I'm using a cheap SCART to HDMI converter I found on Amazon, but the TV screen keeps showing "No Signal". Any idea what I did wrong and how to solve this issue ? Looking forward to hearing from you. I would say just don't. It's a rabbit hole. IMO there are 2 options: you either hook them up to a CRT, or golden age LCD/Plasma (2009-2010), flat TV's that came with every possible input and were using cutting edge tech like wide gamut Plasma phosphors or wide gamut CCFL backlights. These are like 20-30 bucks nowadays and offer a stellar picture, outperforming any LED TV. A CRT is even more purist, and not too expensive either, you can find a decent stereo set with RGB SCART for like 50 bucks. If you DO need to play retro games on a HDMI-only modern TV, first try to do it with an Android TV app, and if that does not work, get any random 25 bucks computer and install emulation software like Retroarch.

Watched it again, and the RF route via a VCR is utter bullocks. The demodulator is IN THE TV. Yes, even that modern OLED can tune RF pretty decent, way better than any VCR could, especially denoising has improved a lot. Just hook up that NES or 2600 using the exact same cable that worked in the seventies. Just leave out the splitter box as there is no analogue TV signal to tune nowadays. And you know what, the NES for example looks cleaner over RF than over composite.

I think you are best after a 2010-ish AV receiver, 50 bucks max, it will also fix the garbage audio of moder TVs in one go. It was standard back then to have many analog inputs and HDMI passthrough or even analog to 4K upscaling.

I find plasma the most attractive. Sure a CRT is nice, but those are tiny and heavy, and a plasma does have that glass-tube finish that makes the whole image slightly fuzzy. Also they have a way better input panel, with 2x SCART (RGB+Svideo), 2x composite, VGA, component, 4x HDMI, RF. On my CRT's only one SCART does RGB, and you can't hook up anything with higher definition.

actually modern LCD TV sets have RF analog and digital tuners so you can directly hook the console to this! Even >I have one SECAM Atari 2600 that works only on my modern TV! the picture quality and the sound are fantastic for the RF standards hehe :D I do not have an old CRT fully SECAM compatible especially for the French sound system "L", so all my CRT even those that are multi-region can not tune this Atari at all, the picture very bed barely visible, and the sound is only static. There you are a demonstration of this SECAM Atari 2600 on modern TV via RF directly: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2KrfZ2mg9Npjqs

That really amazes me that TV's still can tune analog RF. Is there a single country that still has analog RF broadcasts? But maybe the DVB-T2/ACTS decoder chips can do analog decoding as a side job, so they kept supporting it in the menu.

Intellivision (RGB), Coleco Vision (RGB), Atari 7800 (S-Video), Atari 2600 (S-Video) as well as Saba Videoplay (AV) offer the best video output on modern TV with an internal mod hooked to an external certified HDMI scaler. It's cheaper to buy a fully certified and restored console with certified HDMI scaler than doing it by your own. Btw. for SEGA and Nintendo Consoles are out of the box HDMI converters available. Dedicated for each console. So why wasting time to use RF and converters, wasting time to find out by yourself which is the best combination? It simply makes no sense. Modern TV have most likely only HDMI connectivity left.

Kidding mode: First of all, move to Europe. You need SCART if you are into retro gaming. The US is a mess anyway with politics, healtcare, pay your living etc. No kidding mode: Just don't try to use a modern TV! Get a GOLDEN AGE TV, which is any flat TV from around 2010. Preferably plasma, but a Bravia is great too. Those TV's have tons of inputs, pretty decent upscaling and denoising for composite/RF, cost like nothing (got a perfect 1080p plasma for 25€). Second best bet is a GOLDEN AGE AV receiver. Same era. They even do 4K upscaling to HDMI. Something like an Onkyo TX-NR809. So many inputs. That VCR solution feels really awkward. Oh, and the TG16, or PC Engine as I prefer, has RGB out natively. Don't mess with composite/component on the PC Engine. Just get the correct EXT-BUS->SCART converter. No modding needed. If I see people drill holes in a PC Engine.... my whole body shivers....
