Water-methanol injection. Greg achieves his dream of driving an ME109. Next step: Greg produces a chart showing projected horsepower of his modified FIAT engine up to altitudes of 30,000 feet, and explains why he stayed with turbocharging versus putting together a two-speed two-stage mechanical supercharger. What impresses me is the narrow thickness between the cylinder liners. Back in the day, the small blocks took some really good machining to get a true small block and get good bore by allowing the cylinders close proximity (thin wall) Your video shows the machining tolerances. I used to work for EMD and the two - stroke diesels needed a dedicated oil "squirter" to squirt oil to the underside of the pistons for cooling. I liked the part of your video were you show that the "squirters".
@BrodeyDoverosx3 жыл бұрын
That’s actually a lot of walk thickness and especially so given that the block is mostly closed

These FIAT engines also have those oil squirters. It's pretty much an industry standard at this point due to the heat loads of combining high boost pressures with high base compression ratio.

You're absolutely right about some manufacturers making use of small gains from boring out cylinders. My very first car was a '70 VG Valiant Pacer (Australian) with the 245 cube straight 6 hemi...only the Pacer actually was bored and used .060" oversized pistons so it would just barely make it to 250 c.i. Was such a surprise to me when I found that this is how they came from the factory, just for that tiny bit more displacement...but evidently, it was worth it to them at the time. :-)

Great video Greg. I've got a 2005 Fiat Punto HGT Abarth 1800 twin cam 16 valve (actually 1750 as the capacity is 1747 cc) with absolutely no space for turbocharging. I developed a 1956 stroker conversion, fitted custom H-beam connecting rods, 1 mm oversize Wossner forged pistons, 10.7:1 compression ratio, bigger injectors and ported, gasket matched and balanced the rotating assembly etc. Too many other mods to list here but must mention the torgue and performance is great and scares a lot of modern cars. The top end is restricted to 140 mph as it is hitting the rev limiter in 5th gear (soon to fit Alfa Romeo 2.0 TS 147 gear set) and that is fast enough for me. Enjoy your build as I did, especially the driving.

tell you what when you balance the pistons and rods and what not, with the crank; make friction there at it's least co-efficient.... fuel ignition is something you can feel. we've all heard of lemons, but there are times when it all comes together, that once in a lifetime deal, when engines, transmissions, gear ratio, and luck.. all come together on a perfect day and do exactly what they are supposed to do. Never forget in the mid `60's a guy had a 273 Barracuda when 426-427-428-429's were all the rage and that grey thing would jump and get on down the line; it was something to behold. it all just came together. have seen builders take their time weigh each piece and 'balance' a motor and have felt the 'jump' it creates...the beauty was it got better mileage because it was more efficient.

Anaerobic sealants like Loctite 518 will only cure when air is excluded so the potential for error that Greg describes at 6:15 should be reduced if not avoided. Hmm, I don't see it that way. The current 124 seems to be an even match for the Miata in every way except dealer service, which in the Fiat world is generally poor. The 124 is also much nicer than the Miata, for example, where the Miata has plastic on the interior, the Fiat uses nice soft touch stuff. The Fiat also has a stronger transmission. If you are planning mods, that's enough reason to go with the Fiat.

While using OEM RTV is nice at $30 a tube and with availability issues there's lots of other products that can easily be used in their place. Permatex Right stuff is my number one RTV that I use for almost anything. If I had to choose one product for the rest of my life it would be this lol. It seals most any fluid very well and can basically be put immediately into service after torque. The only real negative is that it can be more difficult to remove components sealed with it and to clean the old sealant off. Permatex ultra grey and ultra black are also both great products. If I'm working on something that I might have to remove in less than a year id rather use one of them lol. They need more cure time.

I'm pretty sure you can run a bit more boost with no issues. Your engine is actually designed for boost. I'm running 10 psi on stock bottom end nc miata. That gets me to 13.7s at 105 mph. There are guys running 14 psi on the stock bottom end. That's pretty crazy considering it's a 7000 rpm high compression motor. Luckily, the nc miatas were built with forged cranks, but I'm worried about ring gap.

I recently made the personal discovery of the Republic P-43 Lancer and the fact it had an actual combat history. And I thought I was reasonable well read on WWII history Looking at its performance, from Wiki sigh, I am surprised several thousands were not produced early in the war when America was dreadfully short on modern aircraft. It should have been comparable to the Hawker Hurricane and P-40 with better performance at high altitude. If it catches your interest it would be interesting to see what you could find in the records on this.

