you, Travis. There are so many things that I haven't thought about since I've left my childhood, but only recently recalled just a few since I started watching Greg's talks on KZbin. It's great to hear about all of what I never knew or just didn't recall as it conjures up many buried memories of a time in my life that had been left so far behind! All of this puts the pieces of the puzzle of my life into a different perspective for me. It shows in some ways how we evolved though the years from Big Time Wrestling to World Wrestling Entertainment! I can remember Dr. D., David Shultz slapping a reporter, while defending Wrestling as REAL, during the 1980's, I think, only to come now, as being Scripted Storylines! As an ignorant child, believing it's not fake to growing up to being an adult realizing that your parents were being honest when describing it as a Man's Soap Opera! Sad, but still a good old Book of Memories to have on the Shelf of Life.

@@351clevelandmodifiedmotor4 Dude, what he was saying, is that Hammer worked hard to make the fans buy into & believe that what he was doing was a shoot. Now, his Dad & the guys of his Dad's era like Lou Thesz, Verne Gagne & others worked their matches to where their punches & kicks were stiff & real because that's what the promoters wanted. Dusty has told the story many times where he & Dick Murdoch used to get the shit kicked out of them by Dick The Bruiser & The Crusher & those guys would LAUGH at Dusty & Dick while hitting & kicking them for real. That's the biggest difference between Johnny V's era of the business & now, back then, the guys & girls & to be willing to take & give stiff shit in order to keep the fans coming back & more importantly, they took pride in being in the business & took it seriously, whereas now, guys like Pockets & Twinkle Toes McFinger Bang basically don't take the business seriously & do everything with a wink & a nod like nothing matters anymore. & the guys & girls that currently work in the business wonder why veterans & legends like Corny get angry & go off on them about the shit they do that makes the business look like a bad version of SNL & not a wrestling show.

WWF made a mockery of Dusty Rhodes by putting him in those ridiculous polka dots. That's not the son of a plumber. That wasn't the guy that would just as well step into the ring with blue jeans, cowboy boots, and a bullrope.

Yeah, I didn't care for the "Polka Dot Dusty" either, but you have to admit, he made that horrible gimmick work better than anyone else possibly could have. Dusty is definitely in my top 5, all-time favorite wrestlers. His behind-the-scenes work in the WWF/E was absolutely groundbreaking, working with all the young talent over the years, teaching and molding them. But, I certainly enjoyed his in-ring work in the other territories, better than WWF/E. Later on, they tried to do the same thing to his son, Dustin, with that stupid Goldust gimmick. But hell, not only did Dustin make it work, he made that character into a LEGEND! By constantly evolving over the years to keep up with the times, Goldust became one of the most entertaining and memorable "characters" in wrestling history. Talk about making lemonade out of lemons! :)

Greg's view of how a match should look reflects perfectly what is wrong with much of wrestling today - much of it no longer looks like a fight (fake or not). Too much time with setups/complexity and not being able to make it look like punches, kicks, etc. actually land.

Greg was very nice to me when he was in Nashua NH doing charity wrestling about 15 years ago. He was big as a house, in a Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and flip flops. I was shocked when I saw him step out of the isle at a local gas station and I recognized him immediately. He looked briefly nervous I was going to be a dick, I am a 300lb heavily tattooed guy but I just smiled, held out my hand and expressed what a fan I was. He looked relieved and gave me a firm handshake and we wished each other a good day.

I have met a few wrestlers through my gym days. I was not a fan Per se, but knew who they were and knew they worked hard. Not lazy people at all. I am sure some are jerks, but the ones I met could not ask for more appreciative gentlemen. Also, do not get con-screwed with the UFC and all. These are tough guys. Yes, a college wrestler and professional fighters may handle them, but 99% of the men out there they tough men.

Greg was one of the great in ring technician's of all time, a real chip off of the ole block. I saw his Dad and Wahoo McDaniel many times at ringside and some nights you could hear a pin drop in the arena and their blows to each other would echo all around you. Great memories.

I never much liked wrestlers running into the ropes. All the dives over and through the ropes now look so bad. The guys always stand there like an idiot waiting for someone to jump on their head. I hate it I really think it's one of the worst things in wrestling. It looks so damn fake. I love AEW but that's one thing that I hate. They do it allot and wwe. No one ever makes it look good.

Fans have always known that the outcomes are pre-determined, they have never cared. They get to watch some of the finest athletes in the world put on a fantastic show. Besides, where else are you going to see a 300 pound guy do flips and even the worm.

Yes, if are wondering, dusty Rhodes here he talks about is the father of aew champ cody Rhodes. Dusty named Vincent Rummels was a major wrestler well before aew existed. Mowt wrestlers back rhen were 2nd 3rd 4th generations as otherwise yhey couldn't be trusted. Eg dusty, curt henning, road dog 🐕, etc

He had the coolest looking elbow drop (that wasn't from the top rope). He hit a guy with that and that guy looked like he was dead. It really looked like a hammer falling down on someone.