@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles So I did a little more research on my own. (WAIT! You can do your own research? Who knew.) Seems the obstacle was the Air Corp brass. They had the sensible view that the Lancer did not have a development path that would keep it from being obsolete against newer designs. Their error was ignoring how useful it would have been in the short term due to its performance at high elevation. If 1-2 thousand had been built in 1941-42 I think they would have had a good war record as long as they were pulled and replaced by late 1943. It was something they were building at the time and so need to be compared to the P-39 & P-40. Certainly it would have been easier to re-equip Lancer units with Thunderbolts than Thunderbolt units with Mustangs, as was done.

Way back in 1983 the French showed up with a Formula One car with a 1.5 liter engine, turbos, and water injection that made 800 horses. I see no reason why you can't get half of that with E85 and some careful boost management. Remember, you want to go full boost (3 bar or more) after the engines normal peak torque rpm, reduces stress on the engine.

Renault actually debuted their turbo F1 engine way back in '77 with the Renault RS01. By 1983, Brabham-BMW was making 1400bhp in qualifying trim running on 85% toluene. The FIA finally stepped in and squashed the high toluene fuel because the mechanics were wearing full respirators during refueling pitstops.

You may want to consider Hylomar PL 32M in place of the Fiat sealant for precision, metal to metal, surfaces. It is a British compound we use extensively in the aerospace industry and it performs well in a broad range of temperatures and maintains its elasticity and seal-ability. It is available fro; Marston Lubricants Ltd, Adhesives and Sealant Div, Hylo House, Cale Lane New Springs, Wigan, England You may find it is cheaper than the Fiat compound, and is more available.

Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles - I understand. I can send you a page from a maintenance manual where we use it, but I will not post it on here. Greg, your expertise is always impressive to me. I have been having trouble with my car. It's had an oil leak for a while, and more recently it seems like the engine is maybe half as powerful as it used to be (for example, the car loses speed on hills, can't accelerate). Can a bad oil leak cause this kind of thing? I've had some of the seals replaced recently but my mechanic didn't replace the harder to reach seals. I've also noticed that the oil is very dirty, even after adding fresh oil to it.

I don't want to reveal exact pistons specs just yet. Primarily because if it doesn't work out well, I don't want people to copy it. Once it's done full specs will be revealed, except for the specifics of the valve seat angles and head porting. Compression isn't being dropped too much. @GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles2 жыл бұрын
Upgraded coil packs are not required for a Phase 2 124. As a general rule as long as the car isn't having an ignition break up the coil packs are fine. If it is, then it makes sense to replace them with upgraded units. The 124's stock coil packs hold up pretty well. The 500 Abarths are marginal.

Why can’t they just grind the crank with modern tight tolerances in order to use same bearing chells all across the whole crank?
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles4 жыл бұрын
I have wondered that myself. However I understand that Honda is doing things the same way now. As I'm not really knowledgeable about mass production I can only guess, but here goes. I think that no matter how good, there are still variations. They keep the variations small, and then even smaller by breaking them up into three groups. Thus they can run more precise clearances this way. These Fiat engines seem to last forever so I think it works. That is not to say that the entire car lasts forever, but the engines, especially the bottom end hold up really really well.
@justacomment16574 жыл бұрын
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles AFAIK the main bearings on all half decent engines are different. And I guess its because the crank is not grinded. It is forged , heat treated and hardened. I guess the expanse to throw away a crank because it is 0.001mm off is way more than build a set of bearings to allow for such variation. Some manufacturers like vw might even accept higher tolerances on the low end engines... (aka burning oil is normal and such...) Nissan did those individual bearing sizes on all turbo engines including the SR20, fj20 and rb26 and its little sibling ca18... Those engines can put out quite some power and they will last (to a point..) It's nice to see that fiat knows how to build an engine. Is there any difference between Multiair and T-jet? Both 1.4 Fiat engines
@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles4 жыл бұрын
Yes, they are quite different. The multiair engine uses the multiair system (hence the name) to vary valve lift and timing through a huge range. It uses few moving parts, and those that do move are bathed in oil and don't really wear out. It's a brilliant system. The short blocks are the same but the entire difference is in the valve system. The T jet is the lower end motor, used in European Fiats. In Europe, in order to get the multiair version you had to buy an Alfa Romeo. However in the US market the Fiats got the upgraded engine. So, I guess everything I covered in this video applies to both engines since I never got into the valve train in this discussion.
